It is bordered by Lake Michigan and the state of Michigan (N), Ohio (E), Kentucky, across the Ohio R. (S), and Illinois (W). Northern Indiana is a glaciated lake area, separated by the Wabash River from the central agricultural plain, which is rich with deep glacial drift. The southern portion of the state is a succession of bottomlands interspersed with knolls and ridges, gorges and valleys. Limestone caves, such as the big Wyandotte Cave, and mineral springs, as at French Lick and West Baden Springs, are found there. The unglaciated soil is shallow in S Indiana, and the cutting of timber has caused erosion, but there is still extensive farming. The capital and largest city is Indianapolis, in the central part of the state. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, with a 3-mi (4.8-km) frontage on Lake Michigan, is noted for its beautiful shifting sand dunes. Formerly a state park, the area was made a National Lakeshore in 1966. Four years earlier, in 1962, the U.S. Congress authorized the establishment of the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in S Indiana. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the site of the famous 500-mi (800-km) auto race, held annually.

Rural Indiana Profile This report describes patterns of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use in rural Indiana, and their impact on economic and social trends. Indiana's geography, population, and agency structure are essential to understanding how substance abuse affects the people of rural Indiana, and how rural communities can cope with these challenges. Rural Indiana. Thirty-five percent of Indiana's 5.8 million residents live in rural areas. Rural Hoosiers have a strong history of self-determination, with an emphasis on local governance. Indiana remains a largely agricultural state; farms account for 68 percent of the land. However, since World War II, the state has seen considerable growth in business and industry; several major corporations are located in rural Indiana, including Hillenbrand Industries, Arvin Industries, Kimball International, Inc. and Cummins Engine Company. These corporations are often the employment alternatives for rural residents who do not farm, and provide employee assistance programs and other health benefits not available to farm workers or small business employees. In rural Indiana, large corporations employ a significant portion of the local population. For instance, in Bartholomew County, two corporations employ 54 percent of the residents. On average, rural residents are within a 45 minute drive of a mid-sized city in Indiana or a neighboring state. However, public transportation does not reach most areas, leaving them isolated from centrally located health care providers which often serve multiple counties. Rural counties have diverse needs which may not be met through simple replication of strategies designed for urban substance abuse problems.

The mansion is made up of hundreds of thousands of bricks. It may take two hundred bricks to make the ledge below the bedroom windows; and another six hundred bricks to make the facade leading to the north patio. The bricks become the building blocks that make up the mansion. The U.S. Census Bureau builds geographic data from small building blocks that it calls "census blocks." These census blocks are small geographic areas that might include 20 to 60 households. It might take several census blocks to make a neighborhood. Seven neighborhoods might make up a city council district. Six city council districts might make up a small sized city. By adding the population and housing data from each census block in a neighborhood, you get the population and housing data for the neighborhood.
