In addition to higher energy bills, home buyers will be less comfortable in homes not built to MEC standards than ones that are. A major byproduct when corn is distilled into ethanol is an animal feed called distiller's grain, which is high in phosphorous and sulfur, both of which pass through a pig's digestive system. Too much phosphorous in manure causes problems if it's not handled properly and runs off into waterways. Studies show too much phosphorous is harmful to lakes and streams, where it promotes algae growth. Sulfur is a key component of manure smell, and preliminary studies show a slight trend toward increased odor when pigs are fed distiller's grain, said
