Hydrangeas Hydrangea Hydrangeas have large blooms which bring flamboyant colour to the garden in late summer and autumn. They are easy to grow, dependable and improve with age. The mophead and lace-cap varieties of H. macrophylla are the best-known varieties. The showy flower parts are sterile florets and mopheads have these packed around the flower-head. Lace-caps have a single ring of showy outer florets. These surround a centre of fuzzy, fertile flowers, which are usually of a contrasting colour. History The mophead hydrangea goes back to Japan where native species with normal lace-cap flowers had been grown in gardens for hundreds of years. At some stage one of these plants is thought to have sported, or naturally mutated, and produced spherical heads full of sterile flowers, instead of just arranged at the edge. When these plants first reached the west in the 18th century they caused a sensation, initially being treated as tender and grown indoors.

Lifestyle Homepage Gardening Homepage ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Gardening Plants Plant Profiles ... Hydrangeas Hydrangea Growing tips Soil conditions It is not possible to predict the colour of hydrangeas as this depends on soil type. A deep blue variety in an acid soil will turn pink if moved to a limier spot and vice versa, in a similar effect to litmus paper. Many also change flower colour as they mature so identifying varieties with any certainty can be confusing. Soil acid test To help achieve a blue colour on a limey soil, special blueing compounds composed of aluminium sulphate can be used. However, the hydrangeas will be unlikely to capture the azure blue of plants grown in naturally acidic soils. Another tactic is to grow a compact variety such as 'Blue Bird' in a large container filled with lime-free compost and supplement its liquid feeding with a blueing compound. Plant care Hydrangeas are true survivors and can often be seen flowering in overgrown or neglected gardens. With a small amount of care they will do really well. Both mopheads and lace-caps prefer dappled shade against a north- or west-facing wall. If it is too bright they are likely to scorch.

Gregg's Cobwebbed Welcome to my Flower (and Tree and Shrub) Garden! And info about Hydrangeas HYDRANGEAS The Easy, Tricky, Art to Pruning Them! The Hydrangea Macrophylla (mak-ro-FIL-a) - with the rounded blue to pink balls (mophead), or the flattened flowers (lacecaps), is a prime example of a shrub that is better not pruned at all, rather than to be pruned badly or too much. There is only one kind of hydrangea that blooms pink to blue - it is called Macrophylla. All the other kinds of hydrangeas bloom white! It is necessary to understand how they grow to maturity in order not to have to cut them back too drastically, because this produces weak, overlong shoots, which will droop under the weight of the flowers and leaves. The blue to pink is determined by soil pH - bluest color is produced in acidic soil, pinkest in alkaline soil. You cannot change a white blooming variety to blue or pink (and vice versa). Adding lime to the soil around the root area will encourage it to bloom more pink. Amending the soil with aluminium sulfate will encourage bluer blooms. This process takes about 1 year to show.

It's not officially spring, but if you're like me, you're really looking forward to it. You know, to visit a greenhouse on a cold and wet day is one of the best ways to get an early breath of it. It's just amazing to me what growers can do by manipulating light and temperature to bring beautiful hydrangeas like this into bloom early. These have to be one of my favorite plants because they're so versatile. You can enjoy them indoors as a long lasting houseplant and them shift them outside and enjoy them as a flowering shrub for years. These are known as old fashioned or big leaf hydrangeas. They're the ones that if you plant them out in your garden, if your soil is acidic, they'll turn blue, but if your soil is sweet or alkaline, they'll turn pink like this. Now these are probably the most popular, but there are others that are equally beautiful like these white ones over here. These are the laced capped hydrangeas. They look a little lacy because you have two types of flowers on one plant and the overall shape of the flower head is much flatter, not as round.

SHADE LOVING HYDRANGEAS
Like everyone else, I like solutions to problems, and for many, the hydrangea is a plant that can help you with some of those more difficult areas around the garden. It's a plant that I've found to be perfectly suited for growing in areas where you don't have much light or it might be moist. I found that they grow well on the north side of the house. You're probably familiar with the old fashioned variety. You know the ones with the large pompom-like blossoms that can bloom pink or blue depending on the soil chemistry. A creamy white variety I grow is called ‘Annabelle’. It has many intriguing stages of development, within the same plant there are nice subtle variations in bloom size and color. Annabelle hydrangeas are wonderful in contrast with plants such as variegated dogwood and variegated miscanthus grass. The large blossoms persist through summer, right up until the fall at which time I bring them in for drying. Another variety of hydrangea I planted just last year is called ‘Lace Cap’. The name obviously comes from the lacy appearance of the bloom. Now what I find interesting about this plant is that in a single blossom you actually have two kinds of flowering going on. There are tiny little flowerets in the center that are fertile, with both male and female parts. And on the edge, there are large showy flowers that are sterile. They serve to lure pollinators. No matter what variety of hydrangea you choose, you'll find that they like plenty of humus or organic matter in the soil and consistent moisture. If you've got a shady, moist area, give one a try.

HYDRANGEAS (Saxifragaceae) grow well in most areas of Tasmania. Many varieties are available. Hydrangeas prefer rich, moist soils in a protected, partially shaded position, frost resistant but drought tender. Growing approximately 2meters tall with many stem which are erect. Leaves are ovate-acuminate, with serrate margins. Flowers are pink, white or blue, occuring in large, domed heads and appearing in summer.
BLUE HYDRANGEA
Will only remain blue if grown in acid soil, which can be attained with regular applications of Aluminium Sulphate.
PINK HYDRANGEA
Will flourish in alkaline soil, which can be retained with regular applications of Lime.
WHITE HYDRANGEAS
Do not change colour. Hydrangea should be severely pruned in winter.

Wooly Adelgids and Fiorinia Scale on Hemlocks (Tsuga) can be controlled if caught at the early stages of infestation. During March, after it warms up but before the new growth starts, spray the entire plant with dormant oil. It needs to dry 2-3 hours before the temperature drops below 32 degrees. A second application may be needed and can be applied in June to early July at a 1 oz. Dormant oil to 1 gal. of water ratio (follow the directions on the bottle regarding temperature range for applications). The spreading rate is approximately 3.5 oz. per gal. of water on your applicator. It is important to get as close to 100% coverage as possible. This means you'll need to spray up, under the needles. Dormant oil is organic and safe to use.

During the late winter and early spring our homes often need a hint of the warmer days ahead to brighten things up a bit. An old fashioned hydrangea can be just the splash of color you are looking for. You can find them in garden centers and often even at your local grocery this time of year. The interesting thing about old fashioned or big leafed hydrangeas is that the same plant can bloom either pink or blue. The difference is all about soil chemistry. If you want pink hydrangeas, the soil needs to be slightly alkaline. And, you can achieve this by simply applying lime. Now if you want them to be blue, the soil needs to be slightly acidic. And that can be done by adding aluminum sulfate. The name hydrangea, in part, means water, and they come by this name honestly. These plants like to be consistently moist. That's why you so often find them growing on the north side of houses where the temperature is cool and the soil is damp. After the blossoms fade, just cut them off, and plant the plant outside in the spring once temperatures are mild. And then next year it'll rebloom again for you.

    Hydrangea
The group consists of hardy and tender shrubs and woody climbers.
They are mostly deciduous plants, though a few of the tender species are evergreen. They are natives of the Himalayas, North and South America, and central and eastern Asia.
These flowering shrubs have different flower forms - from the large globes of the "mopheads" to the discs of the "lacecaps" to the thick cones of oakleaf and panicle hydrangeas. They come in an array of colors from pure white to brilliant crimson, pale lilac to intense azure. Some varieties produce blossoms with two-toned colors, while some flowers have contrasting eyes, and some may even be speckled or striped with another color.
There are two kinds of florets in the flower heads.
The sterile or ray florets are male and form the large, colorful sepals on the outside of the flower head. The fertile or perfect florets are small and inconspicuous. They bear the male and female parts and are usually found in the center of the cluster. The flower heads of mophead hydrangeas consist almost entirely of sterile florets.
As well as their lovely flowers, some hydrangeas are valued for their attractive foliage or bark.
