NBA Scouting Goes High Tech With Infinite Mobility's Pocket Hoops and Microsoft's Pocket PCs LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17, 2000 All winter long, college basketball arenas around the country are filled with screaming fans. But up in the bleachers, a few spectators burrow in with notebook and pencil, and get to work. They're not concerned with the score; they're looking at the stars. These are professional scouts, and their job is to find not just the next superstar, but any player good enough to make a professional basketball roster. At next June's draft, as professional teams select the players they think are the top new prospects, each player's fate will hinge on the scouts' observations and research. Logic deems that the teams that do the best scouting will get better players, and eventually win more games. Each player represents a multimillion-dollar investment to the team, and yet the job of scouting new talent for the NBA until now has been a fairly conventional operation. The scout writes out an evaluation form for each player in longhand, and then sends it back to the team office. The scout records impressions of a player's performance on a cassette recorder, and then someone has to decipher or transcribe the scout's notes - a time-consuming and sometimes impossible task. "It leaves a lot of room for error," said Rebecca Thompson product manager of Microsoft's Mobile Devices Division.

After failing to win Olympic gold as a player in 1998, Wayne Gretzky is the mastermind behind Team Canada's chances this time around. Great task for Gretzky
Sept. 4, 2001
CALGARY ? Wayne Gretzky is all business. The greatest player who ever laced up a pair of skates is facing what could be the greatest challenge of his hockey career, and that's putting together the team to win Canada's first Olympic gold medal since 1952. As executive director of Team Canada, Gretzky knows the weight of a hockey-mad nation is on his shoulders. Gretzky knows better than anyone that the only color that counts in Canada is gold silver and bronze might as well be tin and he understands as well as anyone that any of the so-called six top hockey powers can mine gold in Salt Lake City in February. One of the lasting memories from the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, is of Gretzky sitting alone on the bench after the Czech Republic beat Canada in the quarter-finals in a shootout. Gretzky knew his one chance to win Olympic gold as a player was over and now he's been asked to assemble a gold-medal winning team.

Session Title: International Farmers - Friday Super-Panel Session Time: Friday, January 31: 2:00pm-4:00pm
Biography:
Francis has considerable international experience, designing Farm Development Projects in Saudi Arabia and Libya. His most recent global endeavour is the management of a 4,000-acre farm in Romania. Imagine if you will for a moment that you are part of a traveling softball league. Your second place team has traveled to the division leader's field for a crucial doubleheader. When providing your lineup card to the umpire, he informs you that your team must pay a surcharge in addition to the league fees you already pay. He then clarifies that you should not worry because the "fee will not be kept by the league but distributed to the competing team". How would you respond? Sound far-fetched, maybe not as much as you think. Many hockey fans were cautiously excited over this past off-season. Whether it was speeding up face-offs, cracking down on obstruction, or quick referee feedback, the NHL gave hockey fans many things to look forward too. The province of Alberta is helping the NHL take another step backward when it seemed it was finally starting to move forward. In a misguided attempt to aid the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers, the province of Alberta decided last spring to impose a surtax on NHL players. Visiting players will be taxed on a game-by-game basis. The money collected will be distributed to the financially strapped Flames and Oilers. In effect, competing teams such as the Canucks and Senators will be subsidizing their Canadian Brethren.

It’s time that the NHL acknowledged Jarome Iginla as the player most valuable to his team’s success. (posted Apr. 10, 5:29PM EDT) Jarome Iginla continues to be the story for the Calgary Flames. The forward gained some confidence during the Canadian Olympic team orientation camp and continued to grow from there, getting better as the year progressed. He is going to win the Art Ross Trophy and the Rocket Richard Trophy, the only question is whether he is going to win the Hart. The only other players who should be given equal consideration for the NHL’s most valuable player award is the Montreal Canadiens’ Jose Theodore and the Colorado Avalanche’s Patrick Roy.
