( Persian History and Culture ) The relief on the Northern Staircase of the Tripylon, Persepolis,
depicting Nobles at Ceremonies
From the dawn of history, Persia has been a distinct and important cultural entity. Its position as a vast natural fortress, with mountain ranges, enabled the Persians to preserve their individuality inspite of the conquests by the Arabs (7 th century), the Turks (10 th century), and the Mongols (13 th to 15 th centuries). Today, Iran remains a country rich in traditions, with a culture which has had great influence on other countries, both in Central Asia, and throughout the world. "Human beings are all members of one body.
They are created from the same essence.
When one member is in pain,
The others cannot rest.
If you do not care about the pain of others,
You do not deserve to be called a human being."

Iran's culture minister publishes edition of book on Rushdie The 12th run of Mohajerani's book examines Rushdie's book "in the historical context of the battle between the West and Islam." July 17, 2000, 02:08 PM
TEHRAN (AFP) - A new edition has been issued of Culture Minister Ataollah Mohajerani's book on Salman Rushdie's "The Satanic Verses," in which the Iranian official says the British novelist's work is part of a plot against Islam. The 12th run of Mohajerani's book, which has just hit Tehran bookstores, examines Rushdie's book "in the historical context of the battle between the West and Islam." In the introduction to "Commentary on the Plot of 'The Satanic Verses,'" Mohajerani, a close ally of reformist President Mohammad Khatami, writes of "deep and complex dimensions in the plot of 'The Satanic Verses.'" "The plot is anti-Islam and anti-Muslim," Mohajerani writes in the new edition of his book published by the daily newspaper Ettela'at , where he is a member of the editorial board.

Society and Culture in Qajar Iran
Studies in Honor of Hafez Farmayan Edited by Elton L. Daniel The Qajar period of Iranian history (1797-1925) is being reinterpreted by historians of modern Iran. Once considered as a time of static backwardness, the period is now more often recognized as an age of dynamic political and social change. Beginning with a brilliant renaissance of literature and arts early in the nineteenth century, Qajar Iran not only was able to hold its independence during the awesome age of Western imperialism, it also managed to transform its traditional tribal society into a modern Iranian nation state. Hafez Farmayan, a pioneer in the scholarly study of Qajar Iran, was among the first historians to draw attention to the significant social and cultural change taking place during the Qajar period and often under Qajar patronage. This volume of essays by his students, colleagues, and friends attempts to further expand this understanding of Qajar history. After examining the circumstances which led to the establishment of the dynasty, they explore the innovations which took place in education and the arts as well as the changing status of women and the significant trends among the leading intellectual figures of the period. Travel, both by Iranians abroad and foreigners to Iran, played a key role in reshaping Iranian perceptions of neighboring countries and more distant ones. A number of essays explore this theme by surveying the burgeoning travel literature during the Qajar era; travel by Iranians to the Middle East, Europe, the United States and Japan; and travel by Russians and the British to Iran. They show, in ways that should be of interest to scholars interested in the general phenomenon of “transculturation” in the age of imperialism as well as to Iran specialists, how travel to and from Qajar Iran contributed significantly to changing material conditions, social values, and intellectual perspectives.

Masjed Jamei calls for cultural cooperation among Muslim states
Tehran, June 29, IRNA Iran's Minister of Culture and Islamic
Guidance Ahmad Masjed Jamei said here Saturday, "Muslim countries
should get united in defending regional and global interests and so
they need to have close cooperation and proceed to exchange of views
in cultural, political and economic affairs."
Conferring with Iraq's Minister of Culture, Hamed Yousef Hamadi,
he referred to cultural and artistic cooperation as one of the ways
of opposing the pro-Zionism policies of some states. He added, "By attempting to isolate some states in the region and in the world, the US is striving to suppress them." He underlined, "Fortunately, the media of the Islamic world have displayed their positive role to promote Islamic culture and these efforts should continue to ensure a special standing for Muslim states in the process of globalization." He said that culture is a favorable ground for the onset and expansion of ties among Islamic states in all fields.

or Iranians having children is a blessing and a very important life task to be accomplished by all married couples. Zoroastrian literature advises the young that being married is preferable and having children is far more praiseworthy than not having any.
All major religions in the area have also recommended having children. Childless marriages were a source of concern for both parent specially women. They were the ones that were blamed and the occasion was used to initiate divorce or polygamy. The notion of marriage in Islam is partly defined in terms of procreation. Marriage is a contract to legitimately produce children through a legitimate sexual act between a male and a female (or a number of females). Pregnancies that are out of prescribed legitimate contracts such as permanent or temporary marriages (concubines) are not recognized. Any child born outside such contracts is regarded as illegitimate and does not have legal status or protection.
Traditionally boys have always been preferred over girls. Documents from Achaemenid archives indicate that mothers with baby boys were given twice more rations compared to mothers with newborn girls. Even the midwife or the physician delivering baby boys was paid twice more in terms of rations and wages. Modern Iranians do not hold such notions any more. However traditional families particularly in rural areas still regard having boys as more creditable.
The birth rituals traditionally started with the pregnancy itself. The rituals involved efforts to make sure the baby was male if no boys had been produced earlier. First-born sons were particularly desired. Wishes were made and alms would be paid to the poor. Visiting shrines and slaughtering lamb and sheep were promised if a boy was born. If the mother looked healthy, active and happy it was assumed she was expecting a boy. If her face and body were covered with rashes or there was discoloring or redness the mother was carrying a girl. By the time the mother was six months pregnant, the shape of her belly was used to decide the gender of the future baby. Perfect round bellies indicated a boy and other kinds a girl. Quite often the gender of the newborn would decide the status and position of the mother in the household, especially if the husband had more than one wife.
