    History
The Peak Tram, Hong Kong's famous funicular railway began operation in May 1888 and has served Hong Kong successfully for well over a century.
Originally, The Peak Tram was operated by coal fired steam boilers. This was replaced by an electrically powered system in 1926. A 62 seat, lightweight all-metal tramcar was introduced in 1956. Finally in 1989, the present tramcars commenced service carrying 120 passengers over 90 times per day from 7:00 am to midnight.
Passengers pass four intermediate stations between the two terminals - Barker Road, May Road, MacDonnell Road, and Kennedy Road. Barker Road is named after Lieutenant General G. D. Barker, the commander of the British Forces in Hong Kong (1890 - 1895). The others are named after former Governors of Hong Kong, Francis Henry May (1912 - 1919), Richard Graves MacDonnell (1866 - 1872) and Arthur Edward Kennedy (1872 - 1877). During its first year of service, The Peak Tram carried over 150,000 passengers. Over the years this number has increased considerably and today its patronage rose to over 3.5 million, an average of over 9,500 per day. The Peak Tram is much more than a vital transport link, a landmark and must for tourists. Since its inaugeration in 1988, it has helped to shape the face of Hong Kong's development.

History of Table - International and Hong Kong Chapter
    The History of Round Table.
In 1926, Louis Marchesi, a young man from Norwich in England felt that a need existed for an organisation for young men who’s principle aim was to offer help to the community and to develop the acquaintance of others. This would be similar to The Rotary Club, which has its roots in the professional world and industry but to which membership is often restricted by numbers and positions available. Others in Marchesi’s town were of a like mind and the first Table was formed on March 27th 1927. So popular was the idea that other Tables followed and, eventually, the National Association of Round Tables of Great Britain and Ireland was formed. Although it is not recorded why the badge of the legendary King Arthur was chosen to be our motif, one can only assume it was because of the name association with the Round Table of the Knights. It is fitting, though, that we too treat each other as equals with nobody having the right to sit at the ‘top of the table’ and rely on a co-operative spirit and freedom of speech to conduct our business, operating on a consensus - just as legend portrays King Arthur. Our motto of “Adopt-Adapt-Improve” does have a more definitive origin. It comes from a speech made by the Duke of Windsor in 1927 when, as Prince of Wales, he open the British Industries Fair by saying “The young business and professional men of this country must get together round the table, adopt methods that have proved so sound in the past adapt them to the changing needs of the times and whenever possible improve them”.

It was an era of colonial expansionism and the missionary zeal to spread Christianity was running high. Yet six years were to elapse before the foundation stone could be laid for a church for the Colony of Victoria, Hong Kong. The Cathedral Church of St. John the Evangelist is a testament to the dedication and determination of the early residents and its leaders who had begun to raise funds for a church even before they left Macau to settle in Hong Kong.

    History and Formation of the
    Hong Kong Paediatric Society
T he Hong Kong Paediatric Society ( HKPS ) was formed on 1st February 1962. The objectives of the Society as set out in the Constitution, are "to advance the knowledge of Paediatrics, to help maintain the standard of paediatric practice in Hong Kong and to promote child health." The late Dr. Li Tsoo Yiu was elected the first president. The Society emblem of a mother tending her child was designed by Dr. Li who extracted it from an ancient Chinese seal. The Chinese characters were written by Dr. Li himself. Subsequently, the Society adopted the white emblem on a red background as its official colours. The Society was never meant to be an academic or regulatory body. The function of the Society is "to organize scientific and social meetings in order to encourage interchange of ideas and to stimulate cooperation in the various fields of Paediatrics". Another important function that has evolved in the past few years is "to promote child health through public education and to participate actively in all topics of current interest regarding child health" Basically the Society consists of two categories of membership, i.e. ordinary and associate membership. Ordinary members are fully registered medical practitioners while associate members are other professionals related to child care in Hong Kong. Since March 1994, a new category "groups of person with interests in Paediatrics" may be admitted as affiliate members.

Hong Kong Hong Kong's dynamism is unforgettable. From the vantage point of Victoria Peak, overlooking the world's busiest deepwater port, you can see a city geared not only to making money but feeling good about it. At night, it's like looking down into a volcano. Despite its British colonial past, Hong Kong has always stuck to its roots and the culture beneath the glitz is pure Chinese. That didn't stop locals from feeling apprehensive about being re-united with the motherland when the British handed the colony back to China in 1997, but their unease has largely evaporated. Visitors often find it takes a few days in Hong Kong to get accustomed to the whirlwind pace. If you need some respite, check out the Outlying Islands for a change of tempo and scene.

    91. Hong Kong Monikers
A collection of uncommon English names (such as Adonis and Superman ) adopted by Hongkongers.
    http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Ginza/3175/
Hong Kong was a British Colony for nearly 150 years. During that time, British influence led many Hong Kong Chinese to adopt an English name. Newly converted Christians would choose an English name as a sign of faith, such as Peter or Mary. At English medium schools in Hong Kong, a child was often assigned an English name by a teacher, or chose one from a favorite book. Ordinary names such as Jane, Susan, Anne, Michael, David, and William were popular. However, in recent years there has been a tendency to break away from boring, traditional names. The alternatives Hong Kong people invent made me want to create this page to celebrate the creative, vibrant spirit of Hong Kong. (O.K., they gave me a really good laugh, too) I've collected these names from personal observations, newspapers and magazines, business cards, and email registries, so to my knowledge they are names people actually use. When reading these pages, remember that the majority of these names are self-inflicted.
Young people choose less common English names such as "Horace" or "Ophelia" They choose strange or even weird names such as "Johnivans" or "Katusha" Some choose to name themselves after a famous person or place , such as "Cher" or "Princeton" Others choose an interesting noun , like "Apple" or "Rainbow" Yet others go for adjectives , such as "Piggy" or "Super" Some people are very vain and choose names like "Adonis" or "Unique" Others dismiss English names altogether and choose a dashing foreign name like "Alfonso" or "Gigi"

    June 4, 1997
Web posted at: 1:03 p.m. EDT (1703 GMT) In this story: From Hong Kong Bureau Chief Mike Chinoy HONG KONG (CNN) With Beijing set to take control at the end of the month, Hong Kong held its annual and perhaps last candlelit memorial for Chinese pro-democracy protesters killed in the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Tens of thousands of people participated on Wednesday night in a ritual that could end with China's July 1 takeover. The rally at Victoria Park was the last under British rule to commemorate the June 3-4, 1989, crackdown on demonstrators at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. A L S O Tiananmen anniversary quiet in Beijing

New at this year's rally was a three-story-high sculpture featuring twisted human bodies. The "Pillar of Shame," sculpted by a Danish artist, was unveiled on Tuesday. However, Hong Kong officials refuse to allow the sculpture to be displayed in city parks during the handover celebrations.
