The city of Highland is located near the population center of the continental United States, just 35 minutes from downtown St. Louis and the world famous Gateway Arch. Three state highways converge in Highland. Interstate 70 (with two Highland exits) is three miles from downtown. The Bi-State Bus line is available for those who need to commute to St. Louis each day. There are several places you can locate commercially available maps of the community and driving directions to and from Highland on the web:
Yahoo - Highland Map Infospace - Highland Map
Also, a recent Highland Middle School project allowed 7th grade students in Doug Bradley's and Jeff Wright's classes to assemble informative maps and other information to compose a "Community Atlas." These projects were done in cooperation with some of the members of the Highland Chamber of Commerce, Steve Holt and Kevin Hemann. The links to the projects appear below:

Illinois: Geography The broad level lands that gave Illinois the nickname Prairie State were fashioned by late Cenozoic glaciation, which leveled rugged ridges and filled valleys over the northern and central parts of the state. The fertile prairies are drained by more than 275 rivers, most of which flow to the Mississippi-Ohio system; the Illinois is the largest river in the state. These rivers provided early explorers a way SW from Lake Michigan into the interior of the continent and later, in the days of canal building, played a big part in hastening settlement of the prairies. The completion of the Erie Canal linked Illinois, through the Great Lakes, to the eastern seaboard of the United States. The Illinois Waterway links Chicago to the Mississippi basin as the old Chicago and Illinois and Michigan canals once did, and the St. Lawrence Seaway provides access for oceangoing vessels. The waterways are but a part of a transportation complex that includes railroads, airlines (Chicago's O'hare airport is one of the busiest in the world), and an extensive modern highway system. The state's climate is continental, with extreme seasonal variations of temperature in parts of the state. Among Illinois's many tourist attractions are Shawnee National Forest, with recreational facilities; the Cahokia Mounds; and many state parks and historical sites, including New Salem and Lincoln's home and burial place in Springfield. An additional summer attraction is the Illinois State Fair.

    Illinois Geography
More than nine hundred streams cross the Illinois landscape and most empty into the Mississippi River. The Ohio River is the largest, joining with the Mississippi River in the southern part of the state. Construction of canals have diverted other large rivers including the Calumet and the Chicago into the Mississippi. Despite the many rivers and streams in Illinois there are few lakes. Today most lakes in the state are man-made. Water supplies often come not from the water ways, but from underground reservoirs that flow throughout many parts of the state. Water from these ancient aquifers is often more than 3,000 years old. As Illinois' population has grown some of these sources have begun to dwindle. While the underground water is abundant it is not an endless supply of water. Illinois is well-known for its expansive prairie lands. Such grassy, flat terrain covers a large portion of the state. The edges of the state in all four directions are marked by more irregular plains with gently sloping hills. The southern part of Illinois is the most different region with more hills and woodland than the rest of the state. Shawnee National Forest, an expanse of protected national woodland is in the southern part of the state. This is Illinois' only national forest. Southern Illinois also has the state's highest elevation of 1,235 feet above sea level. The state's average elevation is only 600 feet above sea level, attesting to the flatness that pervades the interior. Illinois' flat lands contain nutrient rich, black soil that has proven to be excellent for agricultural uses. Intensive farming covers much of the state's central and northern regions.

DEVELOPMENT OF GEOGRAPHY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS Geography has been an integral part of the University of Illinois since its founding in 1867, taught continuously in one or another of the instructional programs of the school. It wasn’t recognized as a degree-earning discipline until the 1920s, however, and only after another quarter-century was geography given independent departmental status. In proposing 6 departments and 15 courses of instruction, the first University Regents included commercial geography as part of a planned Department of Trade and Commerce. And the 1867 Committee on Courses reported that a Professorship of Geology, Mineralogy and Physical Geography in the Department of General Science and Literature was among the more important chairs of instruction. Each successive Catalogue of the early University made room for Geography and its subdivisions. At various times, historical geography was included in the Department of History and Science, and physical geography and meteorology appeared as requirements in the schools of Agriculture, Horticulture, Natural History, and Civil Engineering. By 1882, physiography, or ‘the study of nature’ was taught by illustrated lectures, and beginning in 1898 Teachers and others who desire[d] an introduction to the new geography were offered a 10 hours course in physiography.

3-Jan-03 Apologies for the recent state of the CAGIS web server. Our web server was cracked (successful break in over the internet) and pages changed in late November. The effort to fix the problem and restore the content has been slow as it is a spare time (unfunded) activity. And as luck would have it there are no graduate students to help this semester. I hope to have all functionality back in the next few days. Thanks for your patience.
