Since the summer of 1982, Barátság Hungarian Dance and Music Camp has been treating its participants to a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a week of intense and enjoyable study with dancers and musicians chosen from among Hungary’s finest professionals. The setting is in the Mendocino Woodlands, an old CCC camp nestled in the heart of the Jackson State Forest of majestic Redwoods near Mendocino, California. The natural beautiful of the camp adds magic to the program that brings campers and staff members back year after year. The Camp was founded in 1982 by two Americans, Howard Franklin and Mary Wallace (now Mary W. Tobak) with an American-Hungarian, Éva Kish, all of whom were intensely interested in learning traditional Hungarian folk dances and bringing the experience to the United States. Over the years the Camp has featured such well-known artists as dancers/choreographers Zoltán Zsurafsky and Zsuzsa Vince, Zoltán Farkas and Ildikó Tóth, Szilárd Szabó and Ildikó Németh, and Zsolt Szilágyi and Marianna Újlaki. The bands have included the Ökrös Ensemble, Méta, Téka, Zengõ, Tilinkó and Somogy with guests including renowned violinist and ethnomusicologist, Béla Halmos, world famous cimbalom player, Kálmán Balogh, and such singers as Éva Molnár, András Berecz, and Csilla Freppán.

BUDAPEST SEMESTERS IN MATHEMATICS
Brief Program Description
This section is meant to present a broad brush overview of several aspects of the BSM Program:
  • Who participates? What is the basic calendar? What are the classes? Who teaches the students? How do students receive credit?
Participant Profile During the past decade, participation in the BSM Program has grown to enroll thirty-five to forty-five students each semester. The mean home school grade point average of a participant is just over 3.7 on a scale of 4, with mathematics grade point slightly higher. Other than the fact that participants are talented and motivated in mathematics they are the most heterogeneous group I have ever been associated with. In general BSM students are an adventurous lot who tend to engage their chosen activities with spirited determination and energy. Several recent participants have used their ``spare time'' to play in one of the Liszt Academy's orchestras, others have served Hungarian relief organizations aiding refugees from Romania and countries of the former Yugoslavia, several have joined sports teams in swimming, soccer, fencing; all have taken the opportunity to investigate various parts of Hungary and the surrounding European countries. Most of our students attend their first opera in Budapest and many become devotees of the classical musical and intellectual culture which is still vibrant and affordable. Although the BSM Program does not organize outings we do post information concerning cultural events and show students where they can purchase tickets, but little encouragement is needed. These students are competent and engaged!

a similiar center, Suomalaisen kirjallisuuden keskus - Finn Irodalmi Központ,

According to the plan certain libraries specialize in rare language materials.
They function as reference and inter-library lending libraries who serve the whole country. Other centers are the Romanian Center in the libraries of Toijala and Valkeakoski,
Norwegian Center in Espoo, Polish Center in Tampere, Lappish Center in Rovaniemi,
Estonian Center in Kotka, Icelandic Center in Kuopio and Danish Center in Turku. Hungary was a natural choice for Pori because one of the most active Finnish-Hungary Clubs,
which was founded in 1972 operates here. Also contacts with Pori`s friendship town Eger are very warm.

On the Hungarian National Community of Slovakia (1997 March) Localization 92 % of the Hungarians of Slovakia - some 670 thousand souls - live along the Southern border of the Slovak Republic on the territory of approx. 8500 sq.kms. On the said territory the Hungarians comprise 67% of the total population. According to the 1991 census 566 thousand persons declared themselves as ethnic Hungarians, 608 thousand persons as Hungarians per mother tongue. This makes 10,5 or 11 % of the population respectively. The vast majority of persons belonging to the Hungarian community lives in settlements with Hungarian majority, which constitute a compact territorial unit: the frontier between the Hungarian and Slovak ethnic group might be clearly drawn; in 437 settlements there is a Hungarian majority, in 85 ones the proportion of Hungarians is 10-50 %. Political representation Current problems a) general characteristics The ambassador lady could have quoted a considerably higher proportion, too, since every calculation depends on the size of the Slovaks-inhabited territory included into the region of South Slovakia. 2.The Slovak Republic undertook - when admitted to the EU - the revision of the "Beneš-decrees", the provisions of which afflicted the Hungarians and the Germans (Opinion No. 175/1993, para 10).
