Building upon my formal education in horticulture over the past 10 years, I've expanded my expertise in botanical and environmental topics to include historical, design and healing aspects of gardens in addition to the more practical subjects of agricultural production and plant physiology. I draw upon this background, as well as my indexing and proofreading expertise in a variety of subject areas and production environments, to produce the most useful and appropriate index within the constraints of each project.

Reminiscent of the Italian Villa style (1830-1880), the Botany/Horticulture Building is one of the oldest facilities still in use on the campus. Built in 1901, the wooden structure with a red brick veneer was known to early State students as the Plant Breeding or Botany Building. The characteristic tall tower topped with a cupola corners a two-story building crowned with a hip roof, boxed cornice, and a decorated frieze. Segmented relieving arches accent the windows and doors. The Botany/Horticulture Building was the setting for many of Professor Niels E. Hansen's important experiments during his 1895-1950 tenure at SDSU. A stone memorial west of the building recognizes the achievements of the world famous horticulturist known as the "Burbank of the Plains." Historical Walking Tour Home Acknowledgements Campus Tour

    A career in landscape
Virtual reality is one of the newest technologies used by landscape architects. This view along the Quayside towards the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle is part of a video developed by Insite Environments to help people view a proposed development. The video won the LANDCADD Sponsor's award in the 1995 LI Awards. Landscape architects, managers and scientists create landscapes to make the area we live in a pleasant place. They may design public parks, reservoirs, the surroundings of public buildings or private gardens. What they design must fit in with the environment. Landscape architects have degrees or the equivalent. Technicians need at least good GCSEs. Landscape Architects
Landscape architects can work on settings for all sorts of buildings, roads, parks and play areas, and other construction projects such as housing developments. The aim is to do the least possible damage to the scenery and ecology of the area. Landscape specialists often work on projects such as preserving the coastline, rescuing sites which have been left derelict and restoring disused pits and quarries. Landscape architects don't just work in the countryside - they are also concerned with making our towns and cities more pleasant to live in.
Whatever the particular project, there are similar things to be done. Landscape architects hold discussions with their clients to find out what the job is all about. They make visits to the site to carry out surveys, and then draw up plans and designs (see pictures, left and right). These have to be agreed with the client. There is a good deal of paperwork to do. The detailed plans have to include projected costs for the project, including cover for maintenance work after the project is completed!

"The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) is a database of the names and associated basic bibliographical details of all seed plants. Its goal is to eliminate the need for repeated reference to primary sources for basic bibliographic information about plant names. The data are freely available and are gradually being standardized and checked." Integrated Taxonomic Information System

This system is designed to determine the relative risk of extinction, and the main purpose of the IUCN Red List is to catalogue and highlight those taxa that are facing a higher risk of global extinction (i.e. those listed as Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable)." Records include classification, assessment information, geographic distribution, summary documentation, detailed documentation and data sources. Advanced searching allows for limiting by region, country, marine region, or biome. Southwest Michigan Horticultural Experiment Station
Established to meet the diverse needs of agricultural producers in the southwestern part of the state, the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center (SWMREC) combines research projects and educational programs on fruits, vegetables, field crops and woody ornamentals, as well as environmental quality issues. Offering solutions to the region=s agricultural problems and keeping area producers and processors competitive are some of the centers primary objectives. SWMREC is located just outside Benton Harbor in Berrien County. The center encompasses 350 acres, a conference center and a visitor information center.
