What it means to have a gifted child Why have special classes?
Where to find helpful resources
What does it mean to have a "gifted" child?
Most parents have a good idea whether or not they have an unusually high-ability child long before teachers and other school personnel tell them. Perhaps their son or daughter was speaking well before his or her first birthday. Maybe she could read by the age of three, without having been taught! Perhaps he began accumulating collections of things at an early age - categorizing them and storing them - all on his bedroom floor! She was curious about anything and everything, and "Why?" was her favorite word. He was like a human sponge, seeming to remember everything he had ever been told, and coming up with many insights that were unusual and original. Parents are their children's first teachers, and should be on the watch for gifted characteristics such as these in their children from an early age on.
  • Superior reasoning powers and problem-solving abilities Persistent curiosity; asks searching questions
