    Culture
Social and religious duty has, over time, been refined to form a code of behaviour called adat or traditional law. Islam is the predominant religion of the archipelago but it's somewhat tempered by elements of Hindu-Buddhism, adat and animism. In Java, especially, there are hundreds of places where spiritual energy is thought to be concentrated and can be absorbed by followers. Despite a lengthy colonial period, missionaries were only successful in converting small pockets of the Indonesian population to Christianity - the Bataks of Sumatra, the Toraks of Sulawesi and 95% of the population of Flores being notable examples. Over 300 languages are spoken in the archipelago and most belong to the Malay-Polynesian group. Within this group, many regional languages and dialects are spoken. The lingua franca of the archipelago is Bahasa Indonesia, which is almost identical to Malay. It uses a number of foreign words, indicating the long history of contact Indonesia has had with other cultures. In recent years, Bahasa Indonesia has been appropriated by teenagers into a new and trendy vernacular called Bahasa Prokem; it has proved mostly unintelligible to the older generation. Batik, the art of applying wax to cloth and then tie-dying in colourful and dramatic designs, is produced throughout Indonesia, and the centre of this activity is Yogyakarta in Java. Other craft forms include:

Anthropological and Archaeological researches have proved that Java island has the oldest anthropomorphic remains such as Pithecanthropus Erectus, and Homo-Soloensis. Homo-Soloensis is considered the same stock as Homo-Neanderthal in Israel. Physical characteristics show a close relation with the ancestors of Australian Aborigines found in Talgai, Darling town NSW, and Keilor, near Melbourne.

    Keris
In the old days, tribes would collect the skulls of the enemies they had beheaded to prove their prowess. For the same purpose, agrarian communities would collect the horns of buffaloes they had slaughtered and the Javanese would only feel contented if, apart from owning a big house and a horse, they could own a keris (Javanese dagger). The legend of Mpu Gandring, the master blacksmith murdered with the kris he forged himself by King Ken Arok, who had ordered the dagger from him, dates back about five centuries. Though he was not the first kris-maker, this story has persisted for centuries. Its mystery is intriguing and has prompted widespread speculation over the years. No records and convincing evidence have yet indicated when krises were first wrought. While the Rukam inscription (829 Caka/907 AD) makes some reference to the word kris, this Javanese weapon is likely to have been recognized even earlier. The contents of Rukam and several other inscriptions mention the symbolic role of krises in ritual offerings to the gods, while the legend of Mpu Gandring's tragic death affirms the function of the kris as a weapon as well as a sanctified heirloom with magical powers. Krises became intimate in the daily life of the Javanese (as governor general Raffles once put it, "Javanese males without krises are like nude men") and assumed a variety of different functions.

Karaton YOGYAKARTA It is located in the center of the city of Yogyakarta or just Yogya as the local people call it. Karaton means a place where the Ratu-king lives, other word is Kedaton , with the same meaning. In the Javanese teachings, it has a deep philosophical meaning. The architect designer of this palace was Sultan Hamengkubuwono I himself, who was also the founder of the kingdom of NGAYOGYAKARTA HADININGRAT . His skill in architecture was appreciated by the dutch scientist - DR. Pigeund and DR. Adam who adored him as " the architect of his brother-Pakubuwono II of Surakarta". The first king moved to his huge and magnificent Karaton on October 7, 1756. Although there are some European style of some parts of the building, structurally this is the vivid example of Javanese palace architecture. The 14.000 sq. m of the Karaton Yogya has deep philosophical meaning with all its building, courts, carving, trees, and location. This is a Karaton full of significant symbols of human life. Usually visitors are coming from MALIOBORO STREET , southward through the Alun-alun (north square). In order to understand perfectly well the symbolic meaning of the Karaton, one should walk from south to north. Start from Krapyak, a village of about 3 km south of Karaton.
