    Parent Education Activities and Workshops
Most effective parent involvement programs include a parent education component. Parent education consists of activities, workshops, lectures, and discussions which are intended to answer questions, improve skills, provide information and provide social interaction for parents with children in school (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1992).
Provide Programs That Meet Parents' Needs
It is important to remember that a successful parent education program responds directly to the expressed needs of the parents. Ideally, all parents involved in the program can be included in a parent education planning session. At the very least, they have responded to the Parent Involvement Survey. A cross-section of parents should be included in the planning, scheduling, and implementing of all parent education activities.
    Topics for Parent Education Activities
The topics parents are interested in vary widely, depending on the age of their children and their individual circumstances. Topics which might occur as priorities for parents of younger children include:

University Calendar So, what are your plans for after graduation? It's a question that many college students dread, but inevitably are asked-long before they have an answer. Career planning doesn't have to be a scary process if students start early and seek help. The new University of Iowa Career Center is a great place to start. The center offers an abundance of help, ranging from personal advisers and a career library to technology resources. Student peer assistants, Jeremy Sanford and Cobey Swoyer review resources they will use to help other students at the Cereer Center, 24 Phillips Hall. The Career Center combines the former Business and Liberal Arts Placement Office and Career Development Services, which formerly functioned as separate offices. Jerry Paschal, the new executive director of the Career Center, says internships and placement are closely related and shouldn't be separate services.

For most of their college career, students solve problems as they arise and take care of their lives without help. What should you do to help your student most effectively? "Listen first, then help students analyze and discuss solutions," says Belinda Marner, assistant vice president, Office of Student Services. "Stay calm. Be supportive." When problems arise, sometimes students turn first to parents. "But parents may not get the entire story. You think you know your child, but it’s hard to tell what’s happening when you’re separated. If a parent is supportive, the student will be more inclined to tell the whole story about what is happening and begin to think through ways to solve their own problems," Marner says. If your son or daughter lives in a residence hall, resident advisers are good people to turn to for help, she says.
