Teaching and Research Interests
My research over the past two decades has been concerned with the internal changes in US cities, especially in the changes that occur in response to residential mobility and migration. I have conducted both micro scale and individual studies of tenure choice, and large scale studies of demographic change in the neighborhoods of large metropolitan areas. The latter studies examine the nature of the population flows between cities and suburbs, white flight and the impact of legal intervention on the urban mosaic. I have also been particularly concerned about the relative roles of residential preferences and housing affordability in the way in which segregation has emerged in metropolitan areas. I am currently investigating the interaction of class, race and geography in metropolitan areas, as well as continuing my studies of international migration.

Click on the hypertext links below to see a group of maps that make up a portrait of the urban geography of Chicago and some of its suburbs in 1990. (For maps based on data from Census 2000, click here The maps are divided into three categories: Tract-Level Maps of Chicago and Close-In Suburbs Sample Maps at Other Levels of Analysis Neighborhood-Type Maps Maps Showing Changes between 1980 and 1990 These maps constitute a small subset of the essentially infinite number of maps that can be produced from 1990 census data at the University of Chicago Map Collection. Any phenomenon enumerated by the U.S. Census can be mapped at any scale for any part of the United States. The maps were produced from the U.S. Census Bureau's Tiger/Line Files and Summary Tape Files with Sammamish DataSystems' GeoSight FactFinder Professional software (version 4.3B). Most of the maps are choropleth maps: maps in which polygons (e.g., tracts) are divided into distinctly colored or shaded classes. In any choropleth map, the selection of class intervals, colors, and patterns can affect the map's message. Note that these maps will only display properly on terminals that can distinguish 256 colors (that is, those that can handle 8-bit color).

Program of Study The discipline of geography contributes to an understanding of society by exploring the earth's environment and its interactions with human life, by inquiring into cultures and societies from the perspective of area study, and by investigating problems of spatial organization. The Bachelor of Arts program in geography offers a distinctive focus for general education and provides a background both for advanced specialization in the discipline and for study in other fields. Solid grounding in modern geography can lead to careers in government service, environmental consulting, marketing, publishing, planning, and teaching at all levels. Program Requirements The B.A. degree in geography calls for the satisfactory completion of eleven courses, at least eight of which must be in geography. These include the orientation course (Geography 200), an introduction to maps and mapping (Geography 282), the senior seminar (Geography 298), and at least eight additional geography courses, up to three of which may be in approved related fields. A bachelor's thesis is prepared in connection with the senior seminar. Summary of Requirements Concentration Geog 200 Geog 282 additional geography courses; up to three
