Technical Area: Efficiency/Information Transfer Background and Significance: This disregard for MEC may save home buyers a few dollars on the purchase price of their homes, but these savings disappear quickly through higher energy bills. In addition to higher energy bills, home buyers will be less comfortable in homes not built to MEC standards than ones that are. Project Objectives:
  • Increase adoption and enforcement of Model Energy Code by Iowa cities Increase code compliance for publicly funded/financed new housing in the state Train builders on how to cost-effectively build to MEC standards while encouraging them to build beyond the standards
Under these broad project objectives a number of activities are being carried out. They are discussed below.

April 22, 2002 SCIENTISTS WORK TO TAKE STINK FROM HOGS
This article appeared in the Des Moines Register April 22, 2002. It is reprinted here with grateful permission of the author, David Elbert, and to the Des Moines Register By DAVID ELBERT

Animal nutrition research at Iowa State University poses an interesting question: Could an expanded ethanol industry result in other environmental problems, maybe even stinkier hogs? A major byproduct when corn is distilled into ethanol is an animal feed called distiller's grain, which is high in phosphorous and sulfur, both of which pass through a pig's digestive system. Too much phosphorous in manure causes problems if it's not handled properly and runs off into waterways. Studies show too much phosphorous is harmful to lakes and streams, where it promotes algae growth. Sulfur is a key component of manure smell, and preliminary studies show a slight trend toward increased odor when pigs are fed distiller's grain, said

The USGS provides maps, reports, and information to help others meet their needs to manage, develop, and protect America's water, energy, mineral, and land resources. We help find natural resources needed to build tomorrow, and supply scientific understanding needed to help minimize or mitigate the effects of natural hazards and environmental damage caused by human activities. The results of our efforts touch the daily lives of almost every American.

Water Supplies
Population growth and (or) increased use of water in some Iowa locations has caused local water suppliers to seek additional sources of surface and ground water to meet these needs. Iowa generally has abundant sources of water for most uses. However, obtaining water of good quality from sources that are free of excessive natural and manmade chemicals is becoming increasingly difficult economically. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the University Hygienic Laboratory, is monitoring the quality of water in the State's aquifers to determine when and where changes in water quality are occurring. The USGS also is studying the hydrology and water quality of southeastern Iowa to determine the safe yields of aquifers and to understand the processes that affect the water quality of these sources.
