September 24, 1995
Introduction
Thank you very much for inviting me to speak to you this morning about the history and philosophy of Humanism and its role in Unitarian Universalism. I am very happy to be here.
Definition of Humanism
What is Humanism? For many reasons, this is not an easy question to answer, but I will attempt to answer it in a number of steps. The word "humanism" has a number of distinct meanings, all legitimate, so let's briefly discuss them all and narrow in on my type of humanism. First, humanism means the study of the humanitiesliterature, history, philosophy, and so forth. Professors and students of history, philosophy, and literature are humanists, and are perfectly legitimately so described. A second definition of humanism is the European Renaissance revival of interest and critical inquiry in Western classical literature, which as you know, was pervasively secular and oriented to human, rather than theological, concerns, unlike that other great literary source of Western thought, the Bible. Individual scholars of such classical letters, such as Thomas More of England and Erasmus of Holland, were orthodox believers in an age of encompassing Christianity, but they are widely and correctly described as humanists, because they translated and commented upon the great literature of Aristotle, Plato, and other ancient classical, pagan writers.

BJP PHILOSOPHY : Integral Humanism
By Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya
Integral Humanism, the guiding philosophy of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was first presented by Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya in the form of four lectures delivered in Bombay on April 22-25, 1965.

P andit Deendayal Upadhyaya was born on Sept. 12,1916, in a village in Rajasthan. He passed his Matriculation standing first class, first in the Ajmer Board Examinations, winning two gold medals. He again won two gold medals in Intermediate examination securing first rank. He did his B.A. in mathematics in first class. Panditji joined the RSS in 1937 as one of the first few Swayamsevaks and rose to be its Joint Provincial Pracharak. He joined the Jana Sangh in 1952 and was appointed its General Secretary, which post he retained till he became the President of the Party in 1967. After the death of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookherji he shouldered the responsibility of building up the party and he achieved a remarkable success in this onerous task. Pandit Upadhyaya edited PANCHJANYA (Weekly) and SWADESH (Daily) from Lucknow. He has also written a drama CHANDRAGUPTA MAURYA in Hindi, and later wrote a Hindi biography of SHANKARACHARYA. He translated Marathi biography of Dr. Hedgewar, the founder of RSS.

Chapter 3 Chapter 4
Y esterday we had seen that even after 17 years of independence, we have still to decide what direction we should adopt to realize our cherished dream of all round development in the lives of our countrymen. Normally people are not prepared to seriously consider this question. They think only of the problems which they face from time to time. Sometimes economic problems are viewed with concern and an attempt is made to resolve them, and at other times social or political problems come to the forefront claiming attention. Not knowing fundamentally the direction in which we to go al these efforts are not accompanied by sufficient enthusiasm not do they give a feeling of satisfaction to the people engaged in these efforts. These efforts produce only a fraction of the results which they ought to have produced. Modern versus Ancient T hose who advocates some define direction, include two distinct groups of people. There are some who suggest that we must go back to the position when we lost our independence and proceed from there. On the other hand there are people who would like to discard all that has originated here in Bharat and are not ready to think about it. They seem to think that western life and thoughts are the last word in progress and all of it should be imported here if we are to develop. Both these lines of thought are incorrect, thought they do represent partials truths and it will not be proper to discard them altogether.

Humanism / Human Nature
Online Resources Texts: Humanism Texts: Human Nature Used Books: Humanism ... On Human Nature by Edward O. Wilson In a superb synthesis of the biological and social sciences, Wilson attempts to explain the core principles of our shared humanity as the accumulated result of evolutionary processes over millions of years. His account is remarkable in that it includes comparisons and examples from a diverse range of life-forms, human cultures, and branches of human knowledge. Wilson's empathy with his subject is compelling; his fundamental understanding of socio-biological principles, and sometimes deeply intuitive application of them to other fields is always thought-provoking if not entirely convincing. by Corliss Lamont Humanism Defined Humanism believes in a naturalistic metaphysics or attitude toward the universe that considers all forms of the supernatural as myth; and that regards Nature as the totality of being and as a constantly changing system of matter and energy which exists independently of any mind or consciousness. Humanism, drawing especially upon the laws and facts of science, believes that homo sapiens is an evolutionary product of this great Nature of which we are a part; that our minds are indivisibly conjoined with the functioning of our brain; and that as an inseparable unity of body and personality, we can have no conscious survival after death. Humanism, having its ultimate faith in mankind, believes that human beings possess the power or potentiality of solving their own problems, through reliance primarily upon reason and scientific method applied with courage and vision. Humanism believes, in opposition to all theories of universal predestination, determinism, or fatalism, that human beings, while conditioned by the past, possess genuine freedom of creative choice and action, and are, within certain objective limits, the masters of their own destiny.

That was the theme of my Ph.D. thesis. I started working on it from 1997 and completed within stipulated time for submission to the university. I consulted Dr. C.T.K.Chari at Madras Christian college, Dr.Ravada Satyanarayana in Physics department in Osmania University, Dr.Sripada Gopalakrishna Murthy who returned from London with Ph.D. in physics. A.B.Shah provided with the original manusciprt of M.N.Roy about the same theme. Roy wrote it in his jail days 1933-36. That script is really inspiring material to me.. My guide Dr. V.Madhusudan Reddi was devotee of Aurobindo, a retired godman at Pondicherry, India. My guide played double role with me. He approved the thesis in writing and refused in viva voce. Strictures were passed against him by inquiry commission, High Court. He resigned for his post and left to Pondicherry for some time.My thesis was scrutinised by three examiner committees and it took 13 years to settle the affair! In my thesis I dealth with the problem of Determinism , Space-Time, Second law of Thermodynamics, and modern biological progress. New Quantum theory and Theory of Relativity was taken into consideration for arriving at certain conclusions.

Research Agenda Project 3: Religion and Humanism Fundamental questions such as "What is religion?" and "What is the purpose of religion?" are discussed from a humanistic viewpoint. Work on this project has been published in IOP's Collection of Theses Vol. 1, 1999, as Shukyo to hymanizumu (Religion and Humanism). This project also inquires into the relationship between the philosophy of Mahayana Buddhism and the "theory" of human rights. Its chief concern is "How does the concept of Buddha nature, dependent origination and karma contribute to the modern idea of human rights?" To clarify this, the relation between Buddhist scriptures and Buddhist commentators, as well as early Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism, are also examined. Results of the study have been presented in IOP's English journal The Journal of Oriental Studies Vol. 9, 1999, titled "Buddhism and Human Rights: Points of Convergence" by Toru Shiotsu (The Japanese version was first printed in IOP's Japanese journal Toyo gakujutsu kenkyu Vol. 37, 1998)

humanism the humanist tradition ethical briefings ... the humanist tradition ancient philosophy Ancient philosophy Humanist ideas have probably been around as long as humans. Certainly some of the ancient Indian, Chinese, Greek and Roman philosophers were expressing humanist ideas as long as 2,500 years ago, when they suggested that humankind alone is responsible for human welfare and that morality arises out of the need to live together harmoniously. Many people have thought and expressed humanist ideas over many centuries all over the world, contributing to a humanist tradition. Though some of them may have believed in a god or gods, they were thoughtful, humane, open-minded people, and many of them fought against the ignorance and religious bigotry of their day, sometimes taking considerable personal risks to do so. Many of the great philosophers, scientists and moral thinkers were essentially humanist, because they did not accept traditional beliefs but thought for themselves and pushed human knowledge forwards. China
Confucius, the Chinese philosopher who lived 500 BCE, was a great moral teacher who tried to replace old religious observances with moral values as the basis for social and political order. When he was asked if he could sum up "the true way" in a single word, he replied, "'Reciprocity' is such a word." Confucius was not technically a humanist, but like humanists today he did not see "the true way" as following religious codes, but as based on reason and humanity, stressing the importance of benevolence, respect for others, and looking pragmatically at individual situations rather than blindly following traditional rules. Confucianism had many interpreters and followers - it was the state religion of China until the upheavals of the twentieth century.

Maurizio Viroli In his book From Politics to Reason of State (1992), Maurizio Viroli traces how the concept of politics between the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth centuries underwent a major transformation. From having enjoyed the status of "the noblest human science," politics now came to be regarded as "an ignoble, depraved and sordid activity." (1992, 1). Viroli argues for a revival of the tradition of ancient republicanism and its notion of politics as the art of good government. In the first excerpt, Viroli describes Renaissance civic humanism as a an important turning point in the history of political thought.
