Henry Hudson was an English explorer that traveled farther north than any previous explorer in an attempt to find a river that would take him north between Europe and Asia. My class is studying explorers, and I picked Henry Hudson because I didn't know much about him and I wanted to learn more. Historians know very little about Henry Hudson's personal life. They do know that he was born in 1564, that he died in south east Canada in 1611, and he had a son named John. Henry Hudson discovered a bay that is now the most used waterway! I think Henry Hudson is a very important man. Bibliography Encyclopedia (print and electronic) "Hudson, Henry" World Book Encyclopedia 1993 ed. "Hudson, Henry" Explorers Encyclopedia 1993 ed. HUDSON, HENRY, English navigator and explorer. Nothing -w~irds the end of iôoS Hudson ‘‘ had a call “to Amsterdam, 22nd of June 1611. Robert Bylot was elected master and brought the ship back to England. During the voyage home Greene and several others were killed in a fight with the Eskimo, while others again died of starvation, and the feeble remnant which reached England in September were thrown into prison. No more tidings were ever received of the deserted men. Although it is certain that the four great geographical landmarks which to-day serve to keep Hudson’s memory alive, namely the Hudson Bay, Strait, Territory and River, had repeatedly been visited and even drawn on maps and charts before he set out on his voyages, yet he deserves to take a very high rank among northern navigators for the mere extent of his discoveries and the success with which he pushed them beyond the limits of his predecessors. The rich fisheries of Spitzbergen and the fur industry of the Hudson Bay Territory were the immediate fruit of his labours. See Henry Hudson, the Navigator (Hakluyt Society, 1860); and

Introduction:
Who was Henry Hudson Anyway? And What Happened to Him?
Imagine stumbling onto the beauty of the Hudson Valley by accident! Englishman Henry Hudson was looking for a quick passage to China as he sailed along America's north Atlantic coast in 1609. Hudson thought he found what he was looking for when he entered New York Bay and what is now the river named for him. He and his crew of 18-20 men, sailing on a ship called the Half Moon, traveled about 150 miles up the river near what is now Albany before realizing it would not lead them to their destination of choice. What he did first find was the Hudson River of modern day New York.
The Task: You and your team of learners have been appointed by the Queen and King to accompany Mr. Hudson on his journey. Your task will be to gather information about your adventure. You will need to report back to a committee to determine if this voyage was a success. Be prepared to tell about Henry Hudson, his ship, navigation, what places you visited with Mr. Hudson, what you accomplished, and any hardships. In addition, you will travel, in time, to the present day. You will need to tell how Henry Hudson is remembered. In addition, we all know that a river was named after him. What is that river like today?

Named in honor of Henry Hudson, the explorer whose ship, the Half Moon, anchored near this site in 1609, this bridge opened in 1936. It connects northern Manhattan to the Bronx and was built as part of the Henry Hudson Parkway by the Henry Hudson Parkway Authority. When it opened, it was the longest plate girder arch and fixed arch bridge in the world. Originally built with only one level, the bridge's design allowed for the construction of a second level if traffic demands increased. Within a year and a half the lower level was opened. The upper level carries northbound traffic; the lower one is for southbound traffic. After a series of mergers, the Henry Hudson Parkway Authority became part of the Triborough Bridge Authority in 1941. Today the Henry Hudson Bridge remains one of Bridges an Tunnels' facilities, but the parkway is under the jurisdiction of New York City and New York State. The bridge's neighbors to the north are the residential communities of Spuyten Duyvil and Riverdale, where single family homes, wooded estates, and large apartment complexes share breathtaking views from the sloping shoreline of the Hudson River and the Harlem Ship Canal. The Manhattan end of the bridge is in Inwood Hill Park, Manhattan's last remaining natural woodland, which is bordered by the residential community of Inwood.

Henry Hudson (?-1611), was an English explorer and sea captain. He made four voyages in an attempt to discover a northern route between Europe and Asia. Hudson never found such a sea passage, but he sailed farther north than any previous explorer. He explored three North American waterways later named for himthe Hudson River, Hudson Bay, and Hudson Strait.
Northern voyages
Historians know nothing about Hudson's life except for the period of 1607 to 1611, when he made his four voyages. In 1607, the Muscovy Company, an English trading firm, hired Hudson to find a northern sea route to Asia. European merchants and geographers believed that a ship could reach the Orient by sailing north, northeast, or northwest. They thought such a route would be shorter than any other. The Arctic had not been explored, and people did not know that ice blocked the area around the North Pole.
Hudson set out from England in a ship called the Hopewell with his young son, John, and a crew of 10 men. He sailed northeast along the coast of Greenland and reached Spitsbergen. These islands lie only about 700 miles (1,100 kilometers) from the North Pole, and no explorer had sailed so far north before. Huge ice floes forced Hudson to return to England. He told of seeing many whales in the northern waters, and his report led to English and Dutch whaling near Spitsbergen. In 1608, Hudson again tried to find a northern route, but ice again blocked the Hopewell.

Henry Hudson: Lost Leadership
Don C. Barnett Introduction Use the story of Arctic explorer Henry Hudson to illustrate the importance of leadership. First , locate the river, strait, and bay explored by Hudson's expeditions. Second , brainstorm ideas about the qualities of effective leadership. These should include qualities of fairness, communication, and listening to the wishes of others. Now let's look at the story of Henry Hudson. Hudson is the river that is the life-line of the densely populated industrial American north-east and delta of the largest city in the U.S.A. Hudson is the strait between Frobisher Bay and northern Quebec, as well as the name of the biggest bay in Canada. All are named after Henry Hudson, the Arctic explorer who died in the icy waters of the North. Hudson's dogmatic leadership style combined with the rough and unscrupulous men working on sailing ships in the 1600's was a mix of dynamite and gasoline, waiting only for a spark to ignite an explosion. The seeds of trouble were laid before Henry Hudson left England in 1610 on the ship The Discovery . Hudson's first mate, Robert Juet, had travelled and quarrelled with Hudson on previous voyages. Hudson made a fatal error in having Juet in his crew.

HENRY HUDSON'S DARING EXPLOITS
Henry Hudson (? - c. 1611)
We know neither Henry Hudson's birthdate nor his birthplace, but we do know that the navigator was already well travelled when he decided to pursue those explorations already undertaken by Martin Frobisher John Davis , George Waymouth (1602) and John Knight (1606) to the bay that would later bear his name. First he tried to find the famous Northwest Passage to Asia between Greenland and the Spitzbergen Archipelago. Then, hired by the Netherlands, he explored the Hudson River to the rapids at present-day Albany. Hudson returned to the service of England when the founders of the East India and Northwest Passage companies, wealthy traders much interested in exploration, asked him to explore Davis Strait further. Hendrick (Henry) Hudson
In April 1610, Henry Hudson embarked on the Discovery with 21 crewmen, including the future pilot, Robert Bylot. Hudson was a determined man but lacked judgement in his choice of sailors. Shortly after leaving, and throughout the voyage, he was mired in conflicts between members of his crew. With constant concerns about how to calm his men, he reached Hudson Strait in June. His mandate was to explore the area west of Davis Strait. The reports by Davis and others, based on the tides and the ice at the mouth of Hudson Strait led him to believe that there was a passage there. After a zig-zag voyage through the ice floes of the strait, he entered the bay that bears his name today. This was a very important step in the explorations of North America as, even by the standards of the great navigators of the 19th century, this would have been a very dangerous and impressive passage.

Introduction Although the Vikings traveled to North America more than 900 years ago, it was Christopher Columbus' good luck in 1492 that whipped Europe into a frenzy. Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, the Spanish Monarchs whom funded Columbus' exploration, were the first to realize the potential wealth of the New World. Spain became the richest and most powerful nation in the world. "How long will it last? ........No one knows. More importantly, will other European Countries allow Spain to reign supreme?
