Culture, Performance and Communication in Iran (Tokyo:ICLAA, 1982) William O. Beeman INTRODUCTION (Note: This is only the introduction to the full book. For more information, contact the author William_Beeman@Brown.edu The present collection of essays is the result of research consisting of nearly a decade of explorations into that area of human activity which I have come to call "expressive culture." Expressive culture pertains to the enactment or display.of symbolic cultural materials with the implicit expectation that other individuals will be directly affected by such presentations. At the core of expressive culture lie the performance skills of every member of society. Whenever individuals open their mouths to speak, they are engaging in a minor form of performance, as Goffman, Garfinkel and other researchers in the fields of symbolic interaction and ethnomethodology have demonstrated in recent years. But explications of the underlying logic of the performance modes in communication, especially for societies outside of the United States, have rarely been at- tempted by social scientists. The principles of performance can be thought of as, being based on a kind of symbolic modal system, which skilled performers, like'. skilled improvisatory musicians, can explore infinitely, but which still binds them to a core of structure which they share with those with whom they are communicating. The essays in this volume attempt to tap into that modal system for Iranian society, which I have had the great privilege of studying since I was a fledgling anthropologist. I have never lost my sense of wonder at the great intricacy and beauty of Iranian culture. Even at the time of this writing, when much of the world has come to know that nation only through the darker and more violent aspects of its culture, I can only be astounded at the infinite variety of Iran, and its passions.

University students in Iran have been engaged in widespread protests over the recent death sentence of a popular liberal history teacher. The lecturer, Hashem Aghajari, delivered a speech in August calling for some reforms of Shiite Islam and telling people not to 'blindly follow' religious leaders.
He was arrested, found guilty of insulting the Prophet Mohammed, and was creatively sentenced to (in order) 74 lashes, 8 years in prison and finally, death by hanging.
The ruling clerics may have backed themselves into a serious corner, though. ADVERTISEMENT

Ananova: Iran unveils Islamic twin dolls to fight culture war Iran is introducing its answer to Barbie and Ken, boy and girl twin dolls who promote traditional values. Dara and Sara are being marketed by the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults. They are widely seen as an effort to counter the American dolls and accessories that have flooded the Iranian market. "The dolls are most welcome. Dara and Sara are strategic products to preserve our national identity. And of course, it is an answer to Barbie and Ken, which have dominated Iran's toy market," toy seller Mehdi Hedayat said. Another toy seller, Masoumeh Rahimi, said Barbie was "foreign to Iran's culture" because some of the popular Western dolls wear revealing clothing. She said young girls who play with Barbie, a doll she sees as wanton, could grow into women who reject Iranian values. "I think every Barbie doll is more harmful than an American missile," Ms Rahimi said. Dara and Sara were born as characters in elementary school books. Their story continues in tales in verse recorded on cassettes sold in stores along with the dolls.

Painting Culture in Iran; An Interview with Iran Daroodi
    Jam-e Jam (Persian Morning Daily)
    July 22, 2002, No. 934
    By: Seyed Hadi Sadrai
    Page: 5
    Word Count: 2237

Summary: The Iranian prominent painter, Iran Daroodi, believes that though painting in Iran has progressed remarkably and given that there is no difference between men's and women's potential and freedom in creating artworks, the main problem lies in the absence of painting culture as well as the lack of interest and access to culture. Also, she says, lack of proper assessment and museums in the country contributes to deterring Iran's painting from competing with a country such as France despite its 2,500-year background.
Text: Iran Daroodi was born in Mashad in Sept 1936. She started painting as a child and her great enthusiasm resulted in great achievements worldwide. Last year an exhibition of her paintings was held at the Artists Complex in Tehran. She presented one of her outstanding artworks to the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts (TMCA) as a souvenir. An interview with her follows.
Q: First of all, please talk about the years you spent in France and how you came up with the idea of choosing art as a career.

    By Jim Muir
BBC Tehran correspondent Recent figures show that in little more than a decade, Iran has scored a stunning success in reducing its population growth rate, thanks to a vigorous state-supported family planning campaign. It means that in the year 2006, the country's population is expected to be 37 million less than it would have been at the birth rates prevailing in the late 1980s, when the campaign began. Couples can't get a marriage licence without attending contraception classes
Many taboos have been broken along the way. The Keyhan Bod plant is about two hours drive to the west of Tehran, and is the only state-supported condom factory in the Middle East. It produces about 45 million condoms a year, in 30 different shapes, colours and flavours.

    Iran and the Surrounding World
Interactions in Culture and Cultural Politics Edited by Nikki R. Keddie and Rudi Matthee

These essays examine Iran's place in the world - its relations and cultural interactions with its immediate neighbors and with empires and superpowers from the beginning of the Safavid period in 1501 to the present day. The book provides important historical background on recent political and social developments in Iran and on its contemporary foreign relations. The topics explored include Iranian influence abroad on political organization, religion, literature, art, and diplomacy, as well as Iran's absorption of foreign influences in these areas. A special focus is the prevailing political culture of Iran throughout its early modern and contemporary periods.
The authors combine approaches from history, political science, anthropology, international relations, and culturalstudies. Some essays address Iran's interactions with various Arab and Turkic ethnicities in the region stretching from India to Egypt. Others examine its relations with the West during the Qajar and Pahlavi eras, women's issues, culture inside Iran during the Islamic Republic, and the Shi`ite theocracy of Iran as compared with other Muslim states.
Nikki R. Keddie is professor emerita of history at UCLA and the author of many books, including Women in Middle Eastern History and Iran and the Muslim World. Rudi Matthee is associate professor of history at the University of Delaware. Other contributors are Bahman Baktiari, Thomas J. Barfield, Asef Bayat, Wilfried Buchta, Juan R. I. Cole, Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak, Firoozeh Kashani-Sabet, Golnar Mehran, Hamid Naficy, Vali Nasr, Monica M. Ringer, Jasamin Rostam-Kolayi, Gary Sick, Abolala Soudavar, and Nayereh Tohidi.
