ITC's “Lega Carta” helps countries update their international legal framework. ITC's Lega Carta
From amongst the more than 40,000 existing international treaties, a few hundred are crucial for regulating international trade and creating common ground for the flow of goods and services.
A considerable number of different organizations are involved in creating these international instruments. “Lega Carta” is a system, developed by ITC, that analyses a particular country's situation with regard to major commercial treaties and other arrangements. Each instrument is calibrated at a certain value. The result gives a clear picture of where a country and its business community stand and provides recommendations as to what international instruments should be either ratified or enforced, by order of priority, depending on the country's economic and geographic positioning. The following are the subjects covered by Lega Carta:
  • Banks, payments and insolvency

International Trade Rules: What Every Exporter Should Know
by Jean-François Bourque On average, almost everyone has witnessed the birth of two nations each year of his or her existence. So, if you are 50 years old, then about 100 new countries will have been created since your birth. Membership of the United Nations (UN) grew from 51 original members in 1945 (there were 74 nation-states at that time) to 191 in 2002. The magnitude of this process is unprecedented. Now think what this means in terms of business laws: 191 or more countries equals the same number of legal systems. (Page 4 : 1422 words) Read more . . .
    Learning to Use Model Contracts
The need for easy-to-use model contracts will continue to grow as more and more businesses — without the means to consult specialist lawyers — negotiate and draft international trade agreements themselves. The following four articles focus on a new generation of model contracts, where to find them and how to use them. The International Chamber of Commerce and ITC have created model contracts and provide advice and know-how to help companies deal with the legal aspects of doing business internationally. Model contracts from these organizations are now available for international sales of manufactured goods and perishable items, for different types of agreements with intermediaries and for joint ventures.

International Law and the UN International law did not begin with the United Nations, but the Organization has played an important role in consolidating and vastly expanding it.
Many parts of the UN are at work in developing International Law. UNCITRAL
    in Vienna
The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) was established by the General Assembly in 1966 and is based in Vienna. The General Assembly gave UNCITRAL the general mandate to further the progressive harmonization and unification of the law of international trade. Their work is to develop uniform international norms and standards in International Trade law. International law helps regulate relations between countries. These relations include trading, exports and imports and movements of goods across boundaries. The United Nations, through the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) facilitates world trade by developing Conventions, model laws, rules and legal guides, designed to harmonize international trade. UNCITRAL has helped to develop some of the most fundamental treaties regulating international trade.
In the last years, UNCITRAL mainly focused on electronic Commerce. In 1996, the General Assembly adopted the UNCITRAL Model Law on electronic Commerce and in 2001 UNCITRAL developed a Model Law on Electronic Signatures.
