By Ian Williams GVNews.Net Crisis Capsule NEW YORK, Jan 06, 2003 Over the weekend British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw told a conclave of British diplomats that he thought the odds were 60/40 against war with Iraq - even while Britain prepared to send 20,000 troops to fight the war that he claimed was unlikely. He did not explain the basis of his calculation; however we can presume that it will include the odds of Saddam Hussein, George Bush, or both, having a lucid moment. Frankly, it is not a good bet. The war may be later than the White House wants, and the Pentagon may have to boost the air conditioning in its tanks and HUMVs, and distribute more rehydration kits to the troops, but even before he exhorted the embarking warriors over the weekend, George W. Bush has made it plain that he wants war. And he is likely to get it unless Saddam Hussein decides to spend his declining years fishing and dandling his grandchildren on his knee.

Iraq's neighbours: How do they feel about America's attack on Iraq?
CBC News Online
Last updated April 4, 2003
Saudi Arabia
POPULATION: 22,757,092 Position: Saudi Arabia initially said it would not join a second war in Iraq, but agreed to allow the U.S.-led coalition to use its airspace and the Prince Sultan Air Base. Two weeks after the U.S.-led attack was launched, government appointed clerics told the country that Saddam and his infidel regime weren't worth fighting for. However, there have been reports that some Saudis have crossed the border and joined the Iraqi regime's fight against U.S. coalition forces.
Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Saud told the Associated Press on Aug.7, 2002, that the Iraqi people alone must choose their leader, as opposed to armed forces effecting a leadership change. He noted that Iraq's offer to invite UN weapons inspectors - who had not been in the country since December 1998 - signaled that an attack was not necessary. Military presence in Saudi Arabia, as of Mar. 1, 2003:

Young Americans Get D In Geography
WASHINGTON, Nov. 20, 2002
(AP)
"While Sept. 11th may have changed many things, it has not changed the insularity of our young people."
National Geographic Society
president John Fahey
(CBS) Young Americans may soon have to fight a war in Iraq, but most of them can't even find that country on a map, the National Geographic Society said Wednesday.
The survey points to increasing geographic illiteracy, reports CBS News Correspondent Peter Maer . On a world map young Americans could find only seven of sixteen countries on a quiz. Many could not pinpoint specific states. Only about one in seven — 13 percent — of Americans between the ages of 18 and 24, the prime age for military warriors, could find Iraq. The score was the same for Iran, an Iraqi neighbor. Although the majority, 58 percent, of the young Americans surveyed knew that the Taliban and al Qaeda were based in Afghanistan, only 17 percent could find that country on a world map. A U.S.-led force attacked the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan in October 2001, and President Bush has said he is prepared to use force to rid Iraq of any chemical, nuclear or biological weapons programs. "We were quite stunned to find out that these people did not know where Iraq was," Terry Garcia of National Geographic magazine told

GEOGRAPHY
Iraq is bordered by Kuwait, Iran, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. The country slopes from mountains over 3,000 meters (10,000 ft.) above sea level along the border with Iran and Turkey to the remnants of sea-level, reedy marshes in the southeast. Much of the land is desert or wasteland. The mountains in the northeast are an extension of the alpine system that runs eastward from the Balkans into southern Turkey, northern Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan, terminating in the Himalayas. Average temperatures range from higher than 48 degrees C (120 degrees F) in July and August to below freezing in January. Most of the rainfall occurs from December through April and averages between 10 and 18 centimeters (4-7 in.) annually. The mountainous region of northern Iraq receives appreciably more precipitation than the central or southern desert region. Area: 437,072 sq. km.; about the size of California.
Cities : CapitalBaghdad (pop. 3.8 million 1986 est.). Other citiesBasrah, Mosul, Karkuk, As Sulaymaniyah, Irbil.

Geography
Kuwait is a small state located in the northwestern corner of the Arabian, or Persian, Gulf (referred to hereafter simply as "the Gulf"). Approximately the size of New Jersey, Kuwait covers an area of 17,818 sq kilometers (6,880 sq. miles). At its widest points, Kuwait is 200 kilometers (124 miles) from north to south and 170 kilometers (106 miles) from east to west. The country's most prominent geographical feature is Kuwait Bay, a large natural inlet that extends 40 km into the mainland.
Shaped roughly like a triangle, Kuwait shares borders with Iraq in the north and northwest and Saudi Arabia in the south and southwest; the Gulf bounds Kuwait on the east.
There are nine islands in the country's territorial waters: Warbah, Bubiyan, Maskan, Failaka, Awhah, Umm Al-Naml, Kubbar, Qaruh, and Umm Al-Maradim. The densely inhabited island of Failaka, lying 20 kilometers northeast of Kuwait City at the mouth of Kuwait Bay, is thought by some to be the northernmost point of the Bronze Age civilization of Dilmun. There is also evidence that Failaka (referred to at the time as Ikoras) was settled by Alexandrian troops sometime after 323 BC.

What's going on in the world? Almost any news today, whether domestic or foreign, has relevance to geographers. We seem to be interested in everything everywhere. Select almost any news story and there is geographic relevance. This week's recommended web site (see the Archives page for past posts): Iraq is certainly in the news and some folks caution that we, the citizens, do not know enough about the country to make infomed decisions. There are plenty of web sites with good information about the country, but here are a few that seem to be useful. Iraq, the cradle of civilization, is situated in the north-east of the great Arab homeland of which it is an important part. It lies to the north-east of the Arabian Peninsula, itself part of South-West Asia of which Iraq is an extension, because of their similar geophysical structures. Iraq is in the southern part of the North Temperate Zone between latitudes 29.5 - 37.25 and longitudes 38.45 - 45.48.
It has an area of 438,446 Sq, which includes the 18 governorates. In the central part, astride the Tigris, lies the great capital of Harun Al-Rashid, Baghdad.
Iraq is bounded on the North by Turkey, on the West by Syria and Jordan, on the south by Saudi Arabia, and the Arab Gulf, and on the East by Iran.
Because of its geographical position, it has been a bridge between three continents, Asia, Africa, aand Europe, and between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. Its therefore, the shortest land route between Europe and South-East Asia.
The country can be divided roughly into three regions: the mountainous snow-clad north and north-east, about 20% of the whole country, a central largely limestone plateau represnting 59,5% of the whole, and the southern flat lowland alluvial plain, with many lakes and marshes.

Transnational Issues Iraq Introduction Top of Page Background: Formerly part of the Ottoman Empire, Iraq became an independent kingdom in 1932. A "republic" was proclaimed in 1958, but in actuality a series of military strongmen have ruled the country since then, the latest being SADDAM Husayn. Territorial disputes with Iran led to an inconclusive and costly eight-year war (1980-1988). In August 1990 Iraq seized Kuwait, but was expelled by US-led, UN coalition forces during January-February 1991. The victors did not occupy Iraq, however, thus allowing the regime to stay in control. Following Kuwait's liberation, the UN Security Council (UNSC) required Iraq to scrap all weapons of mass destruction and long-range missiles and to allow UN verification inspections. UN trade sanctions remain in effect due to incomplete Iraqi compliance with relevant UNSC resolutions.

Afghanistan
Under nearly constant warfare for the past 22 years, the landlocked Central Asian nation successfully fought off a nine-year invasion from the Soviet Union in 1989. Shortly thereafter, the rebel groups, or mujahadin, began fighting each other, culminating in a civil war that is still underway. The Taliban, a group of Islamic fundamentalists, controls 90% of Afghanistan, including the capital of Kabul. The allow Osama bin Laden, a former mujahadin soldier, to set up camp in Afghanistan as their "guest." Pakistan
Afghanistan's neighbor to the east, Pakistan was the United States' primary ally in Central Asia during the Cold War. Pakistan has been engaging in sporadic warfare with India for more than 40 years over the province of Kashmir, which each nation claims. Pakistan last made news in 1998, when it detonated a series of nuclear devices to match India's atomic capabilities. The subsequent international sanctions resulting from the tests have left Pakistan economically weakened. Now the leadership must balance a desire to assist the United States with the resulting backlash from Pakistani Islamic militants, who support the Taliban.
