Conferences and workshops... KEY CONCEPTS IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT -
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE TO TAKE PLACE - The Ohio Alliance for the Environment is conducting a conference on Sustainable Communities...Are We Doing Enough? on November 4th and 5th, 1998 at the Concourse Hotel, Airport, Columbus. The program begins at 1:00 on the 4th , includes a dinner and keynote speaker, Ted Bernard, Professor at Ohio University and author of The Ecology of Hope, and runs the entire day on the 5th. The keynote address the second day will be given by Martin Spitzer, Executive Director of the President's Council on Sustainable Development. Throughout Ohio, business leaders, residents, elected and government officials are working to achieve a new type of prosperity based on sustainable development. This conference offers the opportunity to participate in a question and answer format with noted experts in this field and a chance to "roll up your sleeves" to work with specific topics through active group discussions. For further information, contact Dave Patton at phone 614-292-6618, FAX him at 614-292-7341 or e-mail him at patton.4@osu.edu or you may contact the District Office.
REGIONAL WORKSHOPS ON LAND USE AND FARMLAND PROTECTION POLICY- Five regional training workshops on land use and farmland policy are targeted for OSU Extension, NRCS, and SWCD staff. The workshop of the East District will be held on Thursday, December 17, 1998 at the Pritchard-Laughlin Civic Center in Cambridge from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. These workshops are being presented by American Farmland Trust in conjunction with OSU Extension and The Ohio State University, C. William Swank, Professor of Rural-Urban Policy.

Baker & Taylor's contract number for books, videos, audio tapes and discs is CT1305MVV. Ingram's is CT1305MV. The table shows the vendor and whether products are available statewide. Scroll through this list/pages to find statewide contracts for other items, i.e., computers, fax machines, furniture. http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/pocu1.htm
Polygonum cuspidatum NATIVE RANGE: Eastern Asia DESCRIPTION: Japanese knotweed, a member of the buckwheat family (Polygonaceae), is an upright, shrublike, herbaceous perennial that can grow to over 10 feet in height. As with all members of this family, the base of the stem above each joint is surrounded by a membranous sheath. Stems of Japanese knotweed are smooth, stout and swollen at joints where the leaf meets the stem. Although leaf size may vary, they are normally about 6 inches long by 3 to 4 inches wide, broadly oval to somewhat triangular and pointed at the tip. The minute greenish-white flowers occur in attractive, branched sprays in summer and are followed soon after by small winged fruits. Seeds are triangular, shiny, and very small, about 1/10 inch long. Japanese knotweed is designated a noxious weed in the State of Washington. ECOLOGICAL THREAT: Japanese knotweed spreads quickly to form dense thickets that exclude native vegetation and greatly alter natural ecosystems. It poses a significant threat to riparian areas, where it can survive severe floods and is able to rapidly colonize scoured shores and islands. Once established, populations are extremely persistent. DISTRIBUTION IN THE UNITED STATES: Current distribution of Japanese knotweed includes 36 states in the lower 48 from Maine to Wisconsin south to Louisiana, and scattered midwest and western states. It is not currently known to occur in Hawaii. Click

NEWS
Hopefully most of you controlled your weeds in October or early November while they were actively growing and easy to kill. If you sprayed your weeds in alfalfa a couple of weeks ago while we were having that warm weather, I would expect those weeds to be gone by spring. If you got your alfalfa in early and did not control the volunteer wheat and cheat this fall, consider flash grazing in late December or January. When alfalfa plants are shaded, they stop growing and stand loss is possible. Competitive effects of weeds can be decreased by flash-grazing them off when the soil is dry or frozen. Try to get all of the grazing done in less than a 2-week period for any part of the field. Prolonged grazing and regrazing new shoots can decrease plant vigor and thin stands. It is too cold now for any of the herbicides to control weeds in new stands so you will need to wait until March to evaluate your situation. If the weed problem is tansy mustard or cutleaf eveningprimrose, then good control is possible with 2,4-DB after it warms up. However, spring applications of 2,4-DB are not highly effective on other broadleaf weeds such as shepherdspurse, henbit, and chickweed. If there is a ryegrass problem, it can be controlled with POST PLUS in the spring. Control of most other cool-season grasses with POST PLUS applied in the spring will be poor.
