"No" to the Western Pharisees Who Impose Reason on Reality Robert Trundle
Northern Kentucky University Although Camus was called the “conscience of his age”, no writer has continued to be both more vilified and exalted in the West. His writings are not only a devastating critique of Western philosophy, but Camus’ cultural horizons are infused with heartfelt insights of Eastern wisdom. Western culture is vulnerable to dilemmas of existence because it seeks to make abstract certain absolutes: The West has failed to come to grips with our finite existential condition. Indian thought distinguishes social, political, scientific and philosophical views of Reality from Reality itself. And this distinction evokes a hope, humility and spirituality that promotes a courage to live with truths not faced by the West.

Beyond Illusion and Despair Eyal Naveh
Tel Aviv University Foreword by Professor Richard Polenberg, Cornell University, author of The Era of Franklin D. Roosevelt 1933-194 ; and Fighting Faiths: Abrams Case, the Supreme Court and Free Speech Reinhold Niebuhr, a Christian theologian, minister, and teacher of Christian ethics, had an enormous impact on public figures, statesmen, intellectuals, students, journalists, and many other lay persons from the mid-forties throughout the fifties. In 1948 he appeared on the cover of Time magazine. Niebuhr made theology into something quite new by translating its concepts into the language of the philosophy of culture and social criticism, and charging them with a prophetic spirit. His arguments and ideas "broke into the world", thereby generating and engaging in a significant discourse relevant to the major historical events of the mid-twentieth century. Niebuhr's force manifested itself in crisis situations. He was able to face crisis by criticizing the illusions of liberalism, enlightenment and progress, and by attacking the utopian tendencies of American culture. At the same time he fought against tendencies of despair and nihilism, which might result when conventional beliefs turned into illusion, and utopian blueprints turned into catastrophes.

http://www.corliss-lamont.org/philos8.htm
Corliss Lamont was a prolific writer. In his lifetime he authored, co-authored, and edited 22 books, wrote 29 pamphlets in what was known as the "Basic Pamphlets" series, and had literally hundreds of "Letters to the Editor" published in newspapers throughout the United States. A sample of these letters can be found today, preserved for posterity, on The New York Times on the Web His most famous, and by far most popular work, was a full-length book originally titled Humanism as a Philosophy , first published in 1949, and since translated into several languages. Over the years he revised the book six times, the last edition coming out in 1990, when he was 88 years of age. The book is considered to be the standard text on the subject of Humanism. The New York Times called it "Both readable and persuasive." The following is taken from the 'Foreword to the Eighth Edition', by Beth K. Lamont: It is appropriate for a philosophy that breaks the shackles of oppressive orthodoxy to be written in a language that is brave enough to shrug off these same shackles. In light of this liberation, feminists and many Humanists have pointed out the need for an eighth edition of

'The need for critical thinking skills and a humanistic outlook in our world is great. This is no less true in the Black community than in others. Many African Americans have been engulfed by religious irrationality, conned by self-serving "faith healers", and swayed by dogmatic revisionist historians. Many others, however, have escaped the oppression of such delusions, and live happy and upstanding lives free of superstition. African Americans for Humanism (AAH) exists to bring these secular humanists together, to provide a forum for communication, and to facilitate coordinated action. In an irrational world, those who stand for reason must stand together'. This site provides information on the goals and activities of AAH, and is maintained by David Noelle (admin@SecularHumanism.org). Alliance of Secular Humanist Societies

What is humanism? Humanism is a philosophy of life inspired by humanity and guided by reason. Humanists think that science and reason provide the best basis for understanding the world around us. Humanists believe that moral values are properly founded on human empathy and scientific understanding. Humanists see no convincing evidence for gods, the supernatural, or life after death. Humanists believe we must live this life on the basis that it is the only life we'll have that, therefore, we must make the most of it for ourselves, each other, and our world. Humanist philosophies have arisen separately in many different cultures over many thousands of years. Today, this non-religious approach to life is shared by a significant portion of society. Whether or not they use the term humanism , tens of millions of Americans and hundreds of millions of people around the world agree with the humanist philosophy of living a happy and productive life based on reason and compassion. The core values of humanist philosophy are reflected in the following official statement adopted in July 2002 by the 50th Congress of the International Humanist and Ethical Union Amsterdam Declaration Humanism is the outcome of a long tradition of free thought that has inspired many of the world's great thinkers and creative artists and gave rise to science itself.
