85. Iditarod
iditarod History. Joe Redington organized the modern iditarod race. Junior iditarodThe Junior iditarod is run a week before the iditarod each year.
http://www.mcleanschool.org/iditarod.html
Iditarod History Joe Redington organized the modern Iditarod race. He is known as the "Father of the Iditarod". The first race of the complete trail was in 1973. One possible meaning of the word Iditarod is "clear water". The modern race memorializes Balto, a sled dog who played an important role in Alaskan history. In 1925 many children in Nome became ill with Diphtheria. All medicine in Nome was used up and the nearest supply was in Anchorage. A train took the medicine to Nenana, and then a dog sled relay was organized to take it the rest of the way. The relay took a week. Balto was the lead sled dog of the team led by musher Gunnar Kassen. He is famous for working very hard to finish the race. Another dog named Togo is known as the animal that went the longest distance in the relay of the serum. Official and Real Start
The ceremonial start of the Iditarod race takes place each year on the first Saturday in March in Anchorage, Alaska. The actual timed race is restarted in Wasilla after mushers have gotten out into the country. Checkpoints
There are many checkpoints along the route of the race. On even numbered years, racers use the northern route, and on odd numbered years they use the southern route. Some checkpoints are at villages along the trail, and some are at places deserted during the rest of the year. At each checkpoint there are veterinarians to check the health of dogs, volunteers to help, and supplies of dog food and straw for dog bedding. Mushers have to provide the dog food that is flown out to the checkpoints ahead of the race.

What We Did As our class studied the usual fourth grade subjects, we also learned many interesting facts that prepared us to follow the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race beginning the first Saturday in March. In September we "adopted" a wolf from the Nez Perce pack in Idaho. We learned about wolves on the Internet and in science class also. Next, we used Internet treasure hunts to learn about dogs, how they are related to wolves, and about sled dogs. Then the geography, native people, and lifestyles of Alaska became part of our computer research. Finally, we learned about the Iditarod race. On our page we will share some of the information that we learned this year. Click here to go back Designed by John Stickley

    http://www.alaskanet.com/Tourism/Activities/iditarod/history.html
    T HE O RIGIN
In 1925, a diphtheria epidemic threatened the town of Nome. The much needed serum was raced from Nenana to Nome by dog team. Twenty teams relayed the medicine 674 miles in 27.5 hours! Today this historic event is commemorated with the world famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race. The competition starts in Anchorage on the first Saturday in March. The first musher arrives in Nome approximately 10- 1 2 days later. Teams continue to arrive day and night for the next week and a half. H ISTORY O F T HE R ED L ANTERN During the days of Alaska sled dog freighting and mail carrying, dog drivers relied on a series of roadhouses between their village destinations. Since these mushers ventured out in all types of weather they decided to use a "flight plan." Word was relay ed ahead that a musher and team were on the trail, and a kerosene lamp was lit and hung outside the roadhouse. It not only helped the dog driver find his destination at night, but more importantly, it signified that a team or teams were somewhere out on the trail. The lamp was not extinguished until the musher safely reached his destination. Beginning in 1986, Chevron USA continued the tradition by hanging a "Red Lantern," as it is known today, on the burl arch in Nome. Each year the lantern is lit at the beginning of the race and hung on the finish line, not to be extinguished until the very last musher crosses the finish line. Once the musher crosses the line, (s)he then extinguishes the lantern, signifying the official end of the race. Thus, the last musher in a race is called the "Red Lantern" musher.

    Red Lantern Winner Comes Home
by Jon Little Iditarod rookie Russ Bybee knew he was in trouble at Ruby, with more than two-thirds of the race to go. He'd had to pack a key leader who hurt her foot stepping in a hole. His dogs were wracked by a stomach virus. They were down in the dumps and barely picking at their food. He wound up dropping three lead dogs in this Yukon River village, and was down to a single leader. Bybee took his mandatory 24-hour layover and hoped for the best.

The iditarod the First Day of the Last Great Race . It started nearlythreequarters of a century ago with a serum run from Anchorage
    http://www.alaska.net/~design/scenes/iditarod/iditarod.html
    The Iditarod:
the First Day of the "Last Great Race"
I t started nearly three-quarters of a century ago with a serum run from Anchorage to the coastal community of Nome in Northwest Alaska. There were no roads then between the two communities more than 1,000 miles apart, and there are none today. A train took the serum as far as Nenana. It was carried for the last 674 miles by dogsled. A relay of 20 mushers responded to the medical emergency a diphtheria epidemic. T he photos on this page are from the 1996 race. On March 2nd, 1996, about 900 dogs and their mushers gathered on Fourth Avenue in downtown Anchorage to set off on a similar trip. This time it was simply for the adventure of it. Several were hoping to win some of the $300,000 prize money in the 24th running of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race but most could not expect to even meet their expenses. (A local sports writer referred to $100,000 dog kennels in a story about a musher he described as an exception to that trend.) O n the first day of the race, 60 mushers - most of them Alaskans but some from as far away as Norway, Italy and Japan - raced 20 miles from downtown Anchorage to Eagle River.

LATEST NEWS FROM HAPPY TRAILS March 25 - Following are Martin's notes concerning each of this year's finishing dogs. Bronson The unlikely hero and Iditarod record holder from last year came into Nome in grand style once again. I observed that Bronson, like last year, seemed tireless, had a tendency to veer left and maintained his body weight perfectly. If one would clone a dog, Bronson might be the mold. Inca What a difference a year can make. He was the first dog dropped from the record setting team because of a sore shoulder last year. This year however Inca not only stayed healthy, but set the pace in the Kusko 300, the junior Iditarod and was a major leader in my Iditarod team. Luna always happy, small and portly does not look much like the great leader that she is. No matter how difficult the trail, she seems to glide over it with ease. All the team members get along with her great. Luna also led Nikolai's junior Iditarod team.
