When master carpenter Perry Wilson showed his friend's son how to build a tree house, he discovered that he was really teaching the child the value of mathematics. The task brought to mind his own struggles with a learning disability and the failure of his school to help him realize his potential. As a result, Wilson quit his job and established If I Had a Hammer, a program that uses alternative methods, specifically the construction of a small house, to show kids how to put the material they are learning in school to work.

IMPULSE: The Integrated Math Physics, Undergraduate Laboratory Science, and Engineering Program
Professor Nick Pendergrass
In September 1998, we began an integrated, first-year engineering curriculum. Assessment data showed a major impact on attrition rate, students passing two semesters of physics and calculus on schedule, and increased student performance on common final exams in calculus.
"Integrationthe fact that students are learning in a cross-disciplinary wayis a key goal. So when they're doing math, they're also doing physics. They realize that these subjects somehow connect to each other...Technology is a part of it; the teaming and the active learning are very important."
Professor John Dowd
Introduction

Here we describe the IMPULSE program, what it is doing with technology and why. We briefly present information about student learning outcomes, and explain why it's not just the technology that has made this a successful program.
The Setting
In this section, we introduce you to the IMPULSE faculty and provide information necessary to understand the context within which they strive to achieve their goals for student learning.
Learning Problems and Goals
Here we examine, first, the learning problems that the IMPUSE faculty faced, problems that ultimately motivated them to change their curriculums; then, we take a look at the goals they have set for student learning.

The Curriculum at Lower Primary Our students thrive on the rich and engaging curriculum that we have developed at Lower Primary . Their study of curriculum basics such as Language Arts and Math is enriched by our wide variety of other subjects including Religion, Chinese Studies, Art and PE. Please select a topic from the list below: Language Arts Math Science and Social Studies Chinese Studies ... Counseling/Guidance Language Arts A Balanced Literacy Program is the basis for our language arts program. There are many instructional components to the Program: oral language, word study, four kinds of reading and four kinds of writing. The reading elements are reading aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading. The writing aspects include shared writing, interactive writing, guided writing or writing workshop, and independent writing. These components are interconnected and not meant to be used sequentially. Teachers carefully assess the needs of the children they are teaching and then select when and how to use the different componets so that they provide the best opportunities for learning. Math HKIS has adopted the Math Standards supported by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (US) and use these standards as the basis for our instruction. Key ideas from these standards include:

Activities that Integrate Math and Science (Project AIMS)
AIMS began in 1981 as a project funded by the National Science Foundation at Fresno Pacific College. Eighty classroom teachers and the faculty explored the effectiveness of integrating mathematics and science in grades 5-8. The initial AIMS materials produced such positive results that a major curriculum research and development effort was launched to fill this void. The early success of AIMS in grades 5-9 quickly caught the attention of K-4 teachers and created a widespread demand for similarly integrated materials for their use. In response, AIMS was established as a permanent program to develop integrated math/science materials for K-9.

VIGRE INTEGRATED WORKING GROUPS
Fall, 2002

As their name implies, Integrated Working Groups are comprised of faculty, postdocs, graduate students (and possibly undergrads) working together in a common area.
Several such groups are planned to run in Fall, 2002. All interested students, postdocs and senior faculty including those not supported from the VIGRE grant are most welcome to participate in these activities!
VIGRE-supported Graduate Students should note that participation in such a group can fulfill the first year Apprenticeship requirement and possibly the advanced year requirement as well.
The following paragraphs describe the plans for the working groups, as well as the pre-requisites they presume. If you are interested in taking part in one of them, please contact the organizer.
WORKING GROUP IN MATHEMATICAL FLUID DYNAMICS: BOUNDS ON FLOW QUANTITIES
Scientific scope: In depth discussion of methods for deriving mathematically rigorous estimates of physically relevant quantites for turbulent fluid flows in incompressible Newtonian fluids. Mathematical methods include techniques from functional analysis, differential equations, asymptotic analysis, and computational and numerical analysis. Structure and goals: The group meets in a well-boarded classroom 5-7pm one day (probably Wednesday) every week or two. One participant makes a (chalk) presentation of a current problem in the active research area of bounds on flow quantities, with all details and background as requested by the other participants. A participant may lead successive meetings until everyone agrees to change topics. This is not just a research seminar, but rather a more pedagogical forum to teach each other about what we can do, what we might want to do, and figure out how we might help each other perform research in this area.

integrated math 2.0. integrated Science 2. They develop observation skills, collect data, and draw conclusions from their science activities.
http://www.ims.issaquah.wednet.edu/math-sci.htm
6th Grade Math/Science
This block math and science class integrates math and science as much as possible. The math curriculum builds on elementary math skills. Students study number sense, algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, measurement, and patterns. They are introduced to new concepts and more advanced skills used in higher-level math courses. The science curriculum introduces students to basic concepts in physical science, earth science, and life science. Both classes provide a foundation which students build on as they proceed through middle school.
6th Grade Compacted Math/Science
This block class is a choice for entering sixth grade students who are strong in math. Students are admitted based on previous grades, tests, teacher recommendation, and district and IMS math assessments. The class covers the regular Science program. In Math, students rapidly cover the concepts in the regular sixth grade course as well as those taught in Pre-Integrated 1. Through a spiral approach, students cover equations, graphing, fractions, decimals, number theory, two- and three-dimensional geometry, integers, ratios, percents and proportions, and statistics. The strands of algebra, problem solving, communication, measurement, applications to the real world, logic, and reasoning are incorporated into the curriculum.
Pre-Integrated Math 1
This class reinforces and extends the basic concepts taught the previous year, i.e., fractions and decimals, with extensions to percent, ratio, rate, and proportion. It covers geometry, including construction, area, volume, and surface area. Problem solving threads throughout the year, including thinking surfaces and communication, both verbal and in writing, using algorithms and written explanation. The class also focuses on statistics, probability, and an introduction to integers. Determining pattern graphing and writing equations are introduced.
