Purdue's School of Medicine
Winthrop E. Stone, Purdue President 1900-1921
The Purdue School of Medicine was a short-lived educational anomaly of the Stone administration. Purdue had no ambitions in medical education and probably had never considered such a possibility, at least not officially. But in 1905, the Medical College of Indiana at Indianapolis, a private school, made overtures to Purdue, proposing to turn over to Purdue its property and assets in Indianapolis, its goodwill, and the services of its faculty to establish a high-order medical school under Purdue (i.e., state) auspices. Until 1905, medical education in Indiana was carried on by several private medical schools. The medical community believed that the merger of some of the small private schools with one of the state schools would advance not only the interests of medicine but also public health. Earlier negotiations by the Indianapolis school with Indiana University had failed. Stone , however, made certain that Purdue would not be intruding upon IU's interests, then took the proposal to the board of trustees. In September, 1905, board action established the Indiana Medical College, the School of Medicine of Purdue University. The plan was, of course, subject to legislative approval. Simultaneously, two other private medical schools, the Central College of Physicians and Surgeons, also at Indianapolis, and the Fort Wayne College of Medicine, arranged a similar union with Purdue.

Contact Us The Professional Educator Model The IUK Teacher Education Program is based upon the Professional Educator Model that was created and designed using standards from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC), the Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB), and other current teacher education documents and best practices in the belief that the prospective teacher education candidate develops, over time, from a novice to a skilled educator. The successful teacher must master both a body of content knowledge and effective teaching skills. For beginning students, the IUK Core Curriculum Requirement and general education requirements form the academic foundation in the various disciplines. The Pre-Professional requirements in the Division of Education both explore the profession and set the foundation for further education classes. Students experience a wide range of coursework and field experiences early in their program. Student progress is monitored in the areas of knowledge, skills, and dispositions. At the point of admission into the Teacher Education Program (TEP), remaining courses in general education are meshed with professional education classes each semester prior to student teaching. Each of these semesters requires professional classes with specific field assignments. Thus, there are continual opportunities to connect theory with practice. In addition, courses are sequenced so that a variety of instructional strategies are assigned in partnership with different school sites. The monitoring of student progress in the areas of knowledge, skills, and dispositions becomes more complex. For example, classroom teachers and IUK faculty collaborate in practicum reviews. In addition, each teacher candidate participates in his/her evaluation by creating and enhancing a Teacher Portfolio.
