  • 100 Distinguished European Chemists from the Chemical Revolution to the 21st Century
The Federation of European Chemical Societies initiated, as a Millennium Project, the celebration of Distinguished European Chemists spanning a period of over two hundred years. Member societies and individuals were invited to submit their nominations of distinguished European chemists from the end of the 18th century until the present day. In addition to Nobel Prize winners, there were nominations of many others from Europe who have, over more than two centuries, transformed the science and influenced science, industry or society worldwide.

In addition to the explosively growing cellular phone industry, other wireless devices such as global positioning satellite (GPS) units, radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags, wireless local area network (WLAN) cards are also rapidly diffusing through our everyday lives, evolving from luxury items to essential commodities. This growth is likely to continue with no slower pace until realization of ubiquitous wireless network. This relentless pace of growth and diversification of the wireless market has continuously motivated new researches in silicon-based RF integrated circuit (IC) design. RF ICs in wireless transceivers have proved to be design bottlenecks in today's complex, high-performance wireless communication systems. The need for robust performance and low cost has resulted in a great thrust towards system-on-a-chip implementation. In this presentation, I will talk about the recent advances and future direction in silicon-based RF ICs. Design challenges and possible solutions in implementing a single-chip-radio in the high-frequency silicon environment will be discussed. Special attention will be paid to our current research projects, that is, soliton/pulse-based integrated circuits for ultra wide band (UWB) wireless communication, distributed IC design techniques, oscillator linewidth self-narrowing, and stochastic resonance electronics.

Inventors Recording and collecting the work of inventors has long been a mission of the Smithsonian. The Lemelson Center of the National Museum of American History documents, interprets, and disseminates information about invention and innovation, and fosters an appreciation for the central role invention and innovation play in the history of the United States. The explores the invention, history, science, and technology of aviation and space flight. The Anacostia Museum has a special exhibit: The Real McCoy, African-American Invention and Innovation, 1619-1930 and the Remembering Gallery's exhibit: American Inventors and Inventions . Here we examine a handful of famous Amercan inventors, some like Benjamin Franklin, who are well known for their creations, others such as Thomas Jefferson, who are better known for other contributions.

The adage "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise" certainly worked for Benjamin Franklin. In addition to being a printer, statesman, scientist, philosopher, and inventor, Franklin has become a widely respected symbol of American ingenuity and industry. While some of Franklin's inventions are now little known, many, such as the lightning rod, bifocal glasses, and his common-sense aphorisms, are still in use today.
