Indonesia - Culture There are ways of life among the islands of Indonesia that could be 5,000 years apart. Compare the mountain tribes of Irian Jaya and the jungle nomads in Kalimantan to the sophisticated Javan yuppy with his state of the art mobile phone. Each island has it's own customs and culture, and some contain many different cultures. Still, 'adat', the Indonesian word for common law, referring to a custom which has always been followed but whose origins cannot be traced, is the social mechanism by which many an argument or personal inequity is solved.
Indonesian textiles are some of the finest in the world, and differing islands have their own styles of weaving and dyeing. The ancient art of batik, resist dyeing using wax, is traditional in many islands, each of which has it's own preferred patterns.

Prehistory
Java was one of the earliest places where human beings lived. In 1891 the fossil skull of Java Man (Homo erectus) was discovered in Central Java. This erect near-man lived at a time when Europe was under ice and most of Indonesia was part of Asia. The species ranged from Africa all the way north to the glacial border of Europe and east to China, thriving some 500 000 years ago at the very beginning of the Pleistocene epoch. Charcoal and charred bones indicate these people used fire. Homo erectus was not an ancestor of present-day Indonesians but a vanished race in its own right.
Excavations at Sangiran in Central Java uncovered an even more primitive type. Then, in 1931, 11 skullcaps were found at Ngandong, belonging to a more advanced race than Homo erectus - the so called Solo Man. All 11 skullcaps has been deliberately cracked open: it is assumed Solo Man was a brain-eating cannibal. Found with the busted skulls was an astonishingly rich fossil bed of 23 000 mammalian bones, mostly of extinct oxen, elephants, and hippos. Also uncovered were scrapers, borers, chopers, and stone balls for use in slings.

... eastjava.com Indonesia is rich in art and culture which are intertwined with religion and age-old traditions from the time of early migrants with Western thoughts brought by Portuguese traders and Dutch colonists. The basic principles which guide life include the concepts of mutual assistance or "gotong royong" and consultations or "musyawarah" to arrive at a consensus or "mufakat" Derived from rural life, this system is still very much in use in community life throughout the country. Though the legal system is based on the old Dutch penal code, social life as well as the rites of passage are founded on customary or "adat" law which differs from area to area.
"Adat" law has a binding impact on Indonesian life and it may be concluded that this law has been instrumental in maintaining equal rights for women in the community. Religious influences on the community are variously evident from island to island. Unlike some countries art forms in Indonesia are not only based on folklore, as many were developed in the courts of former kingdoms such as in Bali, where they are part of religious ceremonies. The famous dance dramas of Java and Bali are derived from Hindu mythology and often feature fragments from the Ramayana and Mahabharata Hindu epics.

INDONESIAN CULTURE
Indonesia is blessed with a rich and diverse mix of traditional cultures and art forms. The basic principles which guide life across this colorful tapestry of life-styles include the concepts of mutual assistance or 'gotong royong' and communal meetings and gatherings or 'musyawarah' to arrive at a consensus or 'mufakat'. Derived from the traditions of agriculturally based rural life, this system is still very much in use in community life throughout the country. Social life, as well as rites of passage, are stepped in ancient traditions and customs, or 'adat' laws, which differ from area to area. 'Adat' laws have a binding impact on Indonesian life and have been instrumental in maintaining equal rights for women in the community. Religious influences on communal life vary from island to island and village to village, depending on local history. Art forms in Indonesia are not only derived from folklore, as in many other parts of the world. Many were developed in the courts of former kingdoms, as in Bali, where they are integral elements of religious ceremonies. We only focused on five tribes that have unique culture and haven't published worldwide. They are Asmatnese, Naganese, Mandailing, Minahasa, and Sasaknese. Some other tribes described in architecture pages.

Perhaps the most famous is the tradition of shadow puppet plays in which the wooden puppets of West Java - wayang golek - and the highly decorated leather puppets of Yogyakarta - wayang kulit - are used to portray gods, heroes and villains in literary epics that can last for many hours.
Also indigenous to the islands of Indonesia is the music of the gamelan , now hugely popular in the West, particularly since it was used to such haunting effect in the film "A year of Living Dangerously"

The Columbia Chronologies of Asian History And Culture , edited by John S. Bowman offers an overview of political history, arts, culture, thought and religion, science and technology, economics and everyday life of all Asian countries from the Paleolithic era through 1998. The more than 30 Asian countries are individually analyzed on 580 pages. According to its political, military, economic and demographic weight, a state gets more or less space. China is treated on 115, Japan on 75 and India on 120 pages. The almost 100 pages of appendices contain information on National and Independence days, scientific-technological achievements in Asia and a chronological comparative overview of what happened in Asia and Europe at a given time. The detailed index takes another 70 pages. To make a long story short, this is the most comprehensive Asian history available. The only, but crucial thing missing in this reference work is a bibliography which would allow a reader to dig further on a specific issue.
Let's take the entry on Indonesia as an example. Its story is summarized on 15 pages. The description begins with the Pleistocene epoch (approximately 1,8 million to 8 thousand B.C.). Early evidence (2000 B.C.- A.D. 500), early Kingdoms (500-1377) and the rise of the Islamic kingdoms (1290-1682) are the subsequent parts of the entry. The European presence in Indonesia takes a bit more than four pages. In 1511, Portuguese explorers captured the port of Malacca, erected a fort there and settled in, but Portuguese corruption and disorganization soon led to the loss of the sea-trade control of Malacca and to the rise of Sumatran maritime trade centers. In 1595-98, the first expeditions to the East Indies by competing Dutch trade companies took place. In 1602, the Dutch East India Company was formed with a merger of the competing companies. England also entered the spice trade. In 1605, the Dutch East India Company occupied Ambon and established its headquarters.
