12. Iditarod Facts
Facts about the iditarod, researched in response to repeated chargesof inhumane treatment of dogs. THE iditarod. Fact, Not Fiction.
http://sunhusky.com/Facts/
THE IDITAROD
Fact, Not Fiction
Dr. John Bramante's pro-Iditarod response to April 1st story in ADN Letter from Dr. Michael Davis , who was NOT happy to discover his name and asthma research
was being used by race opponents. I think you'll find it interesting. As a teacher and dog lover, I'd enjoyed teaching Gary Paulsen's Woodsong (a work of FICTION, as is Winterdance ) and a unit on the Iditarod race for some time before it was brought to my attention that the race was controversial. Surprised and a bit horrified, thinking that I'd possibly been indirectly supporting something abusive, I began to research the subject, reading everything I could put my hands on ( reference list ), talking to both race critics and supporters, as well as those who've attended and competed in the race, plus using my own common sense. Then, in March 2000, I made the journey to Alaska (at my own expense) to check out things firsthand, returning in the summer and again for Iditarod 2001. My conclusions? While the Iditarod may not be perfect, no sport is, it isn’t the horror story its critics painted it to be, either. Others have done the same, including teachers Ann Morgan and Aarin Holmes. Attacked by activists prior to her trip, Morgan focused on their concerns and addresses them

Discovery Online Exploration site about the iditarod race.Category Kids and Teens Sports and Hobbies Sports iditarod...... Billy is a Wyoming musher preparing to run his first iditarod Sled Dog Race fromAnchorage to Nome. Quick Time 3.2MB. iditarod Rule of the Day Rule 6.
http://www.discovery.com/area/exploration/iditarod/iditarod.html
Making the Team
DUBOIS, Wyo., Feb. 16 I close the pickup door and stand and stare, surrounded by what must be a million cold stars. Twenty miles from the nearest plowed road, it's just me and the Rockies and the kind of winter light show you get in the best parts of the American West. Then a tenor voice, clear and strong, rises from down the hill. The singer is easy to find, his movements outlined in the snow by his own headlamp. He is my friend, Billy Snodgrass. And he's serenading his dogs. All 80 of them.
Musher Billy Snodgrass and his dogs Feeding, doctoring, poop scooping and caressing takes two hours, and Billy rises well before the sun each day to tend to his Alaskan Huskies at his Washakie Outfitting kennel outside of Dubois, Wyoming. When the dogs sense my presence, they cry out in an anxious chorus of whining, howling and barking that drowns Billy's song. We're all anxious these days. Billy is a Wyoming musher preparing to run his first Iditarod Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome. I'm preparing to follow him and the dogs all the way across Alaska 1,151 miles through the frozen interior on a snowmobile to bring you the experience first hand. And the dogs are anxious to run; it's what they were born and bred to do. I join Billy as he whistles away, chopping frozen chunks of elk meat with a wood splitter. He pitches a hunk to each eager dog, calling them by name Nitro and Pilot and Vampire and Mogly, Dirt and Gravel and Spandex and Lefty. He glances up and wishes me a good morning, which is all the acknowledgment I expect.
