03:00 AM Feb. 19, 1999 PT WASHINGTON A mysterious and fatal herpes virus is killing elephants at American zoos and could endanger all zoo elephants, researchers said on Thursday. Two slightly different versions of the virus a distant relative of chickenpox and cold sores in humans probably passed from African elephants to Asian elephants and vice versa. The virus kills young elephants, the researchers reported in the journal Science

"This is very troubling because they are an endangered species," said Gary Hayward, a virus expert at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore who worked on the study. If the infection is found quickly, it can be treated with antiviral drugs such as famciclovir, the researchers said. Zoos are working hard to preserve their elephant populations. Asian elephants, a separate species from African elephants, are especially rare. Zoos can no longer get new specimens from the wild and are forced to breed them itself a difficult and lengthy task.

http://pbl.cc.gatech.edu/mindy/310
Etiology of Bell's Palsy
ETIOLOGY OF BELL'S PALSY:
As sited by numerous journals and references, Bell's Palsy is a diagnosis resulting from the process of elimination of other Facial Palsy causes. Left and right side paralysis occurs equally. Its etiology remains unknown, although various studies have lead people to believe that it is a mononeuritis cranialis or neuritis vestibularis induced by either a viral infection or an autoimmune disease(Schrader and Sumner, 1996).
Acquisition of these recent infections and diseases are all considered to be associated factors to possible episodes of facial paralysis (Billue, 1997):
- Upper Respiratory infections
- Ear infections
- Epstein-Barr virus
- Cytomegalovirus
- Group G Streptococcus
- Mycoplasma
- Kawasaki Disease
- Chlamydia - HIV - Herpes Simplex Virus - Diabetes - Hypothyroidism - Hypertension - Cancer - Syphilis - Sarcoidosis - Multiple Sclerosis THE VIRAL ETIOLOGICAL HYPOTHESIS: ETIOLOGICAL THEORY OF THE HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS AND BELL'S PALSY: RISK FACTORS: The onset of Bell's Palsy creates maximal unilateral motor deficits occurring over a few hours. Pain behind the ear is a common symptom that generally precedes paralysis by one or two days, as well as fever, tinnitus, and a slight hearing deficit. Voluntary and involuntary movements of the muscles are affected, and often impaired. Obvious physical signs that the patient exhibits are facial asymmetry, drooling, a widened palpebral fissure, smooth forehead, and a flattened nasolabial fold causing a depressed cheek. Symptoms not associated with Bell's Palsy are facial twitching, otorrhea, severe otalgia, and balance dysfunction.

    October 15, 1997
Web posted at: 9:33 p.m. EDT (0133 GMT) BOSTON (CNN) Public health officials had hoped that, in the era of AIDS, the messages about safer sex would reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases. But a new study suggests that is not the case when it comes to genital herpes. In findings published in the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers from Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the incidence of herpes has increased 33 percent since the 1970s. Genital herpes infection rate on the rise One in every five Americans over the age of 12 now has the herpes virus, and the most dramatic increase has been among young white teens, the researchers said. "We have seen a marked increase in our adolescents between 12 and 20 it's gone five times higher and in our young people between 20 and 30," says Dr. Andrew Nahmias of Emory. "We're concerned." Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted viral disease that causes painful sores that subside and then usually disappear. However, because the disease sometimes does not produce any immediate symptoms, only 10 percent of infected people realize they harbor the virus, even though they are able to pass it to others.

    Herpes
Herpes simplex is a common and usually mild recurrent skin condition. It can cause "cold sores" or "fever blisters" on the mouth or facewhat is called oral herpes. It can also cause similar symptoms in the genital area, which is known as genital herpes.
A virus causes herpeseither herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) or herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2). As with all viruses, there is no cure for herpes. It is different from other common viral infections because once it is introduced it lives in the body over a lifetime, often without symptoms or with periodic symptoms. This is called "latency." The virus can travel the nerve pathways in a part of the body and hide away, sleeping, in the nerve roots for long periods of time. Even though HSV may not cause "cold sores" or genital signs or symptoms at the moment, it can still cause symptoms later. Find Questions and Answers about herpes here
