Honduras Activities Grades 6 - 9: Nuestro Pais: Our Country (P) Materials: Reading "Nuestro Pais: Our Country" which follows these suggestions Background Information: This overview of the geography of Honduras is from the third grade social studies textbook Nuestro Pais which is used by Honduran students in both public and private schools. (Because of their cost and because all students must buy their own materials, textbooks are not usually available in rural schools.) Activity Ideas: Have students silently read the overview in Nuestro Pais: Our Country looking for the most important point about Honduras's geography. Compare responses, asking students to give evidence for their choices. As students read the rest of the selection, ask them to look for the influence of the mountains on climate, vegetation, and lifestyle. Alternatively, divide students into groups of four and have each student in the group read and summarize a different section of Nuestro Pais. Share the summaries within the groups, again noting the influence of Honduras's mountains on its climate, vegetation, and lifestyles. Use a physical map of the United States or the world to locate states and/or countries with physical features similar to those of Honduras. Would the climate and lifestyle (food, clothing, leisure activities, livelihoods, etc.) of those areas be the same as that of Honduras? Why or why not? Have students locate and research the lifestyles of people living in various mountain regions around the world. Create a class bulletin board of students' findings; have students generalize about the characteristics these regions share.

The total area is 112 090 sq. km, 111 890 sq. km of land and 200 sq. km of water. The capital of Honduras is Tegucigalpa, which has a population of 995,000 people. In the north part of the country is San Pedro Sula which is the industrial city and which has about 500,000 people. The total population of Honduras is 5,751,384. 42% of the population is less than 15 years old, and 3% is more than 65 years old. Most of the people in Honduras live in the country about 66% of the total. In the country side, most of the people are farmers and handcrafters, families are large and don't have access to most of the commodities that people enjoy in the urban areas Honduras' climate is subtropical in the lowlands and temperate in the mountains. The terrain is mostly mountains in the interior with narrow coastal plains. The highest point in Honduras is Cerro Las Minas 2,870m high and the lowest point is the Caribbean Sea m. Honduras' natural resources are timber, gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, ore, antimony, coal and fish. 15% of the land is arable, 3% of the land is permanent crops, 14% is permanent pastures, 54% is forests and woodlands and 14% is other(1993 est.) Natural hazards are earthquakes, hurricanes and floods along the Caribbean coast. Current environmental issues are deforestation, land degradation, soil erosion, increased urban population and pollution in the countryÕs largest source of freshwater.
