Florida's Winter Wonderland It's that time of year again to trade in slush and snow piles for snow-white beaches, tropical blue skies and warm breezes. Florida's weather forecast for the next three months puts the average temperature across the state at about 60 degrees - and even warmer in some areas like sultry Key West where 72 degrees is the average. Minimal chances of rain, and zero percent chance of snow, make the winter months some of the best for a Sunshine State sojourn. Come visit and spend the winter surfing the Atlantic, bicycling through forests, playing at theme parks or simply relaxing on the beach.

InfoTech > Web Watch Note: Clicking on a hyperlink below will launch a new browser window. PLAYBILL ON-LINE/THEATRE CENTRAL http://www.playbill.com/ Date Visited: Developer/Provider: Playbill Playbill On-Line (PBOL) adds a plethora of content news stories, listings, and discounts to the familiar publication distributed at theaters. At the magazine-like homepage, one column headlines major news stories, while the other promotes ticket and travel discounts available to members of the Playbill On-Line Club (membership is free; the discounts are most useful in New York City). A narrow bar at the left, which appears on every page, provides a helpful contents list for the entire site. Advertising is relatively unobtrusive. Among the content headings, News provides a searchable database of stories divided by category and accessible by keyword; the articles range from short press releases to reviews and feature articles. Listings provides useful data concerning productions ranging from New York to regional and international theater. Reference complements Listings with seating charts for the major theaters throughout the country. Features and Celebrities offer a grab-bag of substantive information, including transcripts of interviews conducted by PBOL with many theater stars, a database of biographical entries for theater people, weekly reports on Broadway grosses, and lengthy, annotated lists of musicals newly released on disc. The PBOL Mall provides a link to Telecharge for full-price tickets, plus a small database of restaurants and hotels limited to New York City. Industry, a searchable database of casting and jobs, has fewer listings than those at BackStage (see review below).

What do cooking, historical reenactments, family history, ethnic music, work, and natural environment have to do with each other? These topics were all included in the Calumet Region's Lyceum. Participants explored how work, creativity and environment weave together to form a rich and diverse regional identity. While the lyceum included components of a traditional history conference, it featured master classes, panel discussions,a motor coach tour, and evening performances.
Master classes
The lyceum kicked off on Friday, September 29, 2000 with five master classes: traditional food, music, crafts, natural history, and genealogy. One could survey, cook, and taste Greek cooking from appetizers to desserts, learn the ins and outs of Bar-B-Que cooking Gary-style, or practice the Polish traditional arts of paper cutting and egg decorating.

Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park The site of a major battle during the Civil War, Carnifex Ferry Battlefield preserves an integral part of the historic heritage of West Virginia. The Patteson House, which was situated between Union and Confederate lines during the skirmish, has been restored as an interpretive museum containing Civil War relics from the area, and a film about the battle is offered. Hiking trails to scenic overlooks, picnicking, game courts and a playground are also featured at this historical site. An annual battle reenactment is held in the fall. For information call: (304)872-0825 [Return to top] Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park On November 6, 1863, the largest Civil War engagement of West Virginia's history occurred on this high, mountain plateau overlooking the beautiful and vast Greenbrier Valley. Standing among the tall trees, it is not difficult to imagine the fierce battle that took place here over a century ago. Part of the battlefield is restored and marked for visitors, and a small museum contains Civil War artifacts. Recreational opportunities include hiking trails to scenic overlooks, an observation tower, picnicking and a playground. A battle reenactment is featured every other year. Annual Events
This is only a partial listing of events. Some others that come to mind are Santa Rosa Junior College's Day under the Oaks. This is an event that features the college and their different departments. Food and crafts are also available. The weekly Thursday night market is held from early June to early September. The market is open from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Most of Santa Rosa's main street (4th street) is closed down and farmers sell their fresh produce. This is a smaller version of San Luis Obispo's year round Farmers Market.
There is also a car mart held every Saturday at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. The Junior College sometimes has swap meets in front of Baily Field on the JC campus. The Junior College also puts on the Summer Repertory Theatre (SRT - coincidentally is the same acronym as Sonora's Repertory Theatre). These dramatic musical productions are given from June through August.
The Santa Rosa Symphony is a professional orchestra playing at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. Well known artists regularly perform with the Symphony, artists such as the famous cellist Yo Yo Ma. Concerts are given from October through May.
