H.323 This is an ITU-T standard for transferring multimedia videoconferencing data over packet-switched networks, such as TCP/IP. There is a LAN standard for high-quality video, and an Internet standard for lower-bandwidth video over lines as slow as 28.8Kbits.
Hacker This is someone that seeks to understand computer, phone or other systems strictly for the satisfaction of having that knowledge. Hackers wonder how things work, and have an incredible curiosity. Hackers will sometimes do questionable legal things, such as breaking into systems, but they generally will not cause harm once they break in. Contrast a hacker to the term cracker.

Half Duplex Originally a modem communications term, half duplex now mainly refers to network communications that transmit in one direction at a time. Also see duplex and full duplex.
Hard Disk This is commonly the slang term for a hard drive. It refers to the type of re-writeable media that is inflexible, as opposed to a floppy disk. The hard drive contains multiple hard disk platters.
Hard Drive A device that physically stores data in your computer. Much like a floppy disk, but the system is closed and the disks are hard (usually metal, although some glass versions have been developed). The closed system gives the possibility of more precision, so the drive is much faster and can hold much more data.

Mass Storage by Stephen Cass Random Access Memory and registers are all very well, but it is impossible to store large amounts of data for long periods of time without going to a mass storage device. From the early days of punched cards to tomorrow's holographic memories, we never seem to be able to have storage that‰s big enough or fast enough for all our needs. Hard storage
Until the development of the hard disk now as ubiquitous a component as the CPU itself in most computers mass storage relied on accident prone serial media such as paper tapes or punched cards. Early hard disks checked in at 10 to 20 MB. Now 10 to 20 GB is not uncommon on desktop computers. Today IDE and Enhanced IDE is the dominant hard disk technology. The FAQ created by John Wehman and Peter den Haan gives an excellent introduction to this and related technologies. Keywords: mass storage, hard disk

How holographic storage works By Clive Akass
The data to be stored is split into 'pages' consisting of an array of 0s and 1s. Each page is passed to a spatial light modulator (SLM) that translates it into an array of 1.3 million pixels that pass or block light according to bit value. A prism splits light from a coherent laser source into two beams, called the reference and signal beams. The signal beam passes through the SLM and emerges patterned with the data.

DVD (Digital Versatile Disk) Data Storage Flash Memory Cards Floppy discs, CD-ROMs, DVDs it seems that every time a better way to store your data comes along, you just get more data to fill up all the extra space. And now that people are increasingly looking for places to keep their digital music downloads and maybe soon their digital movies it's not hard to imagine that even the mighty DVD will one day join the floppy on the scrap heap of storage devices. While current data storage technology continues to advance, optical storage solutions (like DVDs) and their magnetic storage counterparts (like computer hard drives) share the same limitation. They both try to cram as much information as possible onto a two-dimensional space. Hard drives encode data on a magnetic disc, and DVDs store it in pits and dashes that a laser can read from one or two layers of plastic. Since the laser is reflected off the surface of the DVD, it is not feasible to make a DVD with more than two layers (four, if it's double-sided). But there is another approach. As Hans Coufal, head of the holographic data storage project at IBM's Almaden Research Center, points out in his German accent: It is only natural that we explore the third dimension.

Lucent looks at holographic storage By: Lucy Sherriff Posted: 31/01/2001 at 17:25 GMT
Lucent has sent up a new venture, called InPhase, to investigate the potential of holographic storage, long the stuff of science fiction novels, and storage vendors' dreams.
In theory, three-dimensional storage would allow high storage densities and fast data transfer speeds. It would work by storing data as a series of interference fringes in a 3D matrix, which could then be read back with a laser. The pattern would be interpreted as binary data.
The move has the backing of three venture capital firms: Signal Lake; Madison Dearborn Partners; and Newton Technology Partners. The amount invested has not been disclosed. Lucent expects to spin the new venture off into a new company within four years.
Lucent blames the slow development of the technology on funding and materials issues, as well as the unexpected speeds and capacities now being realised in magnetic storage.
