Law Related Education (LRE) is citizenship education with an emphasis on understanding the role of law as the basis of democratic society. LRE programs aim to help students, kindergarten through twelfth grade, know how and why our legal system operates as it does, the importance of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and the roles of lawyers and judges. LRE began in Idaho in 1985 as a public service program of the Idaho Law Foundation. Law Related Education focuses on "real world" issues and emphasizes interactive and engaging techniques such as role-play and simulation, mock trials, moot courts, debate, and case method analysis. Curriculum materials encourage the development of critical thinking, reasoning, decision-making, and oral and written communication skills. Earth Science Education in Idaho
NEWS LINKS (Resources for earth science education) The Idaho Earth Science Teachers Association (IESTA) has formed interactive partnerships with the triad of education, government, and industry. The products of these partnerships include programs and training in Idaho earth science, and the development, testing and distribution of classroom materials, student activities, and field trip guides. In the summer of 1992 a small group of Idaho teachers, in cooperation with the Idaho Geological Survey, began an Annual Summer Field Trip and Conference for the IESTA. Since then the event has grown to the point that typically 50 people attend the field conference each year. This week-long event includes geology and mining field trips, exercises, classroom materials, and the development of student activities by participants. For the past several years the Idaho Bureau of Disaster Services, through a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has co-sponsored the workshop to provide training in geologic hazard awareness and education. Where possible, companies have provided tours, campgrounds, and talks by specialists. In 1997, the IESTA cooperated with the National Energy Foundation to include materials and instruction from the Out of the Rock educational program. The IESTA works closely with the Idaho Science Teachers Association to plan the science teachers’ annual conference. IESTA maintains a booth at each conference which displays products, recruits members, and provides information about Idaho earth science and the association’s activities and events. The products displayed include IESTA materials and selected publications of the Idaho Geological Survey and the Idaho State University Press. The IESTA sponsors presentations and keynote speakers by earth scientists from Idaho, and it distributes examples of Idaho rocks, minerals, and fossils donated by agencies, companies, and the association members.

WELCOME instructors, donors, sponsors and readers To help students understand the history and challenges of the war in Iraq, The Idaho Statesman has purchased a 16-page student supplement titled: “IRAQ: How We Came to War.” This section for grades 4 and up is designed to explain the 2003 conflict by looking at key events that have shaped history in Iraq and the world since the end of the Persian Gulf War. All these developments drew international attention at the time they occurred. Taken together, they show that historic events - even one as great as war - are not caused by a single thing, but by many things. Reading these accounts, students will gain a greater understanding of how the U.S. government reached decisions that took us where we are in Iraq - and where we may be going. Each section is inserted into a copy of the Friday April 4th edition of The Idaho Statesman for students to read, use in the classroom and take home!

This article discusses school reform from a cultural perspective. It speculates that a primary reason why Indian students continue to suffer higher dropout rates and lower achievement is because a "dissonance" exists between American Indian culture and the culture of our public schools system. It suggests that certain kinds of teaching methods and school reform strategies are more "culturally congruent" with traditional tribal teaching practices and therefore should be considered for adoption among public schools serving Indian student populations.

    TechLearning News
    • Idaho teachers may soon have to prove their technology proficiency in order to renew their teaching certificates. California is launching an on-line, self-assessment tool that allows educators to determine their level of technology proficiency and select professional development courses appropriate for their current skill level. Using the Web, schools are finding ways to communicate needed information - from homework assignment to absences directly to parents. The Department of Education's redesigned Web site features improved organization and functionality and offers users increased personalization.
Requiring Technology Proficiency The Idaho State Board of Education recently approved a motion requiring teachers to be proficient in technology in order to renew their teaching certificates. The state legislature must approve the new requirement before it goes into effect. Idaho teachers currently are required to attend technology-related professional development, but training has not been tied to licensure requirements. The Idaho Department of Education reports that 86.6% of about 14,000 certified teachers and administrators are able to demonstrate technology competence, a long way toward the state's goal of having 90% of certified teachers and administrators technology-proficient.
