Encouraging reading for pleasure is a goal of all District #204 library media centers. As a means to this end, each school promotes reading using a variety of reading incentive programs. Individual schools create, direct, and support their own reading promotions. Go to individual school LMC websites to see what programs are provided at each school.
Elementary LMCs in District #204 also provide some of the following reading incentive programs: Accelerated Reader Battle of the Books Reading Counts Rebecca Caudill Great America 600 Minutes Kane County Cougars Summer Library
Summer library is held in District #204 schools that are open for summer school. Many of our students avail themselves of this opportunity as they read their way through the summer months. Volunteer Opportunities
The LMC staff at each building actively recruits and trains many parents to assist in a variety of ways. Volunteers enable us to utilize the LMC facility to its fullest extent. It is an excellent way for parents to become involved in the educational community. Contact the LMC Director in your school if you would like to be a LMC volunteer.

ERIC Digest: ERIC Clearinghouse on Information and Technology
Libraries for the National Education Goals
Mary Alice Brennan
June 1992
T his digest is based on Libraries for the National Education Goals, by Barbara K. Stripling. By the year 2000, it is envisioned that our nation will have accomplished the six National Education Goals adopted in 1990 by the President and the governors of the United States. Since libraries are the only educational system available to everyone, regardless of age or affiliation, it is logical to turn to our nation's libraries to help to achieve these goals. To demonstrate the critical role libraries can and do play in support of the national education initiatives, an extensive literature review and analysis was undertaken (Stripling, 1992). This digest highlights the findings of that review. GOAL ONE: BY THE YEAR 2000, ALL CHILDREN IN AMERICA WILL START SCHOOL READY TO LEARN. Experts predict that fifty percent of a child's intellectual development occurs before the age of four. If this is true, then it is crucial that preschoolers receive high quality care. Both public and school libraries provide activities, services, and materials to facilitate early language acquisition and reading readiness in preschool children. Highlights:
  • The Pittsburgh Public Library's Beginning with Books project reached disadvantaged families in places around the community. They began by distributing packets to preschoolers in health clinic waiting rooms, and later expanded to social services centers, shelters, housing developments, and day care centers.

Tribune staff report Published May 24, 2002 Four years ago, The Metropolitan Planning Council, a local think-tank, examined the role technology plays in the region's growth. More effective use of technology in schools was one of several recommendations aimed at helping Illinois remain competitive in the digital age. The council followed up with a closer examination of technology in the classroom and announced its findings in a study released this month. Among the highlights:
  • State spending on learning technology has increased by less than 1 percent in the last three years.

    20. The Media Center: Why Are Media Positions Cut? How Not To Survive!
In a large illinois school district, cuts were supposed to be made at all levels, but the only cuts actually made impacted the media centers at each building.
    http://www.infotoday.com/MMSchools/may02/anderson.htm
The Media Center Why Are Media Positions Cut? How Not to Survive! by Mary Alice Anderson Lead Media Specialist, Winona Middle School, Winona, Minnesota MultiMedia Schools • May/June 2002 Let's examine practices that illustrate how not to survive. Only when we face the "fatal errors" that can be made can we get to higher ground. H ave you noticed that there are fewer media specialists than in the past?
    • In an Iowa district, full-time elementary media specialists were replaced with half-time media specialists; in other schools clerical time was reduced.
In a large Illinois school district, cuts were supposed to be made at all levels, but the only cuts actually made impacted the media centers at each building. A media specialist who left was not replaced.
In a Southern state, elementary media specialists were given additional teaching assignments such as teaching reading an hour and a half a day, yet were listed as full-time media specialists in the building.
Almost an entire district media department, including its director, was eliminated in a large Minnesota district a year ago. In another district, full-time media program paraprofessionals have replaced media specialists in all elementary schools. This spring even more media specialist positions in Minnesota are in danger because of state funding limitations and the failure of many school districts to pass operating fund initiatives.

    What's Happening? Why?
