Physics and Careers: Finance To: Graduate Students in Physics
From: Nigel Goldenfeld Send a question to Professor Goldenfeld
Subject: Physics and Careers: Finance
This memo is to bring to your attention that there exist a number of courses at Illinois which may be useful for you should you choose to seek employment outside of physics, for example in medical physics, law, engineering or finance. These courses are free to you as enrolled graduate students, but could only be taken at a later stage in your career at considerable expense. During the last few years an increasing number of physicists have successfully made the career transition, following graduation with a Ph.D. in physics, into finance. My focus on finance in this memo is purely a reflection of my knowledge of this particular employment opportunity; a much broader range of opportunities does exist, and I strongly encourage you to explore them also. Some aspects of the trend for physicists to move into finance were covered in this article from the American Institute of Physics publication The Industrial Physicist , which is a good resource for students wishing to learn about applications of physics in the real world.

Accounting
Advertising Economics Finance ... Statistics Accounting The basic purpose of accounting is to provide trusted relevant information to management, investors, creditors, government, and sometimes the general public. Accounting is an indespensible part of running a business and can be crucial to individuals with complex financial situations as well. This being so, Accountants participate in planning, analysing, and steering the activities of a firm; provide planning, management and security to an individual's finances; and collect revenue and prepare statistics for government. However, accounting is not simply number-crunching. It is needed by business in order to make investment decisions, extend or withhold credit, and to keep companies on the "right track" and

Banks and Real Estate - Financial Literacy
Why Illinois Needs Financial Literacy
The mission of the Office of Banks and Real Estate (OBRE) is to protect and educate the public and promote confidence in the regulated industries through administration of statutory responsibilities in an efficient, professional, responsive, and innovative manner.
Given the regulatory obligation this agency has to the citizenry of Illinois, OBRE also has a commitment to ensure that it can do all within its powers to help Illinoisans to be better educated in regards to their financial lives. In doing so this agency has accepted the Governor's mandate to lead a combined effort to eradicate financial illiteracy in our state. But why is financial literacy needed? Here are just a few facts and figures:
  • Research shows that most middle school students flunk when it comes to understanding money. For example, 60% of preteens do not know the difference between cash, credit cards, and checks.*
