Ireland has been divided administratively since 1922 when the Irish Free State was formed 12th century First involvement by England in Irish affairs when the Earl of Pembroke, known as Strongbow, intervenes in a local dispute in Leinster in 1170 . King Henry II lands the following year. English expansion continues and in 1177, Ulster is conquered by soldiers led by John de Courcy. 14th/15th centuries English expansion halted and then reversed. By the end of the period, English possessions are limited to a small area around Dublin. the 'Pale'. Everything outside is regarded as savage, giving rise to the expression 'beyond the pale'. 16th century First Henry VIII and then Elizabeth I take an increasing interest in Ireland. Colonisation increases again, sparking off several rebellions late in the century. The greatest of the revolts, led by Ulsterman Hugh O'Neill, the Earl of Tyrone, reaches its high point with victory over the English at the Yellow Ford in 1598, but he is defeated three years later at Kinsale and surrenders. 17th century Start of the 'Plantation of Ulster' - the systematic colonisation of Donegal, Tyrone, Derry, Armagh, Cavan and Fermanagh by settlers from England and Scotland.

http://www.clevehill.wnyric.org/aphist/Irelandhistory.html
Ireland the Tragedy-(1180-1855) During this period the people of Ireland were confronted with several political and economic problems. Many Irish people emigrated to America to escape these hardships. For the Irish many of their problems began in the 1180's when the King of England decided that they needed more land. This need was created due to the small geographic land area of England and the practice of "primogeniture". This term meant that all family land inheritances went to the eldest son. As a result many of the younger sons became priests, military officers or tried to buy acreage in England. In an attempt to solve this problem, the Pope gave Ireland to England so there was more land for the British to settle(at this point in history England was still a catholic nation). It wouldn't be until later that the British actually began to live there. In the1600's, the English attempted to establish their presence by beginning a policy of forced assimilation. In enforcing this policy they tried to eliminate the use of Gaelic (the Irish language) and eradicate the Catholic religion. Before the English introduced their thoughts and beliefs on male supremacy to Ireland, women and men had enjoyed social and political equality. Irish men and women bravely fought the British to protect their land. However, it wasn't enough to stop them. At this point Irish tenant farmers found themselves faced with eviction for non payment of rent.

History
The Celts, Iron Age warriors from eastern Europe, reached Ireland around 300 BC. They controlled the country for 1000 years and left a legacy of language and culture that survives today, especially in Galway, Cork, Kerry and Waterford. The Romans never reached Ireland, and when the rest of Europe sank into the decline of the Dark Ages after the fall of the empire, the country became an outpost of European civilisation, particularly after the arrival of Christianity, between the 3rd and 5th centuries. During the 8th century Viking raiders began to plunder Ireland's monasteries. The Vikings settled in Ireland in the 9th century, and formed alliances with native families and chieftains. They founded Dublin, which in the 10th century was a small Viking kingdom. The English arrived with the Normans in 1169, taking Wexford and Dublin with ease. The English king, Henry II, was recognised by the pope as Lord of Ireland and he took Waterford in 1171, declaring it a royal city. Anglo-Norman lords also set up power bases in Ireland, outside the control of England. English power was consolidated under Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The last thorn in the English side was Ulster, final outpost of the Irish chiefs, in particular Hugh O'Neill, earl of Tyrone. In 1607 O'Neill's ignominious departure, along with 90 other chiefs, left Ulster leaderless and primed for the English policy of colonisation known as 'plantation' - an organised and ambitious expropriation of land and introduction of settlers which sowed the seeds for the division of Ulster still in existence today.

These local taxes, called the County Cess, were based on townland units. Successive committees of the House of Commons debated this problem and found that, although the names and outlines of these divisions were assumed to be well known, the acreages and rateable valuations were doubtful. Finally, on the recommendations of the Spring Rice Committee, a survey of all Ireland at a scale of 6 inches to one mile was authorized by the British Parliament in 1824. On the 22 June 1824, the day after the report was signed, Lt Col Thomas Colby was chosen to undertake this task. Prior to this the Ordnance Survey's brief had been topographic mapping at smaller scales and this departure marked the introduction of the large scale mapping that was to become a major task. Colby immediately began the trigonometrical survey of Ireland.

History
Dublin was a Danish town until 1014, when Brian Boru defeated the Danes at nearby Clontarf. The Danes established themselves again until Richard Strongbow, 2d earl of Pembroke Pale . In 1209 occurred the Black Monday massacre of English residents. Edward Bruce unsuccessfully assaulted the town in the early 14th cent. In the English civil war the city surrendered (1647) to the parliamentarians, and Oliver Cromwell landed there in 1649. James II held (1689) his last Parliament in Dublin. After winning the battle of the Boyne , William III entered the city in 1690. From 1782 to 1800, when the Irish Parliament (the so-called Grattan's Parliament) enjoyed temporary independence of England, Dublin experienced a prosperous and stimulating era; many of the city's buildings date from this period. After the Act of Union of 1800, which sent Irish representatives to the British Parliament, many wealthy aristocrats moved from their Dublin mansions to London, and the years of prosperity ended.

About Co-operation Ireland
History
Co-operation Ireland was founded in 1979 (as Co-operation North) in the midst of the ' troubles ' by Dr Brendan O'Regan a businessman and entrepreneur. At the time of Co-operation Ireland's establishment, the violence in Northern Ireland had been continuing for almost a decade. In Northern Ireland, relations between the catholic and protestant communities were at an all time low. In the Republic of Ireland, very few travelled to Northern Ireland or understood the complexity of the situation. Many courageous people protested and urged an end to the violence, but too many had become resigned to the continuing conflict as a way of life. It's in this context that Co-operation Ireland was founded. Its objective was to promote peace in a new and practical way. The charity would work to develop understanding and contact between the two parts of Ireland. Since then it has grown to be the largest peace charity in Ireland. Every year, thousands of young people, community workers, and business people take part in our programmes and in doing so learn more about each other.
