Pattnayak The data collected in the 2000 Census have been examined and they contain some interesting facts on Asians in America. Of the total population of about 281 million, Asians numbered about 12 million, or about 4.3 percent. Within the Asian population, Indians are the third largest group numbering about 1.9 million, after the Chinese who number about 2.7 million and the Filipinos who number about 2.4 million. For the first time the Census asked people about their ethnic mix. Of the 1.9 million Asian Indians, 1.7 million or 89 percent reported exclusively Asian Indian heritage whereas the remaining 0.2 million or 11 percent reported a mixed ethnic heritage, meaning Asian Indian plus at least one other non-Asian-Indian ancestry. Of all the major Asian groups in the United States, the Japanese are most likely to report a mixed ethnic heritage whereas the Vietnamese are least likely to report such mix. For example, over 30% of Japanese reported mixed ancestry while only about 8% of the Vietnamese reported the same. In the case of the Asian Indians, as reported above, it is 11% so the group falls in between these two extremes. The Asian Indian population in the US tends to be younger on average by about 3 years than the national population. The median age for the total US population is reported to be about 35.3 while the median age for Asian Indians is reported to be 32.5.

UMass Professor's New Book Explores Second-Generation Indian American Culture
AMHERST, Mass. - Sunaina Marr Maira, assistant professor of English and co-director of the certificate program in Asian and Asian American studies at the University of Massachusetts, explores the world of second-generation Indian Americans and how they have created a new popular culture in her recent book Desis in the House: Indian American Youth Culture in New York City (Temple University Press, March 29, 2001). Maira explains that Desis in the House explores the creation of a second-generation Indian American popular culture - based on dance parties and music mixes - that is as much a part of New York and global culture as it is of transnational South Asian public culture. Desis - a colloquial term for someone native to South Asia - draw on their ethnic traditions and New York's resources to create a vibrant subculture within which youth navigate the contradictions of gender roles and sexuality, according to Maira. Maira's interest in the experiences of second-generation Indian Americans led to her discovery that there had been very little research on the population. "I was interested in the perspectives of youth, and how young people made sense of the different cultural worlds in which they moved," she said. "At the same time that I was doing my research, in the mid-1990s, there was an explosion of a particular kind of Indian remix music and dance culture in New York."

Issues of Identity and Image for Asian/Pacific American Students
The perception of Asian/Pacific American students as the "model minority" can be detrimental because it polarizes them into two distinct groups: those students who fit into the model minority stereotype and those students who do not fit into the model minority stereotype. Oftentimes, Asian/Pacific American students are marginalized in the school systems when they do not fit into the model minority stereotype. Furthermore, the model minority stereotype does not hold validity today because of the rapid transformation of the Asian/Pacific American identity. The term "Asian/Pacific American" has multiple meanings now because it does not just include the identity of one group of people.

The Diverse Face of Business Ownership
by Ellen Alcorn
Monster Contributing Writer
Summary
  • Small-business owners increasingly reflect workforce diversity.
  • Hispanics/Latinos and African Americans are underrepresented.
  • Asian Americans have enjoyed the most success to date.
More than ever, small-business ownership is beginning to mirror the US workforce's diversity more accurately. According to a recent study by the Small Business Administration (SBA), people of color now own 15 percent of this country's small businesses twice as many as in 1982. "This study really shows there is a great potential for people of color to join the mainstream of the American business community," says Ying Lowrey, the study's author. Among the report's significant findings:
    • The minority-owned businesses most likely to survive are those in the service industries. The likeliest reason for this, says Lowrey, is that startup costs tend to be lower than those of goods-producing industries.
    • African Americans and Hispanics are underrepresented in the small-business population. Hispanics/Latinos make up approximately 12 percent of the population but own less than 6 percent of US businesses. And African Americans, who are also at about 12 percent of the population, own less than 4 percent of businesses.

    http://ragz-international.com/asian_americans.htm
ASIAN AMERICANS The success story of the 80s has been the catchphrase used in the media to describe certain groups of Asian Americansespecially the American-born children of emigrants from China, Japan, and Korea. While the media focus was usually on the outstanding success in school or business of these Asian Americans, their remarkable achievements were often matched by young Asian immigrants for whom English was a second language. Part of the success story has been the old-world ethics of their parents, who often left their Asian homes without any material possessions and who had to work hard to achieve their goals. Beyond their common struggles for success in an alien world, the various Asian American ethnic groups should not be lumped together as if they were homogeneous. Their cultures are distinct, and each of these ethnic groups came to the United States under widely varying circumstances. Asian Americans vary as much as Norwegians differ from Spaniards or the English from the French and Italians, though all are Europeans. The term is broad enough to include people from all of what was Soviet Central Asia (including Russia east of the Ural Mountains, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan), as well as citizens of the Indian subcontinent (including India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh), Thailand, China, Japan, Korea, Indochina, the Philippines, Indonesia, and some Pacific islands (mainly the Hawaiian islands, Samoa, and Guam).

A change of supreme importance has now come over the world scene, and that is the renascence of Asia. Perhaps, when the history of our times comes to be written, this re-entry of this old continent of Asia-which has seen so many ups and downs-into world polit ics, will be the most outstanding fact of this and the next generation. Jawaharlal Nehru, to an overflow crowd at the Greek Theatre on the University of California, Berkeley campus, 1949 At the time of the Thind decision some immigrants became discouraged with conditions in the United States and returned to India. But many remained and found ways to progress in spite of the many legal and social obstacles of the time. Organizations across the country campaigned for Indian independence and for citizenship for Indians in the United States. The Gadar Party pressed for the independence of India. The Home Rule League, led by Lajput Rai until his death in 1928, campaigned for dominion status. The India Association lobbied vigorously for citizenship. Mubarak Ali Khan, a prosperous Arizona farmer who founded the Indian Welfare League in 1937, worked to build bridges to the people within the American political structure who could influence a decision in favor of citizenship for Indians.2 Sardar Jagjit Singh, a successful New York businessman, fought for independence Time magazine to write in support of Indian independence, and lobbied congressmen and diplomats. These combined efforts eventually yielded success. In 1946 the United States Congress passed the Luce-Celler Act, eliminating the ban on Indian immigration and allowing Indians to become naturalized citizens.

Indian American Community - A Story of Achievements
T he Indian American community in the United States is over a million strong In 1960, estimates showed only five thousand Indians in the United States, but by 1970, this population had grown to approximately three hundred and fifty thousand. The 1990 U.S. Census records the number of Indian-Americans at 815, 447, and between the 1980 and 1990 Census, the annual growth rate of the community was 8.5 percent . According to the estimate of the Population Reference Bureau, the Indian American population has grown by 103% in 1980-90, a growth rate second only to the Chinese among Asian American ethnic groups, and by 55% in 1990-97, second only to the Vietnamese. As a result the Indian American population numbered 1.215m in 1997, making it the third largest Asian American ethnic group in the US, after the Chinese and the Filipino Americans, outstripping the Japanese. Certainly, the Indian American community in the United States has experienced a remarkable transformation from its modest beginnings. The Census Bureau margin of error, an estimated 15,000 uncounted Indian-Americans, is consistent with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Services estimate that the number of undocumented resident immigrants from India in October 1988 was around 15,000. Furthermore, according to INS estimates, the number of undocumented Indian-American immigrants in 1992 had grown to about 28,000. Most of these undocumented Indian immigrations are people who were supposed to visit the United States only for a specific period of time, but then decided to remain indefinitely. The largest portion of these immigrants reside in the states of California, New York, New Jersey, Texas, Florida and Illinois in that order.

Site coverage: contemporary music by Asian Americans (and Asian Canadians)... also contemporary music influenced by Asia.
As a collector of Asian American recordings (lp's, cassettes, cd's) I had the opportunity to play some of this music on my Asian American radio show, "Gold Mountain." For many years, the magazine-like program aired on WPFW 89.3 FM, the DC community station owned by Pacifica. ( In recent years, Pacifica station programming and the national management structure has experienced much turmoil. For more info. check Save Pacifica and Current public broadcasting news.) Eventually I hope to explore the notions of Asian American music what it might be, whether there is a viable "Asian American aesthetic", and how it fits into the musical categories one runs into. Note that some of the music I've reviewed might be considered "Asian" as opposed to "Asian American", but don't let that hinder your appreciation of the music.
