February 24, 2003 COUNTRY DESCRIPTION: Hungary is a stable democracy with a market economy. Tourist facilities outside Budapest are widely available, if not as developed as those found in Western Europe. Visitors considering a trip are encouraged to read the Embassy's consular web site: http://www.usembassy.hu/consular.htm.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A passport is required. A visa is not required for tourist stays of up to three months. If you plan to reside or study in Hungary, a visa must be obtained from the Embassy of the Republic of Hungary at 3910 Shoemaker Street N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, telephone (202) 362-6730, internet address http://www.hungaryemb.org, or the nearest Hungarian Consulate in Los Angeles or New York.
In an effort to prevent international child abduction, many governments have initiated procedures at entry/exit points. These often include requiring documentary evidence of relationship and permission for the child's travel from the parent(s) or legal guardian not present. Having such documentation on hand, even if not required, may facilitate entry or departure.
SAFETY AND SECURITY: Prior police approval is required for public demonstrations in Hungary and police oversight is routinely provided to ensure adequate security for participants and passers-by. Nonetheless, situations may develop which could pose a threat to public safety. U.S. citizens are advised to avoid areas in which public demonstrations are taking place. For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov, where

    Government and Party Control
Ultimate responsibility for defense policy lay with the HSWP Politburo (see Party Structure , ch. 4). The party exercised several channels of control over the armed forces. The party officially controlled the army through the Government Administration and Administration Department of the Secretariat. The head of the Ministry of Defense's Main Political Administration reported to this party body and to the minister of defense. The Main Political Administration, in turn, controlled the political departments at the division level and the political deputies of the commanding officers at the subdivision level. Party cells were subordinated to the deputy commanders for political affairs. The Army Committee of the Central Committee of the HSWP supervised overall political work in the army. During peacetime the Presidential Council, whose members were subject to the HSWP's nomenklatura (see Glossary) authority, oversaw national defense; the defense committee of the National Assembly also worked closely with the Presidential Council (see

URL The Hungarian Patent Office operates an online trademark database: in English at http://www.hpo.hu/English/db/vedjegy/vedjegy.cgi in Hungarian at http://www.hpo.hu/Magyar/db/vedjegy/vedjegy.cgi
Search Variations Users can search for trademarks by entering information in the following fields: word marks or geographical indications, name of applicant and/or licensee, date of application and registration, registration number or application number, owner’s home country, classification and list of goods, kind of marks, and/or geographical origin of marks. Search results appear to be presented in chronological order, beginning with the earliest registration date and followed by pending applications in the same chronological order. The search results are available in summary format as well as full detail format. Each possible mark is listed as a hyperlink to its detailed information. The full detail format provides images of stylized and design marks, all pertinent dates, and virtually all information available in a manual search. As reported in the previous review, although the database is offered in English, the detailed information is in Hungarian only. Thus, for example, the identification of goods or recitation of services is not available to the user unless the user reads Hungarian.

The above services would significantly help in the management of administrative issues, since Hungarian citizens spend around 18 million hours every year on administrative tasks. Although there are recent improvements in certain fields (eg, the issuing of passports), there still remain plenty of time-consuming, complicated and complex tasks, such as registering vehicles, issuing birth and marriage certificates, and determining maternity allowances. Rationalisation of public registers is also among the tasks ahead. This will lead to the replacement of uneconomical and uncoordinated registries by efficient and continuously updated central registries.

Resolution adopted by the Government of the Republic of Hungary on September 18, 2001, concerning foreign and security policy measures following the terrorist attack against the United States of America (submitted by the Government of the Republic of Hungary on the same day to the National Assembly of the Republic of Hungary as a draft Parliamentary Resolution) The Government of the Republic of Hungary considers the September 11, 2001 terror attack against the United States of America as a coward act of crime committed against the entire free world. It was a horrendous attack against the entire humanity, something that is proved by the fact that senseless terror has claimed the lives of innocent citizens of as much as 62 countries. No political, religious or other justifications exist for such an act. The Government of the Republic of Hungary declares that this brutal and inhuman act must be followed by appropriate response. It is the firm conviction of the Government of the Republic of Hungary that those involved in committing these barbaric and merciless attacks must be located in order to make them accountable for the consequences of their acts. For this purpose, the support of all countries denouncing terrorism and determined to combat it by all available means is necessary. The Government of the Republic of Hungary expresses to the United States and the American people its solidarity, unconditional support and readiness to cooperate in numerous areas. At the same time, the Government of the Republic of Hungary extends its deepest condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones in these senseless and barbaric acts.
