GEOGRAPHY The Indian peninsula has an area of approximately 3,287,580 sq. kilometers with the Bay of Bengal to its east, the Indian Ocean to its south and the Arabian Sea to its west. To its north lies the world's highest mountain range, The Himalayas. The country has 4 main regions: the great mountain zone, the Ganges and Indus Plains, the desert zone and the southern peninsula. India is a republic with 26 states and 4 union territories. It is the seventh largest country of the world in terms of area. India's neighbours are Myanmar and Bangladesh to its east, China, Nepal and Bhutan to the north and Afghanistan and Pakistan on the north-west. Sri Lanka lies to the the south separated by the Palk Straits. The land is very diverse and covers an area of about 3.3 million square kilometres. This large landmass encompasses several varied climatic and ecological zones. India has the highest snowbound mountain range of the world, the Himalayas to its north, the humid tropical forests on the south-west coast, the fertile Brahamaputra valley, the low mangrove swamps of the Sunderbans, the Garo Hills of Meghalaya which is the wettest spot on the universe all lying on its east, the barren marshes of the Rann of Kutch, and the Thar desert with its shifting sand dunes lies towards the west. To the north, The Himalayas stretches approximately 2400 kilometres and has the world's highest mountain peaks including Mt. Everest, Mt. K2 and Mt. Kanchenjunga. These mountains form the source of mighty rivers like Indus and Brahmaputra which flow into the Gangetic plains. These rivers cause constant erosion of the lofty mountains to build the vast alluvial plains of the Indus, Ganga and Brahamaputra. The latter two rivers form the world's largest and most fertile delta called the Brahmaputra valley before it flows out into the Bay of Bengal.

    India - Geography and Environment
Photo by Liz Clayton Because India is so large, if you were to travel across it, you would see a great many changes in the landscape: flat plains; high mountains which form part of the Himalayan mountain range; and baking hot deserts. Like the countryside, the climate in India varies a great deal from place to place. Most of the country lies in the tropics, and so stays warm throughout the year, but it is cold in the Himalayas, where snow is found on the mountain tops all year round. In many parts of India there is a rainy season between June and September, known as the Monsoon (meaning seasonal wind). The Monsoon brings very heavy rain, and in some areas flooding. However, sometimes the rain fails to arrive, causing problems across the countryside, with crops failing and land becoming very dry. Drought can be as terrible a problem as floods. 1. The parts still left of Asia are those outside the Taurus except Cilicia and Pamphylia and Lycia, I mean the parts extending from India as far as the Nile and lying between the Taurus and the outer sea on the south. After Asia one comes to Libya, which I shall describe later, but I must now begin with India, for it is the first and largest country that lies out towards the east. 2. But it is necessary for us to hear accounts of this country with indulgence, for not only is it farthest away from us, but not many of our people have seen it; and even those who have seen it, have seen only parts of it, and the greater part of what they say is from hearsay; and even what they saw they learned on a hasty passage with an army through the country. Wherefore they do not give out the same accounts of the same things, even though they have written these accounts as though their statements had been carefully confirmed. And some of them were both on the same expedition together and made their sojourns together, like those who helped Alexander to subdue Asia; yet they all frequently contradict one another. But if the differ thus about what was seen, what must we think of what they report from hearsay? 3. Moreover, most of those who have written anything about this region in much later times, and those who sail there at the present time. do not present any accurate information either. At any rate, Apollodorus, who wrote The Parthica, when he mentions the Greeks who caused Bactriana to revolt from the Syrian kings who succeeded Seleucus Nicator, says that when those kings had grown in power they also attacked India, but he reveals nothing further than what was already known, and even contradicts what was known, saving that those kings subdued more of India than the Macedonians; that Eucratidas, at any rate, held a thousand cities as his subjects. Those other writers, however, say that merely the tribes between the Hydaspes and the Hypanis were nine in number, and that they had only five thousand cities, no one of which was smaller than the Meropian Cos, and that Alexander subdued the whole of this country and gave it over to Porus.
