Country Flag ... Travel Warning History The first settlers in the Indonesian Archipelago was believed to be that of the "Java Man", found in east Java. The "Malays" from southern China and Indochina later began populating the archipelago around 3000BC. Indonesia is very much influenced by the cultures it encountered throughout its history. Powerful groups such as the Buddhist Srivijaya empire and the Hindu Mataram kingdom had arisen in Java and Sumatra towards the end of the 7th century. The last great Hindu kingdom was the Majapahit, which was founded in the 13th century. The subsequent spread of Islam into the archipelago in the 14th century forced the Majapahit's to retreat to Bali, which is one of the few islands which remained Hindu and preserved to this day. By the 15th century, a strong Muslim empire had developed and most people in Indonesia today practice Islam.

... BudgetBali Old Version Balinese Culture The culture of Bali is unique. People say that the Balinese people have reached self-content. It is not an exaggeration that when a Balinese is asked what heaven is like, he would say, just like Bali, without the worries of mundane life. They want to live in Bali, to be cremated in Bali when they die, and to reincarnate in Bali. It does not mean that the Balinese resist changes. Instead, they adapt them to their own system. This goes back far in history. Prior to the arrival of Hinduism in Bali and in other parts of Indonesia, people practised animism. When Hinduism arrives, the practice of Hinduism is adapted to local practices. The brand of Hinduism practised in Bali is much different from that in India. Other aspects of life flow this way. Traditional paintings , faithfully depicting religious and mythological symbolisms, met with Western and modern paintings, giving birth to contemporary paintings, free in its creative topics yet strongly and distinctively Balinese. Its dance, its music, and its wayang theaters , while have been continually enriched by contemporary and external artistry, are still laden with religious connotations, performed mostly to appease and to please the gods and the goddesses. Wood and stone carvings, gold and silver crafts parallel the development of paintings, gracefully evolving with external forces to enhance their characters.

http://www.geocities.com/Athens/5738/artculture.htm
Introduction Until 14th century, Moslem preachers who had come to Indonesia, especially in the island of Java, could not convert many people. Only some of the educated, the merchants, and the nobles were interested to embrace the new religion. This stagnancy ended in the 15th century when a council of Sufi saints, Walisongo, started to propagate Islam in the island of Java. The Walisongo and other Sufi Saints who lived after them used persuasive strategies and Sufistic approach to win the heart of the Javanese people. Most of the Javanese were very fond of art, so the Walisongo inserted Islamic teachings in the already famous Hindu epic of Bharatayuda and Ramayana to be shown in the wayang (shadow puppet) performances. Sufi symbols were hidden in the stories, on the characters, and on the shape of the puppets. They also converted old and created new stories, poems and songs which had Islamic teaching but used local names and languages. They included local myths and folklores with Islamic concepts and names. They combined the Islamic Hijri calendar with the Javanese Saka calendar. They put many Arabic verbs and nouns in the Javanese vocabulary. They changed local ceremonies into Islamic festivals and invented sport games and child's plays with Islamic teachings, even traditional food and cakes with Sufi symbols. This strategy was very successful in converting almost all of Java into Islam in about a century.

Traditional or spiritual values from many tribes are reflected in the colors, forms and typical crafts from certain regions which display various meanings related to the ethnic or particular region of origin. Woven cloth is found all over the country, with different motifs, patterns and colors according to their respective region. The noted songket and ikat weaving are made in Sumbawa, Flores, Kalimantan, South Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bali and East Timor. The batik process of waxing and dyeing originated in Java centuries ago and classic designs have been modified with modern trends in both pattern and technology. There are several centers of Batik in Java, the major ones being Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Pekalongan and Cirebon. Batik is also being produced in some other areas as in Bali where local designs are incorporated. Other provinces produce hand-woven cloths of gold and silver threads, silks or cottons with intricate designs.

Indonesië heeft special mijn belangstelling o.a. door de correspondentie die ik heb gehad met inwoners van dit land. ABOUT INDONESIA > ART AND CULTURE
Indonesia is rich in art and culture which are intertwined with religion and age-old traditions from the time of early migrants to the Western thoughts brought by Portuguese traders and Dutch colonialists. The basic principles which guided life include the concepts of "gotong royong" (mutual assistance) and "musyawarah" (deliberations) to arrive at a "mufakat" (consensus). Derived from rural way of life, this system is still very much in use in community life throughout the country. Though the legal system is based on the Dutch penal code, social life as well as the rites of passage are founded on customary or "adat law" which differ from area to area. "Adat law" has a binding impact on Indonesian life and it may be concluded that this law has been instrumental in maintaining equal rights for women in the community. Religious influences on the community are evident from island to island. Unlike some other countries, art-forms in Indonesia are not only based on folklore. Many were developed in the courts of former kingdoms and, as in Bali, are part of religious ceremonies.
