Staff Writer Judith King is no master gardener and has no degree in horticulture, but she is a self-proclaimed hydrangea enthusiast. Mrs. King gleaned her extensive hydrangea knowledge from many years working off and on at Nurseries Caroliniana in North Augusta. She now shares that knowledge and her love of hydrangeas on her Web site, hydrangeashydrangeas.com . Being a gardener, Mrs. King included lots of practical information on the site, including descriptions of the types of hydrangeas, proper pruning, planting, propagating and fertilizing techniques, how to change bloom color, purchasing tips, recommended retailers and lots of links and books about hydrangeas. "It's a great site if you like hydrangeas, and how could anyone not like hydrangeas?" said Kay Mills, a Georgia master gardener who uses the site. The section on drying hydrangeas is a popular part of the site, Mrs. King said. She even has a page of frequently asked questions and can answer through e-mail any questions on subjects that are not already listed.

Fletcher, NC 28732 Nature of Work: Most gardening texts state that bigleaf hydrangeas, Hydrangea macrophylla var. macrophylla, H. macrophylla var. normalis, H. macrophylla var. serrata and their hybrids form flower buds on old wood the year before flowering. If those buds are destroyed by pruning or freeze injury then plants will not flower because new flower buds will not be formed then develop and open during the current growing season. Recent research has demonstrated that bigleaf hydrangea cultivars exist that are truly remontant as well as others that will flower in autumn even if they have already flowered earlier in the year. Speculation exists concerning whether the flowers are from lateral buds that were not removed or freeze damaged or whether new flower buds form during favorable conditions in late summer and early fall then open during an extended period of short days and non-freezing autumn temperatures (1). To the landscape and gardening trade, it does not matter why these hydrangeas rebloom or continue to bloom into autumn. They want to know which ones will be both summer and fall flowering. The bloom times of cultivars in an existing hydrangea collection (2) at MHCREC, Fletcher, NC, were recorded weekly during the 2001 growing season. Plants that were flowering in July as well as flowering on October 1, 2001 are listed as reblooming in Table 1. Those that flowered during the 2001 season but were not in bloom on October 1 are listed in Table 2. Those that did not flower at all have been reported previously (2).

The Plantfinder
Reviewed by Barry Glick Those gardeners who have never seen The Plantfinder don't know what they are missing. This 800 page book is the bible of cultivated plants. The 1995/96 edition not only lists over 70,000 plants by family, species, genus and cultivar, but contains quite a bit of taxanomic and other useful information. The book is a well organized and easy to use and is one of the most important reference manuals you can have. I asked Chris Philips, who created The Plantfinder , to write briefly about how the world-famous book came to be. "Some ten years ago I retired to the county of Worcester in the U.K. (about 120 miles west of London). Here I acquired some 6 acres of ground including a one-acre lake and a lot of daffodils, as the gardens had previously belonged to Michael Jefferson-Brown, a renowned daffodil breeder. "Knowing little about plants, I made lists of suitable items that I had seen on TV or in local gardens. I then went to the nearest nursery and could only find 10% of my wants. Some they had never even heard of. I wrote off for a some catalogues and through them obtained a few more of the plants. "At this stage I thought there must be an easier way! As I knew a little about computer databases, all I needed to do, I thought, was to write to every nursery in the U.K. and enter their lists onto my computer. "Fools rush in ..." I soon realized that no two nurseries spelt the plants' names the same (nor even called them by the same name). As I knew nothing of botanical nomenclature I soon obtained the services of a colleague, Tony Lord, who can spot a misspelled Latin name at 100 paces.

The stems and foliage of hydrangeas are covered with brown scale insects and their white oval egg masses in early summer. Other plants affected
Acer Prunus and Viburnum Cause
These are the waxy egg masses of the hydrangea scale, a recent pest in Britain originating from Japan. It was first found in the London area in the late 1980s and is now well established in southern England. Young nymphs hatch from eggs in midsummer and suck sap from the undersides of leaves. In late summer the nymphs move to the stems where they overwinter before maturing in late spring. Heavily infested plants lack vigour and look unsightly. Non-chemical control
There are no effective non-chemical controls, other than destroying infested plants and replanting in the autumn. Chemical control
Spray against young nymphs in mid-July with malathion (Murphy Liquid Malathion). This pesticide is being withdrawn for commercial reasons and may no longer be available from shops. Gardeners who already have it can continue using it until 30th November 2002 when its registration as a pesticide expires. To reduce the risk of spray damage to the leaves avoid spraying hydrangeas in hot sunny weather or if the soil is dry. This will be a difficult pest to control with the pesticides that remain available to amateur gardeners. RHS Finders RHS Plant Finder RHS Garden Finder RHS Event Finder

The true flowers are almost unnoticeable, buried deep inside the blooms. (PHOTO: BY KEITH SCOTT MORTON ) These knockouts have a 70-million-year-old pedigree Plant enthusiasts have a tendency to be rather florid, if you'll pardon the pun, when they describe their favorite advertisement species. But hydrangeas number among those species for which the word remarkable can be used without exaggeration. How many plant families can have their history traced back 70 million years; are native to three continents; contain members that are bushes, trees, and vines; are both deciduous and evergreen; and whose flowers can completely change color from year to year or season to season? Not to mention that almost all hydrangeas are extremely hardy, easy to grow, and tolerate both full sun and partial shade. A variety of hydrangea exists to suit any garden, from clay pots to meticulously cultivated acres.

Charlotte Graham I want to get rid of the dead flowers on my hydrangea but I'm not sure how to remove or cut the flower away without ruining the plant. Could you give me some help? Jim Silva Hi Charlotte and Jim. You both ask about caring for hydrangeas, and I'm sure there are many hydrangea lovers out there who are seeking the same information! Charlotte, let me address your issue first. You say your beautiful pink hydrangea didn't bloom this year? Well, I can give you a couple of tips that should remedy the situation and have your hydrangeas blossoming in all their colorful splendor this spring. Pink hydrangeas are highly responsive to the pH (acid-alkaline) levels in the soil. Adding lime to the soil will make it more alkaline and help you get those pink flowers. You can also add a balanced fertilizer (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) around the dripline of the plant to help it bloom.

Most comprehensive authority on Hydrangeas
This is the best book on hydrangeas in print today. Only one other (Hydrangeas, by Millet) even comes close. Because this book is so well organized, it is extemely easy to learning all about hydrangeas - their botanical structure, the different species and how they grow. One can immediately see the differences between hydrangeas - how large they will get, how large their blooms will be, what colors they might become, and the shape of the bloom. The illustrations are beautiful and leave one dreaming of a garden full of these beauties.
A valuable reference for hydrangea lovers
This is the most comprehensive source of information on hydrangeas that I have ever seen. There is detailed advice on every aspect of growing hydrangeas, including soil preparation, watering, and the effects of color in hydrangeas due to soil content. Generous illustrations show the different types of leaves on the various types of hydrangeas. The most valuable part of the book is a section devoting a full page to specific varieties and shows a photo, characteristics in chart format and a detailed narrative description. This book is well worth the price!

Episode 99036
So I go to my local nursery. I'm looking for a plant that will bloom and grow in the shade. And I'd like it if it would bloom in the summer time instead of the spring. And I've come up with this one: hydrangea macrophylla , the big leaf hydrangea. It comes in pink and it comes in blue, and I don't know which one I want to get. Luckily I don't have to decide. Because I can change the color of this to this, at will, as if by magic. You see, what changes the color of hydrangea flowers is the presence or lack of aluminum. Now aluminum is abundant in all soils, but it's not always available. If we have plenty of aluminum available we'll have blue flowers. Without it they'll be pink.

If you haven't grown a hydrangea in your landscape, it's time to give this big blooming plant a try. Hydrangeas offer big, beautiful leaves and large clusters of long lasting flowers in white, pink, red and blue, which last from late spring to late summer, gradually fading in color. The flowers are quite spectacular and can conjure up warm memories of Grandmothers' garden. With their wonderful texture and blooms, hydrangeas are garden showstoppers. Although one hydrangea is a vine, the most familiar kinds are deciduous shrubs forming 4-8 foot mounds. All hydrangeas need well-drained soil, generously enriched with compost or other soil amendments. They also need a constant supply of moisture and benefit from soaking once or twice weekly during dry weather. Choose hydrangeas that suit your taste and garden design goals. Hydrangea macrophyllas Care of hydrangeas is very easy. In spring or fall, plant hydrangeas in well-amended soil. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer or amend soil to change flower color if desired. Watch for chlorosis, yellowed leaves caused by iron deficiency, and apply chelated iron as needed. In the summer, keep well-watered and well-mulched and take cuttings to start new plants.
