Programming in IDL
  • Kinds of Programs in IDL Conditional Statements Types of Programs
    • Batch Files
      • A batch file works just like something you type in at the command line. Execute a batch file with @mybatch . Note the Good for taking care of a bunch of common tasks. For example, I use the following batch file to (re)compile and run a procedure which has several supporting functions and procedures (notice they are also recompiled).
        retall
        close, /all
        .run read_writeequator
        .run onion
        .run hold_mixing_ratios
        .run plotmod
onion As seen above, batch files can execute 'executive' commands ( .run, .compile ...). Procedures and functions cannot use these commands, which can make compiling supporting routines tricky. Inserting a batch file into another program is just like copying the contents of the batch file into that location in the new program. You can use this to save a lot of typing of common blocks of code.
      Main's
      • Has no declaration a the beginning (contrast this with functions and procedures) and ends with END Only one main can be in use at a time.

Practical IDL Programming > Customer Review #1: Excellent practical guide to IDL
If youre like me, youve probably been confused at times by the semantics of IDL. Ive been using IDL for several years now and I still run into obstacles every now and then. What I needed was a book that went through the basics first (like a C or Fortran book) and then covered the really practical stuff like plotting, imaging, saving output etc. Liam Gumley has done a great job here in showing the reader how to put IDL to work. I also own Dave Fannings book, and the two books complement each other nicely. However Id have to give the edge to Practical IDL Programming for its clear and straightforward explanation of IDL fundamentals, and for very clear and well explained example programs, many of which I now use every day. IDL command-line recall problem
Many people have complained about command-line recall problems with the new version of IDL (5.0.2) which we began using after the HP-UX upgrade. The problem manifests as an inability to use the up/down arrow keys to recall commands in IDL, or to use any of the command-line editting functions. IDL technical support has been contacted and is aware of the problem. They have suggested two temporary fixes until the problem can be properly rectified.
  • Try issuing a "Hard reset" from your terminal For NCD terminals this can be done from the "File" pulldown menu. From Xterms, this is done by pressing the "CTRL" key and the middle mouse button at the same time on the xterm window (and then select "hard reset" from the menu that pops up.

Several software packages are used in the Kelly/Barlow lab, but the two most important are M ATLAB and LabVIEW. M ATLAB is technical computing environment for high-performance numeric computation and visualization developed by MathWorks. LabVIEW, developed by National Instruments, is a graphical programming development environment based on the G programming language for data and image acquisition and analysis and instrument control. Recently, programming in IDL is replacing image analysis with MATLAB and LabVIEW. IDL (Interactive Data Language) is a computing environment for the interactive analysis and visualization of data. IDL integrates an array-oriented language with numerous mathematical analysis and graphical display techniques.

Until about 5 years ago, there were no good primers for beginners, but now, you canfind books like idl programming Techniques by David Fanning and our text
    http://astrosun.tn.cornell.edu/courses/astro310/Intro.html
Introduction to Tutorials Interactive Data Language (IDL) is a proprietary software system distributed by Research Systems, Inc., of Boulder, CO ( http://www.rsinc.com ) and available for Windows, MacOS, UNIX (including Linux), and VMS platforms. It is extremely powerful and in wide use by scientists (especially astronomers). Until about 5 years ago, there were no good primers for beginners, but now, you can find books like " IDL Programming Techniques " by David Fanning and our text book, " Practical IDL Programming " by Liam Gumley. You will need to use IDL to do the labs, but because we don't expect you to go through the whole text book in the first few weeks, we are providing you with the three tutorials. These tutorials are basically copies of the IDL tutorials written by Carl Heiles at U. C. Berkeley. With his permission, they were reproduced and edited to be appropriate for our class. We strongly recommend that you go through the tutorials step-by-step sitting in front of a computer, and the same thing applies to the text book. The tutorials are not meant to substitute for the book but rather to get you started quickly. Remember that learning IDL is a bit like learning a new language - you become more proficient as you use it. It is important to point out a few things before we begin. You will need to be familiar with at least one text editor and some display applications. Hence, each topic is elaborated below. You should become comfortable using either

Our new site written entirely in C#, hosted by ASP.NET, with dynamically generated pages data-driven from SQL Server on the back-end entered public beta Thursday, 1/23/03 at 1am ET. During the last year, we worked really hard to turn what was once referred to as "the ugliest, most-functional site for software developers" into a site that's clean, usable but full of content, we're still cleaning up links, bugs and cosmetic glitches. Now that the structural and cosmetic work is done, we're delighted to have you join us here. In the meantime, feel free to explore and please
