Lesson Plans for: "You Are What You Eat: An Interdisciplinary Unit on Nutrition" Julie Miyahira Appropriate for 4 th and 5 th Graders Each health period: 30-45 minutes Day 1 Start off the health period by introducing the new unit- nutrition. Have the students brain storm in their table groups answers to the questions, "What does the word ‘nutrition’ mean to you? What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘nutrition’?" Have a class discussion on various answers to the questions. Incorporate these answers into your explanation of what will be covered over the next 8 days. The food groups, the food pyramid, and balanced meals are a few of the general topics that will be covered in the unit. You will get the students to start thinking about their own eating habits by having them draw and write about what they ate yesterday (Journal 1). A few of them can share with the class what they ate the previous day. For homework, have the students fill out the "What’s in the Cupboard?" worksheet. This worksheet requires the students to list at least a dozen things in their cupboard or refrigerator at home. By setting a minimum number of 12 items students who may not have a lot of food in their house will be able to meet the requirement while those who may have more food can feel free to list more. In addition, a few spaces will be available for the students to write in any ethnic foods they have in their homes. This will hopefully prevent students from various ethnic backgrounds from being apprehensive about listing foods that their classmates may find very unusual.
