Teacher Education The preparation of teachers and the provision of knowledge and skills for teachers are important functions of the university at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels. The coordination of the teacher education program is a responsibility of the Dean of the College of Education. General advice on specific degree requirements is available in the office of the academic dean of the college in which the student is enrolled. The student will be advised on certification requirements by an appropriate advisor in the College of Education. Selection of courses in the student's teaching field or area of specialization is determined by an advisor in the academic department involved. Due to changes in state laws, teacher education at Texas Tech has undergone many revisions. Majors using the term "education" (e.g. elementary education, art education, home economics education) are no longer offered at Texas Tech University. Individuals will still be certified to teach in elementary and secondary schools, but they must complete an academic major. Students preparing to teach in secondary schools will generally complete an academic major in Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Arts and Sciences, or Human Sciences, with additional courses in professional education required for certification. Students interested in teaching composite science (certified to teach all sciences in grades 8-12) may complete a Multidisciplinary Science major through the College of Education or an academic major in one of the teaching fields. Students preparing to teach grades 4-8 will complete a Multidisciplinary Studies major in the College of Education. Students seeking early childhood certification do so through a degree in the College of Human Sciences. Students wishing to teach young children, pre-kindergarten through grade 4, should enroll in the early childhood program.

She was unable to find after-school care for her own children when they attended elementary school in Twain Harte, one of the rural mountain county's small communities. Feldman's personal experience prompted her to develop a groundbreaking 4-H after-school program in Tuolumne County that has provided thousands of students with enriching, educational and supervised afternoons for the past 20 years. The fee-for-service "4-H PM Clubs" have been successfully replicated in rural and urban counties nationwide. Counting the program as just one of the many accomplishments of her distinguished career, Feldman will retire May 1, 2002. "I knew we had a great program for kids in traditional 4-H clubs," Feldman said. "However, there were many kids who were at home unsupervised just watching TV and eating.

REMEMBERING
January 26, 1999
Remembering two American originals: a look at the lives of 'Sadie' Delany the first African American woman permitted to teach home economics in white New York City schools and Robert Shaw the renowned choral conductor and long-time head of the Atlanta Symphony. JIM LEHRER: Finally tonight, remembering two American originals, and to Phil Ponce. SARAH DELANEY: (1994) When I got appointed, you had three years to get appointed after you passed this examination, which was no easy job for a colored person. And they wrote me. They took the three top on the list. And of course, if you were colored, they'd just skip over you, and take the other two. And so, my brother knew a fellow that worked down at the Board of Education, and he told Hubert - ELIZABETH DELANEY: Who was colored. SARAH DELANEY: Yes, he said, "You tell your sister, when they write for her to come for an interview at the school," he says, "don't go." He said, "They won't know she's colored, and then they'll appoint her, and then when you go up there and you're appointed, you can't do nothing about it." So I made an excuse, and I didn't go. And they just appointed me. And when I appeared there, this colored girl, they could do nothing about it, because I was appointed. CHARLAYNE HUNTER-GAULT: When you look back, what do you think has been harder, being black or being a woman?

Home Economics is a field of study, having as its focus the wellbeing of people in their everyday living in the household and family.
The profession has a long history where job titles may change but the intent remains solid in its mission . In NSW a home economist could be the person who tests the recipes for that latest recipe book that you purchased or a hospitality teacher in secondary schools.
Let's look more closely at home economists in three major areas of work.
Everyday Life Competencies
World Home Economics Day on March, 21st 2003
“Home Economics for everyday life competencies” is the theme of the upcoming World Home Economics Day on March 21st 2003. On this day the focus of public attention shall be the importance of Home Economics competencies for the daily life of every single person as well as the society in general. Home Economics education is essential for families and households in order to deal with the challenges and requirements of a rapidly changing world but still it is often neglected. Major issues of Home Economics are for example resource management, consumer behaviour, environmental issues, health and nutrition as well as education and culture.
The World Home Economics Day was initiated in 1979 by the International Federation for Home Economics, IFHE in order to promote the aims and purposes of Home Economics. Numerous conferences and events worldwide take place to celebrate this special day dedicated to a field that is so essential for all our lives.

Fair Play: What Your Child Can Teach You About Economics, Values, and the Meaning of Life by Steven E. Landsburg Hardcover, 224 pages Published by Free Press ISBN: 0684827557 "Should be required reading for every high school senior, politician and newspaper editor.... The quality of your own thinking, and your ability to detect faulty logic, will be honed by Landsburg's entertaining discourse."
The Washington Post Book World "Another collection of brash, intelligent essays on economics by the author of The Armchair Economist (1993).... Often funny and at times poetic, these essays are eminently readable and always smart."
Kirkus Reviews From the Book Jacket:
With his witty and instructive book The Armchair Economist , Steven Landsburg won popularity and acclaim by using economics to illuminate the mysteries of daily life, and using daily life to illuminate the mysteries of economics. Now Landsburg returns to address fundamental issues like fairness, tolerance, morality and justice-issues that are as important on the playground as they are in the marketplace. With the help of his daughter Cayley, he contrasts the wisdom of parents with the wisdom of economists-not always to the credit of the latter. How should we feel about taxes that redistribute income? Ask how parents feel about children who forcibly "redistribute" other children's toys. How should we respond to those who complain that their neighbors are too wealthy? Ask how parents respond when children complain that their siblings got too much cake. By insisting that fairness can't mean one thing for children and another for adults, Landsburg shows that the instincts of the parent have profound consequences for economic justice.
