    Ireland's Geography
    Sea, Cliffs, Bogs and More

The island of Ireland is the westernmost and second largest of the British Isles, in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is separated from Great Britain by Saint George's Channel on the southeast, the Irish Sea on the east, and the North Channel on the northeast. Politically, the island is divided into Northern Ireland, a constituent part of Great Britain, and the Republic of Ireland, formerly Eire. See map of Ireland.
Ireland is a unique blend of hills, bogs, lakes, rivers and remote islands with much of the country in the fertile central and eastern plateau almost completely surrounded by low mountains and coastal plains. Eight mountain ranges divide the island and support extensive forest lands. The west and north coasts feature spectacular sea cliffs. Besides the ever-waving waters surrounding the island, the River Liffey, running through Dublin on the east coast, is one of the most significant rivers in the country. Rising 12 miles south of the city, it flows in a huge crescent for over 80 miles before entering the sea at Dublin Bay. The Shannon the longest river in Ireland runs through in the south, running through pastureland and fertile farmland in the south.
    The Legendary Wicklow Mountains
The formation of the island of Ireland was influenced by volcanic eruptions, earthmoving forces and alternating periods of intense heat and glaciations. County Wicklow is most famous for its impressive, undulating landscapes. The county, described as the "Garden of Ireland," lies astride Dublin with the Wicklow Mountains forming the city border. The Irish countryside at first appears a continuous, brilliant green mat of grasses, but a close look reveals lichen, ferns, rushes, sedges, buttercups, primroses the legendary heather, and of course, shamrocks.

    INTRODUCTION
Background: A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for the 26 southern counties; the six northern counties (Ulster) remained part of Great Britain. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, approved in 1998, has not yet been implemented.

Another striking feature of Ireland's geography is the extent of peat bog - which covers nearly a fifth of the entire country. These bogs often present very dramatic landscapes, with strangely shaped trees standing amongst multi-toned patterns of brown and purple. The turf, a legacy of the rapid warming of the country following the last Ice Age, is still widely worked. The lack of forest cover in Ireland is also immediately noticeable. Although Ireland's sparse woodlands cover just 6% of the land compared to Germany, for example, where forest cover is nearly 25%, primeval forests can still be found, consisting of ancient oak and the great Scots Pine. Most forests are more recent, mainly of Sitka spruce.
    • Ireland's greatest length is 485 km (302 miles) and it is 304 km (189 miles) at its widest point.
