http://glossary.gardenweb.com/glossary/
T he GardenWeb Glossary of Botanical Terms currently contains 4400 terms relating to botany, gardening, horticulture and landscape architecture and is regularly updated. The form below allows you to search the glossary for one or more keywords.
New Search:
[see notes] Or Whole Words Notes:
  • This is version: February 4, 2002.
  • If you are looking up names of plants, check the Horti Plex plant database here at GardenWeb.
  • Proper nouns are generally not included in the glossary.
  • Searches are case insensitive.
  • You can browse the glossary, but there are many pages.
  • Multiple keywords can be searched so that each word must appear in each hit (boolean "and") or so that only one of the words must appear (boolean "or").
  • To increase the chances of matching keywords with multiple endings, search for "Word Roots." With this setting, epiphyt will match both epiphyte and epiphytic.
  • You can also limit your search to just terms or just definition.
  • Additional Passes: If there are no hits in the first search, common word endings (-ing, -es, -ed, -ly) are stripped from the keywords and a second pass is made. If there is still no match, all non-word characters are stripped.
  • This glossary was compiled by the editors of GardenWeb from a variety of sources.

27. Botany/scirpus
Very brief descriptions of selected species, and information on growing and propagating Scirpus plants.
http://www.botany.com/scirpus.html
SCIRPUS (Scir'pus) DESCRIPTION: Scirpus, also known as Bulrush and Club Grass, is a group of decorative hardy and frost-tender Sedges. S. lacustris var. tabernaemontani 'Zebrinus', Zebra Rush, is a hardy kind that forms tufts of almost leafless stems banded horizontally with white. The tiny, reddish-brown flowers are produced in spikelets, in the summer. This plant grows up to 5 feet high. S. cyperinus, Woolgrass Bulrush, grows 3 to 5 feet high and produces an umbel of spikelets atop slender stems. The spikelets turn woolly when in fruit. S. cernuus is a tender kind found wild in the tropics. This plant has thin, drooping stems bearing small, light green, grass-like flower heads at their tips. This plant needs a minimum temperature of 45 degrees. POTTING: These plants grow well by the water. Grow them in 5-gallon containers filled with rich to clay soil and set in water that is up to 5 inches over the crown, in sun or partial shade. The tender kinds should be brought indoors for the winter and grown in pots filled with equal parts of loam and leaf mold. PROPAGATION: They can be divided in the spring and summer. Stratified seeds may also be sown.

What is an Aroid?
Aroid is the common name for members of the Araceae family of plants, sometimes known as the Philodendron or Arum family. The sometimes beautiful and sometimes bizarre combination of spathe and spadix known as the inflorescence, and sometimes referred to as a "flower", is a distinguishing feature of all aroids.
The Genus of Arisaema. A Monograph for Botanists and Nature Lovers
by Guy and Liliane Gusman
The book covers all frost-resistant species, whose exotic look makes them great woodland garden plants, and tropical species suited for the cool greenhouse. It provides descriptions of all species, keys for their identifications, plus information on their growing conditions in the wild and advices for their cultivation and propagation.
This book is the long-awaited result of ten years of interest in the genus Arisaema. The authors traveled widely in connection with this work, which is the product of observations in the wild, in-depth reviews of scientific papers, analysis of many herbarium vouchers, and, finally, the experience they acquired in growing these plants in a Belgium garden.

Activities and Disciplines
Economic Botany
Internships
Internships lasting three to six months are available in the Centre for Economic Botany (CEB). We are currently involved in a wide range of research topics relating to useful plants, focusing on the United Kingdom and on the world's tropical arid and semi-arid regions. An internship here offers the opportunity to gain experience in aspects of economic botany and ethnobotany relating to collections, taxonomy and information retrieval and dissemination. Internships do not involve fieldwork or, in CEB, work with living plants. Interns will also become familiar with the range of work carried out in a large botanic garden and the resources available. Summer 2002: interns from France, Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom Internships fall into three parts:
  • Some time, particularly in the first month, assisting with a range of routine tasks in the CEB, often aimed at making its collections better available to users or answering enquiries from outside Kew. These activities often involve databasing and online searching, and training is given in using many of the new information sources available.
  • Carrying out one or more small research or curation projects. Usually we have a particular project in mind; sometimes a project develops from the specific interests of the intern. The first month of an internship offers the opportunity to explore Kew's resources, and to develop a topic in consultation with Kew staff. Projects will always need to fit with the Centre's research and curation priorities, but these offer broad scope. Publication in printed or online form is strongly encouraged.

Library Overview

Collections

These two libraries are in the process of being integrated into one combined collection, which will be housed in the West Wing of the Natural History Museum in the expanded space of the Botany Library. The move is scheduled for early in 2003. Until that time, limited service will still be available. Access will be by appointment through the Botany and Horticulture Librarian for all except the Horticulture Division Staff, whom will continue to use the library in their accustomed manner. Some library technicians will be available on site on a part-time basis. The Botany Library is one of 20 branch libraries in the Smithsonian Institution Libraries system. It was established in the winter of 1965-1966 when the Botany Department moved into the newly-built West Wing of the Natural History Museum and several collections of botanical literature were consolidated into a separate library. It provides research support for the Botany Department and the large number of botanists world-wide who use the collections and resources of the Botany Department. The Horticulture Branch Library was also one of the libraries in the Smithsonian Institution Libraries. It was established in 1984 as a research support resource for the Horticulture Services Division, which is responsible for the management of the gardens, grounds, greenhouses, and interior plantscaping at the Smithsonian Institution.
