61. Shiva A Main God Of Indian Mythology...- HINDU MYTHOLOGY
SHIVA. CLICK HERE TO FIND YOUR SOULMATE! Shiva is the destroyer destroyer ofignorance, desire, ego, and death. Worldly matters do not interest Shiva.
http://www.indobride.com/stories/SHIVA.htm
SHIVA Shiva is the destroyer - destroyer of ignorance, desire, ego, and death. Worldly matters do not interest Shiva. Unaffected by the whims of the world, he is innocent and guileless, pure of mind and heart. He does not adorn his body with jewels or flowers; he mats his hair; wraps his body in animal hide and lets the serpent slither around his neck. He rejects social norms and does not mind the company of ghosts, gnomes , goblins, bhutas, pisachas and yakshas. He even rejects his body; hence he is worshipped as a linga. Sometimes he wanders into crematoriums, smears his body with ash and dances in the light of the funeral pyres, reminding all about the transitory nature of material things. Shiva prefers to isolate himself atop Mount Kailas, shutting his eye, restraining his senses, meditating and transcending samsara. In fact so intense is the power of his tapas that it transforms him into a pillar of fire that has neither an origin nor an end. But the gods seek his wisdom. They wanted him to participate in the worldly affairs. They wanted him to marry and produce mighty sons who would protect the world. So they enlisted the help of the mother-goddess Shakti. Manifesting as Parvati, the goddess succeeded, after great difficulty, in becoming Shiva's consort. Together they created two sons: the wise Ganesha and the mighty Kartikeya. Parvati inspired Shiva to compose music, choreograph dances and unravel the mysteries of the Tantra and the secrets of Yoga for the benefit of the universe. He even enlightened her on the art of lovemaking, delighting man and god alike.

HINDUISM
The underlying tenets of Hinduism cannot be easily defined. There is no unique philosophy that forms the basis of the faith of the majority of India's population. Hinduism is perhaps the only religious tradition that is so diversified in its theoretical premises and practical expressions as to be called a "museum of religions". This religion cannot be traced to a specific founder nor does it have a "holy book" as a basic scriptural guide. The Rig Veda, Upanishads and the Bhagwad Gita can all be described as the sacred text of the Hindus.
Unlike most other religions, Hinduism does not advocate the worship of one particular deity. One may worship Shiva or Vishnu or Rama or Krishna or some other gods and goddesses or one may believe in the 'Supreme Spirit' or the 'Indestructible Soul' within each individual and still be called a good Hindu. This gives an indication of the kind of contrasts this religion is marked by. At one end of the scale, it is an exploration of the 'Ultimate Reality'; at the other end there are cults that worship spirits, trees and animals.

http://members.tripod.com/~rajkumarparashari/eclipse/mythology.htm
Concept and Perceptions of Eclipses in Hindu Mythology THE vedas are considered to be the ultimate authority by the Hindus, much like the New Testament and the Quran by the Christians and Muslims, respectively. The Rigveda is generally believed to be the oldest of all the four Vedas. The Rishi Yaska applauds the Moon for its ability to reflect the sunlight as seen from the Earth ( Nirukta 2.6), a fact duly reiterated by the Rishi Gotama, son of Rishi Rahugana ( Rigveda 1.84.15). In those days, the Full Moon was referred to as Raka and the New Moon as Sinivali ( Sayana Bhasya , and Rigveda 2.33.8). The cause of the eclipses is ascribed to a demon, called Svarbhanu, striking the Sun with darkness. When the gods could not discern the Sun (hidden as it was by darkness), they invoked Rishi Atri who repelled its darkness by chanting four Rik mantras ( Rigveda 5.40.5-6) Before he could chant the four Riks, which must have taken at least 50 seconds, Atri must have had to be informed by his disciples or his sons about the sudden darkness that fell upon the Earth; in which case, the actual process must have lasted a few minutesthe typical duration of a total solar eclipse. In the ninth Rik of the same sukta , it is clearly mentioned that only the students and descendants of Atri knew how to dispel the sudden darkness which befell the Sun. It can perhaps be interpreted that only these people knew how to predict the duration of a total solar eclipse.

Hindu Mythology
Krishna H induism is the oldest religion that is still widely practiced. Though they have hundreds of gods and goddesses, Hindus will tell you they are all many aspects of the one god we all recognize. Ancient epics such as the Mahabharata and the Ramayana are known by even the illiterate, and merit is gained just by reciting them. As I traveled through India and Bali, I saw this living religion as part of everyday life.
