He'd had to pack a key leader who hurt her foot stepping in a hole. His dogs were wracked by a stomach virus. They were down in the dumps and barely picking at their food. He wound up dropping three lead dogs in this Yukon River village, and was down to a single leader. Bybee took his mandatory 24-hour layover and hoped for the best.

Huskihaus Dmitri CD 1974-1988 (Troll's Tumak of Seabreese x Snoshu's Tai Tai of Hushihaus) Command Lead Dog, Iditarod Veteran, ISHC Iditarod Award, ISHC Limited Class Racing Award, ISHC Combination Award. Our class has done a month long unit on the Iditarod Dogsled Race in Alaska. The people involved are incredible and we have learned so much about Alaska and its history. Please, click on the topics below and let us give you our own guided tour of Alaska and the Iditarod. Iditarod History Iditarod 2000 Alaska Rules of the Race The Dogs Sled and Gear After we watched the real Iditarod and learned about the dogs, gear, route, and preparations, we had our own "Cove Arctic Day". This was a day the students had to plan themselves, just like the mushers have to prepare for the real Iditarod. First, the children had to develop a route for the race. This route had to include six well placed checkpoints. Then, they had to plan who would be the musher between each checkpoint. Each student could only be the musher once. Next, they had to decide where their team wanted to take the mandatory layover and who would bring the food and drink to drop at that checkpoint. They needed to plan their team's sled and who would bring the equipment they decided they would need. And finally, they had to bring enough food for their team and the adult volunteers to add to the hot dogs our school cafeteria donated for our cookout after the race. What a lot of work and careful planning!!! The class wants to thank all the parent volunteers who made this day possible. It takes about twenty volunteers to man the activities and checkpoints. Without these people, we couldn't have our Arctic Day!

HOW THE IDITAROD GOT STARTED. The Iditarod Trail began in Seward during the gold rush days. It stretched to Knik then on to the gold camp of Iditarod and eventually to Nome. It's over a thousand miles from Anchorage to Nome via the presently used Iditarod Trail race route. It crosses two mountain ranges, passes through ice-locked wilderness areas, and winds over 200 miles along the mighty Yukon River. The mushers leave civilization at Knik and there's only small towns and villages to break the monotony of traveling in bone-chilling cold until they reach the historic goldrush town of Nome, perched on the shores of the Bering Sea. The historic Iditarod Trail was established by its many travelers and freighters. But having a sled dog race over the trail was initiated by Dorothy Page, a history buff who lives in Wasilla. Back in 1964 Page was serving as chairman of the Wasilla-Knik Centennial Committee and also as secretary of the Aurora Dog Mushers Club. As a spectacular centennial year project, Page talked to many people about re-opening the Iditarod Trail, beginning at Knik, and having a sled dog race to call attention to Alaska's past and the part the mushers and their dog teams had played in opening up the Territory of Alaska. Page could see that raising sled dogs and mushing were going downhill due to the wide use of snowmachines. She felt mushing needed to be revived before the dogs were "completely run down by snow machines." But Page also knew she could talk on forever about a big new race unless she could get a musher interested in her "weird idea. "

As competitive sled dog racing kennels go, Anduril has a very small number of dogs. Rob and Cara believe in quality, not quantity. They work with training, good nutrition, care, and love to make the most of each dog's potential. Because of their love of dogs and dedication to the sport of mushing, Rob and Cara make many public appearances and initiate programs for school children each year. Rob also works on the board of directors for The Race To The Sky. In the 94-95 race season, Rob and "the kids" (the dogs) placed in the top ten in four of the five races they entered. In the fifth race (in which they did not place in the top ten), they received the "Best Cared for Team" award. Rob competed in Montana's Race To The Sky 350-mile sled dog race in 1992, 1995 (placed 7th), 1996 (placed 2nd), 1997 (placed 14th), 1998 (placed 3rd), and 1999 (placed 7th). In 1998 Rob also raced in the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in Minnesota, and finished in 11th place. He has also participated in many other races and placed well with the team. His sled dog racing is often "family vacation time," and a great time to get together with other friends/mushers. Iditarod 2000 Sponsors Running the Iditarod will be a once in a lifetime event for us. We love and care for our dogs 365 days of the year, but a trip like the Iditarod brings up a lot of added expenses.
