A brief History of the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
When the postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology was first started in Hong Kong, it was modelled after the British system. There was no local professional body to award postgraduate professional degrees. The trainees in obstetrics and gynaecology had to undergo the training as stipulated by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), pass the Membership Examination organised by the RCOG to become Members of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG). To help the RCOG in monitoring the training in Hong Kong, a representative committee was established in Hong Kong consisting of members elected among the local members of the RCOG.
In November, 1985, the Hong Kong Representative Committee of RCOG felt that in view of the Sino-British Agreement, it was time to consider the possibility of establishing a local body for the recognition and supervision of postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynaecology in Hong Kong. A Working Party on Future Postgraduate Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Hong Kong was established by the Representative Committee for this purpose. Professor Ho-Kei Ma was elected as the chairman of the Working Party.

History of Hong Kong Time Service

The Hong Kong Observatory is an official timekeeper in Hong Kong. The provision of an accurate time service, particularly to mariners, was one of the original duties of the Observatory since its establishment in 1883. Local time was determined by astronomical observations at the Observatory using a 6-inch Lee Equatorial and a 3-inch Transit Circle. The time signals were indicated to as many people as possible by dropping a 6-feet diameter time ball from a mast in front of the Marine Police Station at Tsim Sha Tsui. Each day about 12:50 p.m., the barrack sergeant of the Marine Police in conjunction with the Observatory, raised the ball to the top of the mast and dropped it at exactly 1p.m. The time ball was first dropped on 1 January 1885. The time ball tower was later moved to Blackhead Point in January 1908. In 1904

Martial Arts: A Little Background The use of Chinese martial arts for military strategy and as a subject for scholarship dates back at least as far as the Zhuzi Baijia (the various schools of thought from pre-Qin to early Han Dynasty), and is recorded in military texts of the Warring States period. Traditional Chinese theories of natural science and religion, along with legends, customs, and pictographic symbols, have been incorporated into Chinese martial arts, extending their range beyond mere military or self-defense purposes into a form of knowledge.

50th Anniversary History What is Rugby Board of Directors ... Womens Competition Rules HISTORY Rugby has been played in Hong Kong as long as horses have been racing in Happy Valley. Early newspapers in Hong Kong's Central Public Records Office print accounts of rugby games played during the late 1870's and 80's. Before World War I, Jock McGregor was secretary of the Hong Kong Rugby Club and the game was played mainly by army and navy men, together with the police and merchant cadets from the large Trading Houses. From 1920 until 1949, Hong Kong teams regularly took part in 'Interport' competitions with Shanghai, with many great games being played between the two port cities. After World War II manpower in Hong Kong increased and local competition flourished. In 1951 the Hong Kong team played in Japan, captained by the late Gerry Forsgate, former President of the Union. This was the start of many tournaments and games, both home and away throughout Asia and in 1952 the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) was formed. During this period, the strength of club rugby was with the Football Club side, Police and occasionally Service teams. In 1967 Hong Kong became a founder member of the Asian Rugby Union and has since played a key role in developing the game of rugby in Asia.

Hong Kong Travel Guide - History
Hong Kong has become one of the busiest cultural and business centres in the whole of East Asia. Lying just south of the Tropic of Cancer and with a total area of some 1100 square km and 733 km of coastline the island and its neighbouring mainland China has an interesting past. Prior to the arrival of the British, Hong Kong was a small fishing community and a haven for travellers and pirates in the South China Sea. During the Opium Wars with China in the Nineteenth Century, Britain used the territory as a naval base. Following the end of the first Opium War the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 ceded Hong Kong to Britain.. Sir Henry Pottinger, whose has a street in the Central district named after him, was its first governor. Following additional conflicts with the Chinese in 1860 Britain added Kowloon and Stonecutters Island to its list of controllable land originally belonging to China. In 1898 Britain acquired the New Territories which included 235 offshore islands on a 99-year lease. Settlement in the territory grew slowly with the population rose from 32,983 in 1851 to 878,947 in 1931. In the early part of the 20

History
World Guiding Origin The Boy Scout Movement was officially founded in 1908. In 1909, a Boy Scout rally was held at Crystal Palace in London, and Baden-Powell was taken aback when a number of girls attended, proclaiming themselves to be girl Scouts. Baden-Powell invited his sister, Agnes, as the girls' leader and chose the name Girl Guides after the famous corps of guides in India who were "distinguished for their general handiness & resourcefulness under difficulties, and their keenness & courage". Baden-Powell felt that the Movement for girls should be run by women, so in 1910 he asked his elderly sister Agnes to undertake the work of adapting his book of Scouting for Boys, for use with girls. That year the Guide Movement was formally founded, with the establishment of the Girl Guides Association. In 1910, Baden-Powell, now Sir Robert Baden-Powell, retired from his army career and devoted himself to Scouting and to the beginning of Guiding. He attended camps, rallies and jamborees all over the world, and it was during a world tour in 1912 that he met Olave Soames, his future wife. After a brief courtship, the couple were engaged and married that same year.

European trade with China had been taking place since the 16th century, but as European demand for tea and silk grew, the balance of trade became more and more unfavourable to Europeans, who were expected to pay in silver. In 1773, the British unloaded 70,000 kg of Bengal opium, and the Chinese taste for the `foreign mud' grew exponentially. Alarmed at the drain of silver from the country and the increasing number of addicts, the emperor banned the drug trade.

History of Hong kong After Japan seized Manchuria in 1932, the Sino-Japanese war broke out in 1937. Throughout the late thirties, as Japan advanced into China, hundreds of thousands of Chinese took refuge in Hong Kong. It was estimated that some 100,000 refugees entered in 1937, 500,000 in 1938 and 150,000 in 1939 - bringing Hong Kong's population at the outbreak of World War II to an estimated 1.6 million. It was thought that at the height of the influx, about 500,000 people were sleeping in the streets. World War II again disrupted the social and economic life of Hong Kong. On Christmas Day, 1941, the British army surrendered Hong Kong to the Japanese. U.S. submarines foiled Japanese plans to use Hong Kong as a staging area for assaults further into East Asia. Following Japan's surrender on August 14, 1945 Britain reclaimed the territory. After the Japanese surrender, Chinese civilians returned at the rate of almost 100,000 a month. The population, which by August 1945 had been reduced to about 600,000, rose by the end of 1947 to an estimated 1.8 million. Then, in the period 1948-49, as the forces of the Chinese Nationalist Government began to face defeat in civil war at the hands of the communists, Hong Kong received an influx unparalleled in its history. Hundreds of thousands of people - mainly from Guangdong province, Shanghai and other commercial centres - entered the territory during 1949 and the spring of 1950, the population had swelled to an estimated 2.2 million. Since then, it has continued to rise and now totals six million.

History of the Hong Kong Sevens
Adapted from the Original "Seven Specials" By Emil Signes In Hong Kong in 1976, as at Melrose 93 years earlier, 7s were chosen for logistical reasons: it was a lot easier to bring in twelve 7s' teams than twelve 15s' teams. The inspiration behind the Hong Kong Sevens came from Ian Gow and Tokkie Smith; it was Gow's idea to bring in teams from rugby nations throughout the world for a tournament in Hong Kong; Smith's suggestion that, logistically, sevens would be a far more workable solution than 15s. Furthermore, the scope of the proposal was, to begin with, narrowed to Asian and Pacific nations, in contrast to the global approach originally proposed by Gow. It was just about this time that the commercial world was beginning to take an interest in rugby, and the Hong Kong organizers were certainly fortunate that, from the first, the tournament found committed corporate sponsors, in this case Cathay Pacific Airlines and Rothmans' Tobacco, the latter eventually replaced by the Hongkong Bank. Right from the start, all the Asian rugby playing nations were willing and eager to send national teams to Hong Kong: the 10 that participated were Fiji, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Tonga, and Malaysia.

Brief History of Credit Union Movement in Hong Kong The credit union movement spread to Asia in 1938 and was first started in Philippines. After the World War II, it began to spread to other Asian countries. It was until the beginning of the 1960's that Hong Kong people learned of this movement. The Founder and Permanent Adviser of Credit Union League of Hong Kong, Rev. Father John Collins, learned of the credit union movement through the seminar organised by the Socio Economic Life in Asia. With the assistance provided by the Asia Foundation of the Socio Economic Life in Asia, he visited Philippines, Australia and Fiji Islands to study the credit union philosophy. After his return to Hong Kong, he drafted a complete proposal to start promoting credit union movement in Hong Kong. He discussed with the Hong Kong Government to formulate the appropriate credit union ordinance. He also requested the financial assistance from the Asia Foundation to promote credit union movement in Hong Kong. In 1964, Father Collins finally established the first credit union in Hong Kong, the St. Francis Credit Union. The Chronicle of Credit Union Movement in Hong Kong St. Francis Credit Union, the first credit union in Hong Kong, was formed.
