for students. If your class is unable to visit the museum, schedule the new From Launching to Legend Program to visit your classroom. Self-Guided Tours
Group visits require at least 1 hour and are self-guided so that the members can experience the museum at their own pace. Visitors can view two different video productions that alternate in the Figgie Theater. They will learn about 200 years of "Old Ironside's" history through a collection of over 3,000 original artifacts and artwork, including ship's logs, journals, weapons, commemorative pieces and paintings. Visitors easily imagine life aboard USS Constitution through hands-on activities in the museum's galleries - they can take the wheel, fire a cannon, swing in a sailor's hammock. A video battle allows the visitor to maneuver USS Constitution to out sail and fight a British enemy ship.

    The Secret Diary
A little about the history and practice of journaling.
    Contents
    Introduction
I try to write in my journal every day. Some days I am more successful in this quest than others. While there are whole weeks that go by without my writing a story or even a letter, very rarely does that much time go by without my scribbling something in my journal. When speaking of someone who keeps a journal, I usually use the term journaler , although sometimes I use diarist . I think the word "journalist" should be reserved for the profession.
    My history of journal writing
About 10 years ago I took up journal writing seriously. I went to Berlin for overseas study and decided to keep a diary of my experiences there. I have kept a journal ever since. I don't look back at what I've written, because much of it's painful or embarrassing or silly, but I'm glad I've written about those times. In fact, a while back I noticed I had a tendency not to write during times of great emotional pain for me, and I got annoyed because those are the times I need to write the most! Nowadays I make a special effort to write during these times. Part of the reason to keep a journal is so that you get those horrible, evil parts of yourself out of your system (where they're just going to fester anyhow)...and you don't end up burdening anyone else with them either. You can say it and be done with it.

In today's fast-paced environment, we have placed a premium on efficient time management meetings, schedules, dates, being on time, taking time, giving time, setting a clock's time, and on and on. To that end, we have developed incredibly accurate clocks to help us turn time into an extremely useful tool." GPS World, November 1998

history of standard time in the US.Category Reference time...... For very readable accounts of the history of standard time in the US, see MichaelO'Malley keeping Watch, A history of American time (Viking, 1990).
    http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/us_tzones.html
U.S. Naval Observatory Astronomical Applications Department
What Are the U.S. Time Zones?
Standard time in the U.S. and its territories is observed within eight time zones. Standard time within each time zone is an integral number of hours offset from a time scale called Universal Time, Coordinated (abbreviated UTC), maintained by a large number of very precise "atomic clocks" at laboratories around the world, including the U.S. Naval Observatory. To obtain U.S. civil time from UTC, use the following table.
To obtain Atlantic Daylight Time subtract 3 hours from UTC Atlantic Standard Time subtract 4 hours from UTC Eastern Daylight Time subtract 4 hours from UTC Eastern Standard Time subtract 5 hours from UTC Central Daylight Time subtract 5 hours from UTC Central Standard Time subtract 6 hours from UTC Mountain Daylight Time subtract 6 hours from UTC Mountain Standard Time subtract 7 hours from UTC Pacific Daylight Time subtract 7 hours from UTC Pacific Standard Time subtract 8 hours from UTC Alaska Daylight Time subtract 8 hours from UTC Alaska Standard Time subtract 9 hours from UTC Hawaii-Aleutian Daylight Time subtract 9 hours from UTC Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time subtract 10 hours from UTC Samoa Standard Time subtract 11 hours from UTC
Thus, 11:00 UTC is the same as 5:00 CST. When converting zone time to or from UTC, dates must be properly taken into account. For example, 10 March at 02:00 UTC is the same as 9 March at 21:00 EST. The table can also be used to determine the difference between the time observed in any two zones. For example, the table shows that Eastern Standard Time is three hours "ahead" of Pacific Standard Time.

to: T he dominant conceptual scheme for civil time-keeping at present is the Gregorian Calendar: a 400-year-old modification of a 2000-year-old scheme known as the Julian Calendar. First instituted on Papal authority, the Gregorian Calendar's primary purpose was to restore a continuity of time-keeping with an Early Christian era some twelve centuries prior. Time-keeping and scheduling in our present, post-industrial, information-age society thus rely on an anachronistic scheme serving the interests of men in a pre-scientific, theocratic society, with a feudal economy. The invention of mechanical clocks made it possible to divide every day into twenty-four equal time-segments. The day is therefore easily divisible into halves, thirds and quarters, as is each of its twenty-four hours. The practical advantage of these regular divisions over the variable divisons of daylight, from dawn to noon to sunset, is obvious.

Keeping Track of Film Loans and Searches
Whenever I go to the Family History Center now, I take along my notebook of pink slips. I can then tell which film I've ordered, what I've already searched the film for, and what I'm searching for now. This saves me a lot of time from double researching, and it also saves money (since the Family History Center charges for the loan of a film from Salt Lake City).
Hope this helps others who are drowning in pink slips.

    90. Astronomical Time Keeping
Extensive descriptions of many astronomical time keeping systems, with information on time zones and Julian day numbers.
    http://www.maa.mhn.de/Scholar/times.html
    Astronomical Time Keeping
Introduction: Time keeping and construction of calendars are among the oldest branches of astronomy. Up until very recently, no earth-bound method of time keeping could match the accuracy of time determinations derived from observations of the sun and the planets. All the time units that appear natural to man are caused by astronomical phenomena: The year by Earth's orbit around the Sun and the resulting run of the seasons, the month by the Moon's movement around the Earth and the change of the Moon phases, the day by Earth's rotation and the succession of brightness and darkness.
If high precision is required, however, the definition of time units appears to be problematic. Firstly, ambiguities arise for instance in the exact definition of a rotation or revolution. Secondly, some of the basic astronomical processes turn out to be uneven and irregular. A problem known for thousands of years is the non-commensurability of year, month, and day. Neither can the year be precisely expressed as an integer number of months or days, nor does a month contain an integer number of days. To solves these problems, a multitude of time scales and calenders were devised of which the most important will be described below. Siderial Time The siderial time is deduced from the revolution of the Earth with respect to the distant stars and can therefore be determined from nightly observations of the starry sky. A siderial day can be defined in a first approximation as the time interval between two successive passages of the same star through the meridian. Here, the meridian of an observational site is the great circle passing through the two celestial poles and the zenith of the site. Expressed in different words, the meridian is the projection of the circle of the site's geographical longitude onto the celestial sphere if projected from the Earth's centre. The passage through the meridian is thus a more accurate determination of the point in time when in colloquial speech ``the star is due south'' (at least for observers on the northern hemisphere). The duration of a siderial day in units of Universal Time is 23h 56m 04.0905s.

    KEEPING THE FAITH
    Sister Kathleen Crowley
Ordinary Time: Cycles in Marriage, Faith and Renewal
    Nancy Mairs
    Beacon Press
The ability to share one's life of faith with candor and insight is a risk undertaken by few. For such sharing can easily be interpreted wrongly and received with less respect than is its due. Yet, with piercing honesty and penetrating wisdom, Nancy Mairs has done this, placing her life and her belief before her readers in a series of personal essays which form her autobiography of faith, Ordinary Time . In this spiritual diary, she exhibits a depth of understanding of her newly-owned Catholic faith. At the beginning of her book, Mairs makes clear the urgency she feels to know why and how she has spent most of her conscious life "in an uneasy and unrelenting state of religious faith." The author relates her growing response to a "Something Else", the presence of God Herself. Mairs examines the immanence of "God working out Godself in everything." The title of her book identifies that time in the liturgical life of the Church which is outside the seasons of feast and fast outside of Advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter. Ordinary Time becomes for Mairs the time of religious presence, of God's close proximity to her in the people and events of her life. The transcendent God of mystery seems far from her experiences of God who is involved in every moment of her life. Mairs struggles with her "uneasy faith" in being, at one and the same time, Catholic and feminist something she laughingly refers to as an oxymoron. Yet, throughout her book, she attempts to weave together these two realities. Sometimes she accomplishes this with insight and integrity. At other times, she wrestles with the uncomfortable fit of both in her life. At this intersection of Catholicism and feminism, Mairs exhibits most visibly her ability to live with ambiguity and uncertainty. For she chooses to remain within this Church which she loves and wishes to change.

When we were growing up, we didn't have all of the high-tech games of today. We didn't have memory cards... we didn't have video game systems with built in DVD players or dishwashers. Nope. We just had the basic games. What's really funny is, as basic as these games were, they provided all of us with countless hours of entertainment. Whenever we happen to hear about one of these games or see them our reaction is always something like, "Oh man! I remember that game! I used to play it all the time! I was the king of that game!"
