The C lare L oc a l S tudies P roject team (using FÁS training schemes to help people produce useful things while developing their skills) goes from strength to strength. Here they take nine articles published between 1896 and 1915 in The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland (incidentally marking the sesquicentenary of the RSAI's foundation), and reset them complete with Westropp's marvellous drawings and plans (and even some photos) to make a most satisfactory detailed Gazeteer of ancient remains in and around the Burren, including cairns, huts, cists and souterrains. The typesetting is scrupulous and intelligent, the reproduction good, the design from jacket and endpapers to every last detail very satisfactory - and of course the achievement in opening the treasures in cobwebbed journals to an eager public tremendous. And if sites and constructs have suffered damage in the century since Westropp recorded them, that record is all the more valuable. Back to Archaeology of the Burren

History of Athlone
A thlone has a rich history. There is documentary reference to Athlone going back to 333: the earliest recorded battle between east and west. The Annals of Ulster, 1001, note the building of a causeway jointly by the kings of Meath and Connacht, but the crossing was more frequently the focus of intense conflict rather than cooperation.
In 1120 the Connaught king built the first of six successive wicker or wooden bridges, and in 1129 a castle to defend it. Bridge and castle were destroyed on behalf of the Meath kingdom and rebuilt by the Connaught kings successively over the next forty years.
In 1168 the Annals of the Four Masters record a residence in Athlone for the King of Connaught. The Cluniac priory may have been founded on the east bank in 1150.
In 1172 the Kingdom of Mide was granted to the Norman Hugh de Lacy, and part of Connacht adjoining Athlone to Geoffrey de Constentin in 1200. In 1210 in recognition of it's strategic importance Athlone was designated as the joint seat, with Dublin, of English administration in Ireland and the construction of a new Castle and bridge was begun.

    Achill Island
in Mayo in the West of Ireland
Achill Island (24 km x 19 km) is the largest island in the Country and is accessible from the mainland by bridge. Its magnificent sandy beaches, sea cliffs and warm hospitality bring visitors back again and again for holidays. Visit the beautiful villages of Dooagh and Dooega, the high cliffs at Slievemore and Minaun, the magnificent beaches at Keel and Keem, under the Achill Head. The famous Atlantic Drive takes you on a journey of scenic splendour, a must for all visitors to Achill. Achill boasts no less than two adventure centres which offer the best in windsurfing, sailing, abseiling, diving and many other activities. The Achill Seafood Festival has established itself as one of Mayo's best festival weekends. The Festival, which is held in July, offers the best in delicious gourmet seafood, with plenty of ceol, music agus craic in the many traditional pubs in the evenings. Scoil Acla is one of Ireland's oldest summer schools offering workshops in traditional music, creative writing, set dancing and Ceili Workshops. The summer school hosts art exhibitions, painting courses and of course, Gaeilge Acla - the Irish of Achill.

    - Fintan, the Great Rememberer Céad Mile Fáilte to Ancient Ireland ~ Welcome! I am deeply grateful for my Irish emigrant ancestors who struggled to survive in dignity. Were it not for their perseverence, stamina and pure will to live, I wouldn't be here today. There isn't one day that goes by that I don't think about what they endured so that their descendants could enjoy a better life. All of my websites are created in their honor. Also, as an Irish-American author and educator, I'm interested in keeping our rich Celtic heritage alive in our society. I have tried to create a site that will facilitate research into our fascinating Celtic culture and history. This page is under permanent re-construction since I'm always searching for the *best* resources the Net has to offer on Ancient Ireland. I have a great interest in Ancient Éire and invite you to enjoy all that is presented here....Lots more will follow.
