Chair, ADJUNCT ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR JAMES THURSTON
Adjunct Professor Tina Wentzel Associate Professor Joylynn Wing; Adjunct Associate Professors Richard Sewell and Thurston Technical Director John Ervin; Visiting Guest Artist Pamela Scofield (Costume Design) The primary mission of performing arts at Colby is to promote the historical, theoretical, and experiential study of the performing arts as a viable and important area of inquiry for all liberal arts students. Performing Arts offers a major and minor in theater and dance. The department is founded on two premises: first, that performance is essential to a full understanding of the art form; second, that all the arts share significant modes of thought and expression and that a knowledge of one art form will contribute to an understanding of all the arts. In addition to traditional lecture and discussion courses, the program of study includes frequent opportunities for practical experience in the theater. The department also seeks to educate the larger community through its rigorous production schedule of plays, dance concerts, touring artists, and residency workshops with guest artists. Consistent with the College's mission, the major in performing arts is a liberal arts, not a pre-professional, major. It is, however, a major that will adequately prepare particularly interested and talented students for graduate study and further involvement with performing groups. It is a structured major, ensuring that all students have experience and training in acting, directing, movement, design, and technical production in addition to historical and theoretical study of theater and dance. The major is designed to encourage interdisciplinary study through elective courses in art, music, and dramatic literature.

Media: Paperback Publisher: Meriwether Pub Salesrank: Release Date: April, 1994 Author: Charna Halpern Del Close Kim Howard Johnson Mike Myers Customer Reviews: A manual for a new American artform! Truth in Comedy is, in someways, a companion piece to the Chicago-based school operated by two of the book's authors. The book conveys the sense of joy and wonder that comes from creating comic genius and order from audience chaos. Charna Halpern and Del Close both still teach "The Harold" at the ImprovOlympic school/theater and the book (if you're planning to read the book while taking a "Harold" class, add TWO more stars!) Instead of quick comedic games designed for one-liners and "jokey" schtick, Truth In Comedy teaches a form that strives for art. Based on a single audience suggestion a team of improvisers follows the outline of The Harold to create a play with interweaving plotlines and characters for intelligent and hilarious comedy (think of a completely improvised Seinfeld epsidoe, or Pulp Fiction.) Just one more thing: The photos in the book picture some veterans of the ImprovOlympic who are now somewhat famous in Comedy. Keep a look out for Andy Ricter (Late Night With Conan O'Brien), Adam McKay (Head Writer for Saturday Night Live), Miles Stroh (creator of 'Miles to Go'), and lots of others!

SKETCH COMEDY PRO KIM CLARK TO LAUNCH WRITING PROGRAM
A T CHICAGO CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

The new CCPA Writing Program will be an intensive program to teach students the tools for developing their individual creative voice. Designed to have a beginning and advanced track, the program will encompass comedy, drama, and many points in between. By the end of course work, students can have completed scripts ready to be sold and/or produced. Both the beginning and advance course sessions will begin June 16.
"Kim has a great reputation amongst his peers and potential students," said CCPA President Anthony Tomaska. "The new Writing Program will perfectly complement the current roster of improv, acting, and music courses that are offered at the Chicago Center, truly making us a one-stop shop for professional performing arts training."
A native of Texas, Clark, 43, has lived his adult life in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. A professional writer, occasional director, and reluctant producer, he contributes to a wide variety of television, motion picture and stage projects. Clark is also currently at work on two books - on creativity and a biography of the late Martin De Maat, long-time Second City Training Center Artistic Director.

Jonathan Browning Jonathan spent almost 10 years performing and training in Chicago. While there he was an active member of the Annoyance Theatre , the Midnight Circus Comedy Sportz and a variety of other companies. Chicago was also where he created and performed in hundreds of original pieces as well as more traditional theatre. He was also fortunate enough to teach, coach and perform improvisation in Chicago, where the artform was born. Tin Bucket was an improv showcase created for experienced teams which Jonathan and fellow SFP member, Leslie McManus, spearheaded. In Los Angeles he earned critical acclaim performing in Co-Ed Prison Sluts at Second City's Area 51 and HELLVIS at the Raven Playhouse. He also made a special appearance with Octavia Productions as Langston SuBurb, which is unheard of due to his current popularity. Jonathan currently has a national commercial running to critical acclaim - www.ilovecheese.com
